 Hi all,

My two scents worth on this subject. Warning, I could be talking through
 my
 hat.
 1. Get hold of a lawyer . It's always handy to have one around to ensure
 a
 strong legal position.
 2. Contact law enforcement.
 3. It is counterproductive to make snap judgments before knowing all the
facts. It is easy to say be strong and this kind of thing is dependent on

 a
person's strengths etc but this advice, though well-meant is mail box
clutter if it is given without knowing the facts.

 Hi List,

Another good move which we are able to see due to RBI and IBA
guidelines. Banking Codes And Standards Board of India which lays down
the voluntary codes adopted by banks, in its 2014 version of Code of
Bank's Commitments to Customers have included a section on senior
 citizens and differently abled.

The 2 most important clauses one borrowed from RBI circular of course are:
  x. We will ensure that all the banking facilities such as cheque book
facility, ATM facility, Net banking facility, locker facility, retail
 loans, credit
cards etc., are invariably offered to the visually challenged without
 any discrimination.
xi. We will render all possible assistance to the visually challenged
 for availing various banking facilities.

All these efforts have insured that at least the basic banking
services are not denied to visually impaired. Although in terms of the
credit facilities such as Credit Card, Loans, and some others we still
 need to do a lot.

On 8th May 2014 we were pleasantly surprised to find All India
Confederation of the Blind (AICB), had joined the cause by filing a
petition for reservation in 2 of the 7 posts we were contesting for.
This made our case stronger and put more pressure on the defaulting
government ministries/departments. After a grueling one hour session,
the honorable court questioned why the matter was not presented before
the Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities? To which our
learned counsel, Mr. Pankaj Sinha, replied that in the past similar
cases had been taken up before the CCPD. However since its order are
not legally binding, they had not been implemented by various
government bodies. The honorable court ruled vide its order (Click

the honorable CCPDs ruling be binding. Visit the URL to read the full

Congratulations for successfully clearing UGC NET examination. This

think of a possibility due to which I also got confused. In the list
of passed candidates, the first list in the PDF file contains the
candidates that have cleared JRF and the second list contains those
who have passed in lectureship. Is it a case where you went through
only the first list? Have you checked your marks under the marklist

i.e., general, SC, ST, PWD, etc. Revert after checking out all the
 above mentioned details.

[AI] ADF Scanner-Urgent Advise Required Please

2014-05-21 Thread Rahul Kelapure
Hi Friends,

Recently I got transfered to Enforsement Department where I have to
deal with lot of papers and the department had asked me to find out
which scanner I would require in order to effectively discharge my
duties.

I would require a high spead Automatic Document Feeder scanner of
substancially high capacity. the auto duel side scanning feature if
available and which I may use as flatbed scanner as well if required.

It should be accessible to me independantly or with some workaround
and most importantly it must not be very huge in size as I would
require it to install it on my desk only.

The scanning area should be of Legal size because a lot of documents
shall be in that size.

Please provide me options to choose from in order to show it to the
relevant authorities.

You may suggest me anything else relevent aulternately.

This is urgent, as the department has asked me to finalize the model ASAP.

Awaiting your responce please.

Thanks and warm regards,

Rahul.

Dear Anjina,

It would be worth trying OCR software like fine reader and Kurzweil

don't need OCR. But they convert large documents into readable
formats like word, rtf, etc. However, if Zamzar works, it should be

[AI] My latest blogpost: Why consulting your ophthalmologist is important after diagnosis?

2014-05-21 Thread Subramani L
Why consulting your ophthalmologist is important after diagnosis?

R.P. is a progressive degenerative retinal disease with no cure or
treatment. Then why should I go to my ophthalmologist regularly?

The question from a patient in the audience almost stunned the doctor
who gave a presentation on newly emerging treatments at a gathering in
Bangalore.

Most of the patients and their care givers/family think going to
doctor is all about cure or treatment. Though that could be true about
any other medical situation, it will not be applicable when it comes
to dealing with R.P.

More than the doctor needing us, we need the doctor. Why? There are
many reasons, but let me mention the important among them.

Dear Mr. Vamshi,

Thanks for your email.

The moment you write an email to any e-group/mailing list, your
information becomes public. All the email senders of AI have already
made their information public, so there is nothing to worry about
filling the form. But, if you or anyone gives a potent argument
against creating this database, I will delete the form. Please specify

As you know, there is a group dedicated for this purpose. Interested
people can interact there. There are already more than380 members,

Considering the vulnerability of visually challenged, especially in a
sector like banking, I think it is not a good idea to publish names
and posts in the public domain. So, please rethink on this issue.

Need for Bank Branches / ATMs to be made accessible to persons with
disabilities

RBI/2013-14/598

DBOD.No.Leg.BC.113/09.07.005/2013-14

May 21, 2014

All Scheduled Commercial Banks

(excluding RRBs)

Dear Sir/Madam,

Need for Bank Branches / ATMs to be made accessible to persons with
disabilities

Please refer to our circular DBOD.No.Leg.BC.123 /09.07.005/2008-09 dated
April 13, 2009 on the captioned subject, wherein banks were advised to
provide, inter alia, ramps in all existing and future ATMs, and make at
least one third of new ATMs installed as talking ATMs with Braille keypads.

2. We have been receiving several suggestions from members of public
through Government of India and otherwise, on facilitating easy access to
bank branches and ATMs by persons with disabilities for undertaking day to
day banking transactions. We have examined such suggestions. As advised in
the above circular, banks have to take necessary steps to provide all
existing ATMs / future ATMs with ramps so that wheel chair users / persons
with disabilities can easily access them. Care may also be taken to make
arrangements in such a way that the height of the ATMs do not create an
impediment in their use by wheelchair users. However, in cases where it is
impracticable to provide such ramp facilities, whether permanently fixed to
earth or otherwise, this requirement may be dispensed with, for reasons
recorded and displayed in branches or ATMs concerned.

3. Banks are also to take appropriate steps, including providing of ramps
at the entrance of the bank branches, wherever feasible, so that the
persons with disabilities/wheel chair users can enter bank branches and
conduct business without difficulty. Banks are advised to report the
progress made in this regard periodically to their respective Customer
Service Committee of the Board and ensure compliance.

4. Further, it has come to our notice that some of the banks have not made
at least one third of the new ATMs installed as talking ATMs with Braille
keypads as advised vide circular referred to above. It is, therefore,
reiterated that banks should make all new ATMs installed from July 1, 2014
as talking ATMs with Braille keypads. Banks should lay down a road map for
converting all existing ATMs as talking ATMs with Braille keypads and the
same may be reviewed from time to time by the Customer Service Committee of
the Board.

5. In addition to the above, magnifying glasses should also be provided in
all bank branches for the use of persons with low vision, wherever they
require for carrying out banking transactions with ease. The branches
should display at a prominent place notice about the availability of
magnifying glasses and other facilities available for persons with
disabilities.

Yours faithfully,

(Rajesh Verma)

Re: [AI] Fw: Make all new ATMs talking machines from July: RBI to banks

2014-05-21 Thread Amar Jain
Just a quick question: what is the progress on the standardization of
talking ATMs? I remember that IBA had adopted certain standards. But
are all the banks following the same or its a free will situation?

Because in my office building we have 2 ATMs, one by HDFC which is
partially voicing machine and other from Ratnakar Bank which is a
fully functioning talking ATM.

The current directive is indeed a great progress in the matter, but I
wish RBI could have stressed that IBA standards should be adopted by
all banks so that there are no partially talking ATMs being installed
just to comply with the directive.

Amar Jain

[AI] Fw: Make all new ATMs talking machines from July: RBI to banks

2014-05-21 Thread Xavier's Resource Centre for the Visuall St. Xavier's College

Dear All
The RBI notification of yesterday I am pasting below is certainly a step in the
right direction but as Amar Jain in an earlier email has correctly pointed out
the problem is one of standardisation and the deliberate or otherwise
misinterpretation of the word 'talking'. The XRCVC had submitted a detailed
representation on accessibility of ATMs to the RBI last month and they have
taken part action. One will have to chase them to make sure that they benchmark
the accessibility standards. All the same it is a step in the right direction.
