It is very good news for the disabled people in india, but still there
is confusion that upsc would slect disabled candidates in services
or not, because after petition they would allow you to filip the forms
and get into entry but the final result will show the actual result.

Anyone on the list? congrats.
http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-newdelhi/17000-candidates-clear-upsc-prelims/article6502135.ece
Nearly 17,000 candidates have qualified the Civil Services
(preliminary) Examination, 2014, conducted by the Union Public Service
Commission, the results of which were declared on Tuesday morning.

With over 4,50,000 candidates appearing for the examination on August
24, the results were declared in a record 50-day time period.

The successful candidates will now have to appear in the mains
examination, which will be conducted from December 14 to December 20.

According to an UPSC official, there was an increase of 40 per cent in
the number of students appearing in this year's examination compared
to last year's 3,24,279 . The official said that in previous years,
results were declared within an average of 68 days from the day of the
examination. "Successful candidates will get more time this year to
study because of early declaration of results," said the official.

This year was tumultuous for the UPSC with a controversy that erupted
over the pattern of the Civil Services Examination in July demanding a
change in the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) or paper II.
Students had taken to the streets claiming the examination put
aspirants from rural areas or with Hindi background at a disadvantage.
The Union government had decided then that marks of the English
section questions, asked in paper-II, would not be included for
gradation or merit in the exam.

, The UPSC has advised candidates not to file RTI applications seeking
details of their marks which will be provided to them only after the
entire selection process for the Civil Services Examination is over.
"Candidates are also informed that marks, cut-off marks, and answer
keys of the Civil Services (preliminary) Examination, 2014, will be
provided only after the entire process of the Civil Services
Examination, 2014, is over i.e. after the declaration of the final
result. Therefore, no application under the RTI Act, 2005, or
otherwise will be entertained ," the UPSC said in a statement.

The list of successful candidates, who have qualified for admission to
the Indian Forest Service (main) examination, 2014, was also declared.
"As many as 1,106 candidates have been declared successful to appear
for the Indian Forest Services (main) examination which will be held
on November 22. They were also selected through the Civil Services
(preliminary) Examination," said an official.

The successful candidates have been asked to fill in the Detailed
Application Form (DAF) for the Civil Services Main (CSM) examination
scheduled to be held from December 14 this year. The DAF (CSM) will be
available on the UPSC website from October 28 till November 11, 2014.

ICICI is in fact one of those banks which has extensive guidelines and
a good comprehensive policy for people with blindness / disabilities.

If you have met with rejection in writing then let us know, otherwise
just apply again and let us get your account activated. At least with
private banks, the thing to do is to show them the circular or email
the customer care that you are facing problem in account opening. They
take care of the rest.

I do not have any banking relation with ICICI, but if needed, I am
happy to help.

Constitutional changes sought for betterment of disabled persons

Castigating the successive Central governments for discarding welfare
of people with disability, the city-based activists for the disabled
community on Friday demanded constitutional amendments to improve
their living conditions.

Activists rued that Parliament is seeking to enact a law for
safeguarding rights of persons with disabilities without giving it a
constitutional status.

"We need legal protection, which is guaranteed to SC and ST community.
We also demand political representations at all levels. That apart,
amendments should be made to the constitution to include the disabled
in various articles which would ensure welfare," said V. Rajashekar,
deputy coordinator for the Cell for Disabled at The English and
Foreign Languages University (Eflu).

Another activist K. Srinivas said they have demanded an increase in
job reservation from three per cent to five per cent before a
parliamentary standing committee. "The reservation should also be
given to us in promotions and not just direct recruitment. This should
be guaranteed by the constitution," he said.

The activists were representing the Hyderabad Alliance for Disability
Rights, an umbrella organisation of five other organisations.

Former legislator Mrs. Christine Lazarus was also present.

The Breakfast Club ©1984 Universal City Studios Inc. and Dino De

The songs, photos, apps, and even recent searches from one of your
Android devices can be immediately enjoyed across all of your Android
devices.
Material design: fluid, purposeful motion
More tangible interaction
Content responds to your touch in an intuitive way.

The right information at the right moment
With Lollipop, your tablet shows your inbox alongside the message you
have open, while your watch shows new emails as they arrive.

Your device, your rules
For fewer worries and disruptions, adjust your settings so only
certain people and notifications get through. When it's important,
respond directly from your lockscreen.

More time playing, less time charging
Power for the long haul with a battery saver feature that extends your
device by up to 90 minutes. And now it's easier to manage your power
usage - see the estimated time left before you need to charge, and
when you're charging, approximately how much time until it's topped up
and ready to go.

More ways to secure your device
Share your device securely with guest user mode. Or create multiple
user accounts to enable friends to log in on your device. In either
case, no one will be able to access any of your stuff. And you can use
Android Smart Lock to secure your phone or tablet by pairing it with a
trusted device like your wearable or even your car.

doing what you’re doing

[AI] Fwd: Can Fingernails Predict Health Troubles?

2014-10-16 Thread Aravind R
Fingernails can predict health troubles as changes in the shape,
color, or texture of nails can be indicators of a variety of
conditions. For example, one of the signs of lung disease is nail
clubbing, a variation in the shape of the fingernails, in which they
gradually begin to curve around the fingertips. Yellowing of the
fingernails is often a sign of respiratory health troubles, such as
chronic bronchitis, while a blue tint to the nails may be due to
reduced oxygen flow. Spooned nails, in which there is a visible
indentation similar to a scoop, can indicate liver disease or heart
disease.
More about fingernails:
*Fingernails are made of keratin, the same protein that makes up the hair.

*Psoriasis, a skin condition that causes skin cells to accumulate into
dry, scaly patches instead of shedding, first shows signs in the
fingernails approximately 10% of the time.

*Fingernails grow nearly twice as fast as toenails, at around 0.14
inches (3.5 mm) per month on average for fingers versus 0.62 inches
(1.6 mm) for toenails--it can take around three to six months to grow
an entire new nail.

nothing is difficult unless you make it appear so.

Re: [AI] [SayEverything] Urgent help required with regard to linux:

2014-10-16 Thread Bhavya shah
Hi,
In May this year I had attempted to switch to Linux as my primary OS,
but I was unsuccessful, because I didn't have enough time to dedicate
in learning a new OS. Also, after May, I no longer had tech savey
sighted assistance, so I couldn't reliably practise more of Linux.
For Linux, Orca is the primarily used screen reader, though some
primitive screen readers such as Suz and Linux screen reader are
available, or were once.
There is an Orca mailing list, to which I have remained subscribed
just in case I re-attempt switching to Linux in the future.
One word of caution, I have heard that very few Linux distros are
accessible, so you should consult Orca user (by their respective
mailing lists) and ask them about the accessibility of the distro you
are talking about.

Re: [AI] regarding credit card of private bank for visually impaired

2014-10-16 Thread Amar Jain
Hi Pooja And Vikas,

Suffice it to say that no Bank of whatsoever category can deny you
credit card merely on the ground of thumb impression or visual
disability as on date, due to the directives of RBI and IBA.

I am myself a credit card user of private banks (as per your
requirements), and I am happy to help if you are otherwise meeting the
eligibility norms of the banks.

Vikas: you have been rejected in writing for your usage of thumb
impression? Or it is just a verbal communication. And did you reach
out to senior management of the bank or registered a complaint with
the bank with regard to the same?

Pooja: as a first step get your application logged in and show the RBI
and IBA circulars to your agent, and affix them with your application
if you deem fit.

I am happy to help in getting your application processed if you are
stuck. Feel free to contact me on: +91-9892622230 preferably after
6.45 P.M. on weekdays or at your ease over the weekends (Saturdays
inclusive).

Regards,

Stem cells to treat blindness appear safe

An experimental treatment for blindness that uses embryonic stem cells
appears to be safe, and it improved vision in more than half of the
patients who got it, two early studies show.
Researchers followed 18 patients for up to three years after
treatment. The studies are the first to show safety of an embryonic
stem cell treatment in humans for such a long period.
"It's a wonderful first step but it doesn't prove that (stem cells)
work," said Chris Mason, chair of regenerative medicine at University
College London, who was not part of the research. He said it was
encouraging the studies proved the treatment is safe and dispelled
fears about stem cells promoting tumor growth.
Embryonic stem cells, which are recovered from embryos, can become any
cell in the body. They are considered controversial by some because
they involve destroying an embryo and some critics say adult stem
cells, which are derived from tissue samples, should be used instead.
Scientists have long thought about transforming them into specific
types of cells to help treat various diseases. In the new research,
scientists turned stem cells into retinal cells to treat people with
macular degeneration or Stargardt's macular dystrophy, the leading
causes of blindness in adults and children.
In each patient, the retinal cells were injected into the eye that had
the worst vision. Ten of the 18 patients later reported they could see
better with the treated eye than the other one.
No safety problems were detected. The studies were paid for by the
U.S. company that developed the treatment, Advanced Cell Technology,
and were published online Tuesday in the journal, Lancet.
Dr. Robert Lanza, one of the study authors, said it was significant
the stem cells survived years after the transplant and weren't wiped
out by the patients' own immune systems.
He said patients have regained their independence with their newfound
vision and said some people are now able to use their computers again,
read their watches or travel on their own.
"The next step will be to prove these (stem cell) treatments actually
work," Mason said. "Unless there is a sham group where you inject
saline into (patients') eyes, we can't know for sure that it was the
stem cells that were responsible."

Hi All,
has any one used linux?
One of the companies in bangalore wants to give laptop to blind
students of 10th grade.
they have their own operating system which is based on Linux.
it works exactly like windows.
I wanted to know few things:
1. is linux accessible ?
2. is Orca the only free screen reader for Linux?
3. what other softwares are available for blind apart from screen
reader for linux?
4. can you give me feed back about orca's accessibility?
5. won't memorizing commands for linux and Orca be challenging?
6. are many blind people using linux? (any global statistics would be great)
I am suppose to give feedback by tomorrow so kindly reply as soon as possible.
I have not used linux much so any feed back on accessibility of linux
would be great.
thanks and regards,

I would like to know that whether someone is on the list who uses thumb
impression for signature and has the credit card of any private bank? Or has
some one applied for the same? I contacted to HDFC and city bank. Agents of
both, are denying me on the ground of thumb impression. Any advice/guidance
