Friends,

I want you to share the experience of visiting the amusement parks like s l
world or water kingdom.

I visited the water kingdom, there I was not allowed to ride on the slide
because of my blindness. But this was not the case with all the rides, I
think it was not the matter of security but the attitude of the security
personnel. AS I was permitted to ride on many difficult slides but at the
same time I was denied in comparatively simple rides.

In their warnings they mentioned about heart patient and blud pressure
patients. But their was no mention of blind or PHS.

Re: [AI] cutting hair on and around ears

2013-10-11 Thread Pranav Lal
Hi Mahindra,

1. I believe you get dedicated ear hair trimmers.
2. Electric shavers also work nicely.

I keep the cuts uniform by feel. As far as I know, hair sticking out of your
ears is a bad idea in the looks department but I suspect there are too many
variables for there to be a standard answer to this question.

any improvement. SO I left them, and have been doing some alternative

Hello,

I am having low vision. I have heard from somewhere that one tonic-garodarma
of DXN company can be useful for such diseases. I am suffering from RP.

Is there anyone in the group who has taken this tonic? I have seen one
advertisement cd which has impressed me. Can anyone guide about this from
the group?

Friends,
Please try to understand the whole scenario rather than blaming an
individual. We must fight against the social prejudice and buyas. In
my knowledge, no political party has taken adequate concrete steps to
eliminate our problems. If any, simply they are showing simpathy or
the concept of doing good for the destitutes. We must unite to go for
lobbying like other minority or some other sections of the society.
Thanks and regards

Re: [AI] Adventure sports for the blind: Our experiences

2013-10-11 Thread Prashant Verma
Dear Pranav,
The website was experiencing problems. Now it is working. You may visit the
page now.

Adventure sports for the blind: Our experiences
October 11th, 2013

Whenever someone thinks about adventure sorts for the blind the questions
that instantly come up are:

list of 4 items
» Do blind persons enjoy the experience as much as the sighted?
» When blind persons cannot see the height they are flying at, the mountain
they have climbed or the river they are rafting then what is the point?
» What motivates blind persons to indulge in adventure activities?
» Which adventure activities are accessible? Which activities are safe?
list end
Paragliding in Turkey

Being a visually impaired couple we have also been pondering over these
questions and in the last several years and have found few answers.

Let me give you some background first. I am a person with low vision and my
wife is totally blind. I am someone who can easily pass off as non-disabled
since I have enough vision for mobility under good light. However, I cannot
read the standard print and depend upon screen readers and magnifiers for
all
reading and writing needs. So, from the point of indulging into any sports
activity, my vision is only adequate to let me know of my surroundings, I
cannot
depend upon my eyesight to do any precise action or maneuvering. My wife
Veena is totally blind and depends upon the non-visual senses for
accomplishing
tasks. Therefore, the information in this article is good for both totally
blind and partially blind persons.

Both of us are fond of travelling, exploring new places and trying out new
food. This hobby of ours has taken us to many tourists spots in India and
around
the world. That is how we got opportunities to try out different adventure
sports. We have so far done Bungee jumping, Paragliding, Parasailing,
rafting,
Horse riding, trekking and mountaineering.

My best memories are of the
Bungee Jumping at Rishikesh
 and
Para gliding at Öludeniz, Turkey.
 The
white water rafting
was also exhilarating and one of its kind.

Jumping from 83 meters with a string attached to my feet was indeed a scary
experience. I could see that I am high above the ground and jumping from
there
felt like committing suicide. The instructor kept urging me to move further
to the edge of the platform until half of my feet was in the air and I was
precariously balanced on the platform on my heels. He then asked me to leap
forward. The platform was shaking in the gusty winds and for a moment I felt
that life was about to end. I knew that people could not go back after
coming this far and if I did not jump, I will be pushed from behind. I have
always
considered myself to be mentally strong and could not allow people to make
fun of me later saying that I could not dare to jump. So, I somehow allowed
myself to drop down consoling myself that whatever has to happen will
happen. Going down towards earth so fast face down was indeed very
frightening but
when the elastic cord pulled me up I started to enjoy the experience.

Bungee jumping in Rishikesh

We had the pleasure of visiting Turkey, which has some of the best beaches
in the world. We decided to try out the world famous paragliding over the
blue
lagoon. Surprisingly, the pilots had no hesitation in taking us when I told
them that Veena is blind and I am low vision. I want to further add that we
have been lucky so far and we never faced any resistance from the adventure
sports crew anywhere in the world. We had done paragliding earlier in India
and Thailand therefore we were confident of pulling it off successfully. We
jumped off a hill from a height of 5600 feet and flew for a good 30 minutes.
Circling over the beautiful blue lagoon and the neighboring mountains was
indeed amazing. The pilot was carrying a camera and shot many pictures and
videos
some of which we purchased from their office later. We landed on the beach.
Veena had a very smooth landing while I slightly bruised my knee.
Fortunately
apart from this we have never faced any injury or accident anywhere so far.

Rafting in the river Ganga

We think that blind persons really enjoy the adventure activities at least
we do. In our conversations with friends and family who have also done
similar
activities we found that we went through the same emotions, fear,
excitement, thrill and adrenaline rush!

As far as safety is concerned, I am not the right person to comment on it.
However, I felt that all the activities we have done were as safe for us as
it was for any other person. I did not see any additional risk due to our
disability. If the trainers are considerate and co-operative blind persons
can
safely enjoy such activities.

In response to the question why blind persons should do adventure activities
I like the explanation on the
American Blind Skiing Foundation website.

Re: [AI] how to read the guardian news paper

2013-10-11 Thread avinash shahi
Studying europe and wish to read the Guardian? how strange?,smiles.
Its very simple.
As you have shared the link
www.guardian.co.uk
let it opened, take link list view and suppose yu have to read the
opinion items. so find Comment by pressing C. Hit Enter there.
Now again wait for few seconds and keep listening sounds like batsman
tabs his bat on the ground.
Then press N to reach the published comments items. N has to be
pressed untill you hear search option.
Then by pressing down arro you can read the article of your choice.
Same AClass formula is followed in other sections like Sports and
International also.
Hope this helps.

[AI] INCLUSIVE SPACE : Telegraph Editorial

2013-10-11 Thread avinash shahi
Reservations have long become a dubious instrument of vote-garnering.
http://www.telegraphindia.com/1131011/jsp/opinion/story_17445801.jsp
Recent Indian history displays some startlingly negative effects of
‘positive discrimination’. But the Supreme Court has turned
reservations into a meaningful instrument again, by ordering the
Centre and the states to reserve up to 3 per cent of seats in all jobs
in their departments, companies and institutions for the disabled. It
is India’s disgrace that the Supreme Court should have to reiterate a
direction that is already implicit in the Persons with Disabilities
(Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation)
Act, which is 18 years old. Among the various shocking forms of
insensitivity that are normal for Indian society, a major one is the
indifference towards the disabled or differently abled. It is as
though they do not exist. The public space excludes them — roads,
forms of transport, buildings, halls and auditoriums, public bathrooms
rarely provide access or user-targeted arrangements for the
differently abled. Yet at least 2.1 per cent of the population
suffered from some disability or other in 2001 — this is a very shy
estimate — long after the law had been passed. Such is the determined
glossing over of this huge population by the rest of country that the
need to design spaces with special conveniences built in for different
kinds of disability has never been a priority. The arrangements for
someone who cannot see, or sees little, must be different from those
for one who cannot hear, or, again, for one who has difficulty in
moving. A truly inclusive society is one in which all spaces are
comfortable and safe for everyone, whether they be mentally challenged
or physically disabled.

The Supreme Court’s order regarding jobs actually forces open all the
other frontiers. Without a suitably supportive infrastructure, whether
inside the office or outside on the way to and from it, no government
would be able to implement the order. Sensitivity cannot be imposed,
but the law can. A serious intention to carry through the court’s
order would impel governments to focus on the necessary practical
issues, so that disabled people can move and work without pain,
exertion, anxiety or disadvantage. The practical work would induce the
mindset: greater visibility and participation in productive work would
become a constant reminder to those who find it easiest to forget.

In Xavier’s we do play cricket, football, and chess. There are other
games also that my college mates play occasionally. Couple of us are
going to also run half marathon this year too.

Re: [AI] Suprim Court: Provide 3% Reservation for disable candidates in job within 3 month.

2013-10-11 Thread Neelima Surve
Good!

Congratulations for ourselves only. And Thanks from the bottom of the
heart to all those NGOs Which are made by the blind, for the blind
and of the blind. Means, NFBM and AICB especially. Because, this can
be happend just because of their eforts only.

I Must say thanks to NFBM, because, yesterday, 2 years were completed
to my passed order from the Mumbai Hi Court to Resume me again on my
designation in Chetana's HS College. And, on 15 Oct. 2011, finally,
College had handovered the appointment order to me. I am very happy
that on 15th of Oct. I will be finishing my 2 years probessionary
period. This could be happend just because of the speachless eforts
of NFBM. For which I was fighting since 2006 till 2011.

First I went to the disability comissionar's office. After 2 3 years,
Disability Comisionar gave the decision in favour of Chetana's
College. And, then I knocked the dore of Hi Court with the help of
NFBM in 2010, and, finally, justice Mohit Shaha has been paased the
order in favour of me. He has kept the first priority to my case. Saw
the demownstation which is shown by Zeviers College. And, now, each
and every handicap is somewhere little bit relaxed, because, all have
some hopes that they will get their rights again.

Really, we would appriciate the eforts of Justice Mohit Shaha also.

Still I must say, at the end, Suprim Court, or, Hi court will pass
order again & again, but, there is a need of an implementation. Which
is not going in a proper manner not only from the Government, but
also, from the society. And my question is: Why each and every
handicap person should nock the dore of Suprim Court or Hi Court for
their rights? When society will understand, that, handicap person is
also a human being, so, they also have some right.

Anyways, on this ground, 2 days before Suprim Court has passed an
order to provide 3% reservation for disable person in job. and
implement this within 3 months.

We must say thanks to the speechless eforts of an NGOs like NFBM, NFB, & AICB.

Please come forward, and give our cooperative hands in their hands. &
then, we should must say, LET us HOPE FOR THE BEST.

or experience as desired by any recruitment process as essential
qualification.but this intention of govt. is not implemented because
of the unwilling approach of the department to amulgamate the pwd's
however we are trying to get strengthen this provision and fighting to
eradicate such provisions which are creating leakage in implementing
this wonderful rule.
Do let me knoe any such provision or close to similar rule in of the
