Re: [AI] wanted typing tutor
Hi, No thing to mind. It is an obvious question. Few days ago, I have posted an email clarifying why non-Unicode fonts can not be read by a TTS. For your knowledge, I am again pasting the full texts of the mail below. Hi lists, Many friends are regularly complaining me that my Wachak of any language could not read the Ansi format texts. Some one even has doubted me. Yes it does not read. Fundamentally it reads but produces the meaningless speech! What is the reason? Dear friends, there are two type of format of text. One is ANSI and another is Unicode. The texts in which your screen reader is producing a meaningless speech is the ANSI encoded text which are not possible to be read by any of the TTS. Why? Because they are not your language fonts. They are English Fonts. These fonts are designed in such a way that they look like your language letters at the screen but in computer memory they are recorded as an English Fonts. In other words, for computer, they are English fonts but in the eye of a sited person, they appear as your language texts. Imagine a gentleman is walking at a street wearing ladies dress, he looks like a women but in reality he is a male. Same case prevails here. The Ansi format letters look as your language texts but they are english Font texts. But the unicode texts are really your language font texts which are read with meaningful way by my wachak or any text reader. The ANSI font texts are a great headache to VI persons in computer accessibility. This problem prevails in all languages of this sub continent including my Nepali. This obstacle will continued till the sited persons will remain 'blind by mind...". what is the solution? There are two ways. 1. Completely abandon the ANSI format and Write all text in unicode format. But the 'blind by mind' sited world will not do it easily because intheir eyes the ANSI texts appear as their language texts. This is a problem only to the 'blind by eyes' persons. 2. Develope a ANSI to Unicode Font converter tool, convert the text to unicode before reading and use the existing text reader like Wachak. I had developed a special tool named Varnakriti Paribartak, a ANSI to unicode font converter for Nepali. As a result, my language fellow are free from this barriers. However, I can not do the same for your language without an intensive help of a sited local language speaker who has a full knowledge of ANSI and Unicode format in his/her language. You can search such converter tools of your language font texts at web, and if existed, it will be a temporary solution. Otherwise, your dream of accessing the ANSI character text becomes an utopia. Re: [AI] how to activate java in firefox
Yes now that trick has become old and no longer found such options in the newer versions of firefox. so, here is the trick to follow. thogh it is little inaccessible but imagine yourself and try. I have done and got success. Please read below the mini article in the discussed regard. Trick to disable or enable java script in firefox. Hello, In Firefox 25,as part of an effort to simplify the Firefox options set and protect users from unintentially damaging their Firefox, the option to disable JavaScript was removed from the Firefox Options window. However, the option to disable JavaScript was not removed from Firefox entirely. You can still access it from about:config or by installing an add-on. about:config 1. In the address bar, type "about:config" (with no quotes), and press Enter. 2. Click "I'll be careful, I promise" 3. In the search bar, search for "javascript.enabled" (with no quotes). 4. Right click the result named "javascript.enabled" and click "Toggle". JavaScript is now disabled. To Re-enable JavaScript, repeat these steps. Add-ons You can alternatively install an add-on that lets you disable JavaScript, such as •QuickJava (to easily disable and enable JavaScript, automatic loading of images, and other content) •No-Script (to disable JavaScript on a per page basis, as required) Thank you and I hope this helps! Re: [AI] wanted typing tutor
Hi Shyam jee, No I have not made Hindi_Wachak because Lekha comes with Jaws and NVDA is with Hindi-Espeak. I thought that if a human voice Lekha is there, no one will use my machine voiced HindiWachak and My laboure will be worthless. Even the dolphin computer made Hal comes with Hindi TTs. There is one screen reader called Cobra which do not have Hindi text reader. But I believe that definitely ninety-nine percent of VI Hindi speakers even may not have heard the name of Cobra screen reader. The use of Cobra is far from imagination. Every one is crazy for Jaws, after Jaws NVDA is preferred and a few numbers for Windows-eyes but surely no one for cobra. In this scenario, Hindiwachak may be useless. But if demanded , I can consider. [AI] Legally Free download of Spell checker and office in your language is available.
Hi list fellows, Some friend have regularly asked me that whether there exists the spelling checker system in his/her language? I thought that it may be useful to post what I know. Sorry if you are already using it. If you do not know and want to have it; Do the following. Visit http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/office-language-interface-pack-lip-downloads-HA001113350.aspx There you will find a table containing a list of different languages in which spelling checker and Microsoft Office is available. It has a lists of almost all major languages of Indian sub-continent. Be careful to download the appropriate version of Language interface pack which matches your office package (not windows version!). If you are using a cracked version of windows, there is a risk that Microsoft can detect it and inform you that you are using a pirate version. But for genuine, there is no provlem. These utilities are legally free if your windows is a legal own. Rest is your risk and wish. Re: [AI] Is windows8 accessable?
thanks for your prompt reply. now I have a query that what is the basic funda of using tuch screen on a PC/laptop. as I know that we are able to perform well on mobile having tuch. but they 2 are different. in desing and their tasks are also different. so how do a blind person can perform his task on a desktop or laptop. as they have a big screen and contains a vast number of function. we can perform various tasks by keyboard. now we have to locate that key by duble tabbing. so this may lead to latency in our perfomence. member pls comment on my views. as I am kene to know about tuch screen. [AI] An interesting article.
FULLY ACCESSIBLE TOUCH SCREENS FOR THE BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED Shaun K. Kane, Jeffrey P. Bigham and Jacob O. Wobbrock University of Washington ABSTRACT Recent advances in touch screen technology have increased the usability of touch screens for sighted users and prompted a wave of new touch screen-based devices. However, touch screens are still largely inaccessible to blind people because they require the user to visually locate objects on the screen. To address this problem, we developed an application called Slide Rule that uses audio output and gesture input to enable blind people to interact with touch screens. In this paper, we describe the design and development of Slide Rule, and a user study in which 10 blind people compared Slide Rule to a button-based Pocket PC. Results show that Slide Rule was significantly faster than the Pocket PC, and was preferred by 7 of 10 participants. Slide Rule has the potential to significantly increase accessibility on a wide range of touch screen devices. BACKGROUND Although touch screens have existed for decades, new advances in touch screen interfaces, as seen 1 2 in products such as Apple’s iPhone and Microsoft Surface , have renewed consumer interest in touch interfaces. In addition to these devices, touch screens are increasingly being incorporated into other devices, such as photocopiers and other office equipment, supermarket checkout kiosks, airport ticket kiosks, automatic teller machines, elevator controls, and voting machines. These touch screen interfaces offer several benefits to sighted users. One such advantage is the ability to present varied interactive content in a single space. For example, a touch screen device can display a large- size map or image, and pop up a keyboard only when needed, providing additional functionality in a smaller space. Another advantage of touch screens is discoverability. Rather than requiring users to remember control keys, touch screens allow users to see a list of options and tap the desired option. However, touch screens can present significant accessibility barriers to blind users. Most touch screens provide no audio or tactile feedback, making it difficult or impossible to locate items on the screen. Because of this, blind users may need to be shown the locations of on-screen objects by a sighted person, may need to use an alternative accessible interface (if available), or may be completely unable to use some technology. As more devices become touch screen-enabled, these accessibility barriers may prevent blind and visually impaired people from using consumer devices or performing essential job functions. Some blind community groups have noticed this problem and have reached out to technology developers. Recently, Stevie Wonder visited the Consumer Electronics Show to remind device manufacturers to consider blind people when developing new products (1). However, very few Figure 1. A blind person reads a list of email messages using Slide Rule on an Apple iPhone. Slide Rule uses audio output only and does not display information on the screen. 1 http://www.apple.com/iphone/ 2 http://www.microsoft.com/surface/ ACCESSIBLE TOUCH SCREENS touch screen-based devices currently provide any accessibility support for blind users. While some past research projects have attempted to increase the accessibility of touch screen-based systems (e.g. 2,3,4), these systems required both a touch screen and additional hardware, such as an external keypad or a tactile overlay. Since this hardware is not always available, these systems are not reliably accessible. Nokia is currently developing a touch screen with raised tactile buttons (5), but has not announced a release date for this product. The screen reader Mobile Speak3 provides access to touch screen-based mobile phones, but provides relatively little access to the touch screen. Mobile Speak primarily provides access through the phone keypad, but allows users to tap the four corners of the touch screen as additional buttons. Thus, Mobile Speak is not usable on phones that do not have at least some physical keys. PROBLEM STATEMENT Most current non-tactile touch screens cannot be easily used by the blind and visually impaired. These users may encounter several problems when attempting to interact with a touch screen: 1) lack of accessible audio or tactile feedback when performing actions; 2) lack of ability to determine the current state of the touch screen device; and 3) difficulty in selecting the desired item on screen. Slide Rule addresses these concerns by allowing users to gesture on a touch screen without visual feedback. Furthermore, while touch screen accessibility can be improved through the addition of tactile overlays, physical buttons, or other hardware, users cannot rely on this additional hardware being available for every touch screen. Thus, Slide Rule provides full touch screen accessibility using
