Re: [AI] Javed's Update on meeting with the Wice President today
% The new rights bill talks about 1% reservation for the mentally handicapped but reduces the quota for the visually challenged. How can a mentally handicapped person be appointed in any of the UPSC posts, for example? There are some problems both in the recent Supreme Court judgement and even in the new rights bill. The visually challenged should come forward and voice their concerns. Regards, Rajasekhar Hyderabad -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of avinash shahi Sent: 30 December 2013 17:30 To: jnuvision; accessindia Subject: [AI] Javed's Update on meeting with the Wice President today 'A eight-member delegation of the Disabled Rights Group (DRG) and the National Platform for the Rights of the Disabled (NPRD) met the Vice President of India, Shri Hamid Ansari this morning in their continuing effort to garner support for the introduction and passage of the Disability Rights Bill when parliament is convened to pass the Vote on Account. The delegation tried to impress upon the Vice President that there has been an inordinate delay in introducing and passing the Bill which spells out the rights of persons with disabilities, though the process of drafting the new law started over four years back and has gone through various stages. The delegation sought the Vice President's support in ensuring that this extremely important piece of legislation is taken up by the government for introduction and enactment. Shri Hamid Ansari gave the delegation a patient hearing. He said that he empathises with the cause and is all for the speedy enactment of this legislation. The Vice President said that since India has signed and ratified the United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons (UNCRPD), it is incumbent that India harmonise its laws also in consonance with the UNCRPD. The DRG and the NPRD thank the Vice President for the patient hearing and empathizing with the cause of the disabled. V. Prasada Sarma | In a smart world man has a number of gadgets to make his work and life comfortable and communicate faster. But for the visually challenged poor, it is still a cane that helps him/her find way. With increasing population and traffic and spaces becoming more crowded, its use is becoming difficult. To help overcome the handicap, the Vision Aid Charitable Services Society (VACSS) here has come out with an electronic cane. The cane measuring 20 inches is made of UPVC. It comprises a sensor with transmitter and receiver at the lower-end, a vibrator close to the grip and works on a rechargeable battery. Beeps and vibrations When the user switches it on, it emits broken beeps and vibration when the object/obstacle is in the vicinity and continuous beep when closer. The beep is to alert the other people about the presence of a visually challenged person and the vibration alerts the user about the objects in the path. The range is about 1.5 metres. Anything longer is likely to be counterproductive and if it is too short may lead to collision, explains M.S. Raju, president of VACSS. Quoting World Health Organisation statistics, Mr. Raju, an IITian from Kharagpur and former executive chairman of the Stone Telecom, says while about two crore people have visual impairment in the country, the highest in the world, half of them cannot see at all. About 20 lakh have to move about to lead their life. For them there has not been any improvement over the white cane for a long time now, he observes. Mr. Raju says the electronic cane being produced in the other countries is either expensive or the research is incomplete. In the country, IIT, Delhi and Kharagpur, have developed prototypes with more sensors and analogue system where the users are alerted through earphones. However, it cuts off the user from the environment, he points out. They are costlier, longer and heavier, he says. The cane developed by the VACSS is easy to use and costs a maximum of Rs.2,500. Re: [AI] Electronic cane to support visually challenged
It is a finished product, and should be ready for dispatch somewhere in Feb. The institution is run by an elderly person M.S. Raju, who was an IIT Grad. Its a 20 Inch attachment, which you can either use independently or attach it with your existing cains. Visit their website which does not talk of this product as of now: www.visionaidindia.org I have asked for an email with full details, and I'll let the list know if that comes through. [AI] Irda to bring out proposal for life cover to disabled
Irda to bring out proposal for life cover to disabled Currently, there are no definitive guidelines defining the cover for people with disability M Saraswathy | Mumbai January 3, 2014 Last Updated at 11:51 IST Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (Irda) is looking to bring out a proposal for providing life insurance cover to people with disability. While disability is not explicitly excluded from life insurance policies, there are no definitive guidelines defining the cover for such individuals. The proposal is at a discussion stage at the actuarial department. We will soon bring out a discussion paper on this, said a senior Irda official. This proposal will first be presented as a paper to life insurers for their feedback and then, a detailed guideline would be formulated. At present, disability insurance is provided under personal accident policies by general insurance companies. Here, the policy provides for income replacement if the policyholder gets physically injured in any accident leading to loss of income for the family. These policies usually cover permanent total disability, temporary total disability and permanent partial disability, apart from death. Disability is also covered by life insurance companies, wherein a cover is provided for accidental disability. These products are offered both, as a policy and as a rider with an insurance plan. If anything happens to the insured during the policy tenure, the insurance company pays him/her a lump-sum amount. However, this does not provide any protection for disabilities existing from one's birth or early childhood. Insurance sector officials said that there, the regulator would clearly define what is disability, the types of disability-permanent or ongoing. The various ailments are also expected to be classified either as static and permanent, which would include polio and physical disability like loss of sight at birth, loss of hand/leg at birth among others. Other types of ongoing ailments like severe Hepatitis B, cancer of the last stages and severe damage to the lungs or heart would be put into a separate category. While permanent and static disability is expected to be included as the category that would be covered by life insurance, progressive and critical stages of ailments are likely to be excluded from coverage. This is because such ailments are very risky to be covered, from an insurance perspective, said a senior life insurance official. Officials close to this development said that at a future stage, when there is adequate data and research on these ailments, such patients could be provided life insurance cover, albeit at a higher premium. Not all types of cancer are excluded from life insurance coverage. While patients in the last stages of such life-threatening diseases are excluded from life insurance coverage, others at an early stage are not denied a cover. These patients usually pay 30-40% higher premium than regular policyholders, due to the higher risk involved in their coverage. Re: [AI] reg-job in US
Hi, A couple of questions: What do you intend pursuing here-batchelers or masters? Regardless, have you taken the SATs (for batchelers) or GRE/GMAT (for masters)? Are you a U.S. permanent resident or citizen? You cannot be issued an F1 visa (student's visa) until you can present the I-20 issued by a school. As far as employment is concerned, you can work on-campus for a maximum of 20 hours a week. You cannot work off-campus while the school is on. You can, however, work full-time during summer or other vacations by using your optional practical training. You are also allowed to stay and work in the States for 18 months after completion of your degree (curricular practical training). This can be extended, especially if you are majoring in a STEM field. If you are not a U.S. citizen, the cost of attendence will almost turn out to be equal for private and state schools. Also remember that several private universities also offer financial aid to international students, though it is very limited. Java is one of the web application platforms. It's required on the hosting server not the client. As far the question of some websites not working correctly on your laptop goes, they may be requiring JavaScript to be enabled on your browser. Re: [AI] How to access Remote Server applications using Screen Reader
Didn't see any further emails on the subject so thought of responding. Ignore if resolved. You can access remote server using Remote Desktop Protocol (mstsc in Run dialog box). I've used NVDA and JAWS on the remote computer and found both working quite well. NVDA just needs be installed on the remote computer and it works. For JAWS, you need to procure Remote Access License which costs Rs. 11000 approximately. Once you have the remote access license enabled, just install JAWS as a licensed version on your client computer and the 40 minute demo on as many remote servers as you wish to access. You can check if remote access is enabled on the client computer in the JAWS About dialog box (INSERT+J followed by A). [AI] WORLD BRAILLE DAY.
World Braille Day is celebrated every year on 4th January around the world to commemorate the birthday of Louis Braille. Louis Braille is credited with inventing the Braille language which helps blind people to read as well as write. Louis Braille was born in France. At the age of 3, he accidentally became blind. However, he had a great yearning to be able to read and write properly, despite his disability. An attentive kid at school, at the age of 15, he developed a set of symbols by making raised dots on a piece of paper. The dots could be easily felt by hand, thus enabling even the blind to feel them and hence, read and write. The language developed y Louis Braille is today known as the Braille language. Louis's work was not only confined to alphabets. He was passionate about music too, and thus, in the latter part of his life, he even developed Braille language for music. While developing the language for music, he made a point to keep it flexible so that it could be adapted to almost any musical instrument around the world. Although the system was very useful for those with visual impairment, it was only 2 years after Louis's death in 1854 that the system was adopted by his school. Soon after its adoption, it grew very popular in the rest of France. The penetration of the system in other countries was quite slow. The World Braille Day is celebrated every year to recognize the efforts of Louis Braille. His simple yet effective invention made it possible for blind people to read and write. The World Braille Day is relatively a little known occasion. However, for individuals working for the blind, it is a day of great significance. There is no public holiday as such in any part of the world on this day. Various NGOs as well as other organizations come together on this day to raise awareness about the apathy towards blind people and to help them be equal with the rest of the people. Various competitions are organized across cities specifically for the blind. Awareness is also raised about the new technologies coming in the field of Braille language on this day. For example, in the earlier days, a special type of typewriter had to be used in order to write Braille language. Now a days, computers are also equipped to do the job. The World Braille Day is taken as an opportunity by various organizations and philanthropic individuals around the world to help the blind out there. The World Braille Day in 2009 marked the 200th birthday anniversary of Louis Braille. It was celebrated around the world, including that in France, where a special exhibition was organized in a museum dedicated to Louis Braille. In India, Belgium as well as Italy, special coins were released with the image of Louis Braille. zoher kheriwala taheri menswear mumbai. skype id zoher.kheriwala Time to meet up again! Re: [AI] Query regarding IBPS rejection.
This is the matter of eligibility, please refer to the language used in eligibility section of the advertisement. They have full right to reject anyone if the candidate doesn't possess minimum qualification on stipulated date. Technically IBPS is not responsible for any delay on the part of university and an exception may not be allowed merely on the ground of delay in result by few days. On 1/4/14, Vishal vishalpawl...@gmail.com wrote: Hello all, Yesterday I went for IBPS PO interview, but they did not allow me. Yesterday I talk to the concern persan of university, now they are ready to give me an official letter for that issue. In that situation, please suggest what should I do? [AI] how to convert audio cassette into digital archive
To copy your tapes to your PC for digital archiving, you'll need exactly three things: A cassette player. I dug out my old Walkman, which I found perfectly suited to the task, but you could also use a tape deck. A stereo patch cord. Specifically, you need a cable that connects your Walkman's headphone jack to your sound card's line-in jack. You can get one at Radio Shack for around $5. If you're connecting a tape deck, you may need an adapter to accommodate its larger headphone jack. Audacity, an open-source, cross-platform program that makes simple work of recording and editing audio. It's available for Windows, Mac, and Linux. If you plan to turn your tapes into MP3 files, make sure to get the LAME MP3 encoder as well; there's a link to it on the Audacity download page. (Detailed instructions on setting up the LAME MP3 encoder are included in Gina's feature on how to make a ringtone from an MP3 with Audacity.) Getting StartedAfter installing Audacity, you'll need to tweak a few settings. First, visit Preferences (accessible under the Edit menu) and make sure Channels is set to two. In the same window, hit the File Formats tab and configure Audacity for use with the LAME MP3 encoder you downloaded. Click the Find Library button, then navigate to the folder on your hard drive containing the file lame_enc.dll. Finally, choose a bit rate for your recordings. 128Kbps is more than ample for audiobooks, but for music consider doubling it to 256Kbps. Now it's time to check your line-in connection and audio levels. Put a tape in your Walkman and start it playing; you should hear sound coming from your PC's speakers. Click the input level meter and enable Start Monitoring to see a live meter. Then you can adjust the input volume using the slider to the right. Keeping in mind that your first recording may require some trial and error, rewind your tape to the beginning, press Record in Audacity, then start the tape. If it's music, you needn't record each song individually, starting and stopping your tape deck along the way. Instead, let Audacity record the whole side. Then, use the Selection tool to highlight a song (you'll be able to tell where it ends by the few seconds of flatline, which indicate silence) and save the selection as an MP3 (or whatever file format you choose). If it's a book on tape, you might want to divide the recording into, say, 10-minute segments so it's easier to navigate. This makes organization a bit more complicated, as you'll need to name and tag your MP3s so they'll play sequentially; I recommend something along the lines of 01-Stephen King-The Stand.mp3, 02-Stephen King-The Stand.mp3, and so on. After you've saved your MP3s, you can use your favorite music manager (I recommend Media Monkey) to apply tags and add album art.
