[AI] Checking of Proof of Disability in the handicap compartment on the Western Line

2013-12-21 Thread payal jethra
Hello Friends,

Wanted to share with you all an experience of travelling on the
Western Railway on Saturday afternoon. While travelling on a partially
crowded handicap coach from Malad to Vile Parle around half past noon
yesterday, I noticed a TC step into the compartment at Andheri. He
sounded like a man of authority and spoke in fluent English and Hindi.
He loudly announced that non-handicap commuters would have to
immediately get off the train at the next station.

While pacing around, he began to ask some commuters to produce their
Disability Certificate. He took to task a man who was accompanying an
orthopeadically handicap passenger and said that the man ought to be
travelling in the general compartment while only his physically
challenged friend would be allowed to board this coach.

When Vile Parle approached, the TC got off the train with the escort
of the physically challenged man and two other women whom he had asked
for proof of disability. I saw him stand at one corner of a tea stall
talking with them as I proceeded to search my way.

This may have come as an after effect of all the effort put into
writing to and following up with Railway Authorities. However, it sure
seems like the beginning of a break through with Indian Railway.

Thanks to all our friends who have brought about awareness and
persisted in opening the eyes of the Railway Authorities about
inconveniences caused to us while travelling in handicap compartments.
Probably, this tells us that there is light at the end of this tunnel.
If the Railway staff do take up this matter seriously and keep up the
supervision and check during peak hours as well, commuting by the
handicap coach may soon be a pleasant experience for all of us.

Regards,

Payal Jethra

Re: [AI] Talking ATM big boon for visually impaired

2013-12-21 Thread KanchanPamnani
Indeed it is a big boon for us. We of course need to identify the ATM
closest to us and then learn to use it.
Getting ATMs to talk was a struggle and it will become worth while only if
everyone in this group uses it.
I found the nearest talking ATM to my house and I learnt to use it. For
efficiency I will have to use it a few more times. I now plan to use the one
nearest to my office. ATMs apart from being convenient are also good for
emergencies.

We also need to use these ATMs to show the Banking community that we mean
business.
Please use talking ATMs and let the group know if any of the features have
been disabled.
Use your right so we have might.
Kanchan

Talking ATM big boon for visually impaired
Dec 21, 2013, 12.17AM IST TNN[ Pavan M V ]

BANGALORE: Madhu Singhal requested several banks to install a talking
ATM. Now, the efforts of this visually impaired founder and managing
trustee of Mitra Jyothi have paid off. The Union Bank of India's ATM
at the National Institute of Fashion Technology in HSR Layout will be
operational from Saturday.

Madhu said, "This ATM will prevent the visually-challenged from being
taken for a ride by people who assist them in withdrawing money."

This Talking ATM, the first of its kind in Bangalore, has a
Braille-enabled keypad and an audio system to guide the visually
impaired through the various steps of getting cash.

Branch manager Shobha Chander said a security guard will be around
24/7 to help the visually-impaired enter the kiosk. The user should
put on her headphones and plug in the jack to the ATM before inserting
the debit/credit card to go ahead with the transaction, she added.

A series of audio instructions guide the user through various steps to
finish the transaction -- be it withdrawing money or checking the
balance. The user also has the option to render the screen blank to
prevent others from knowing the transaction details.

Shobha said a Braille dot embedded on the numeral 5 holds the key for
the visually impaired to use the machine. "We request them to carry
headphones while using this ATM," she said.

The bank is examining the possibility of installing a permanent
headphone at the ATM but the apprehension that it could be stolen or
become a source of infection has made them wary of going ahead with
it.

This ATM can also be used by all other people.

The Talking ATM is near Mitra Jyothi, where over 60 visually-impaired
individuals undergo a three-month computer and independent living
skills training. This organization has been working for their welfare
for the past 24 years.
