[AI] Air India in new disability discrimination row

2014-11-27 Thread M Sivakumar
Air India in new disability discrimination row
Wednesday, 26 November 2014 14:09
Written by Roberto Castiglioni
Beleaguered state-owned carrier Air India policy for transport of
disabled people is under scrutiny on allegations of discrimination
against the disabled.
For some odd reason Air India cannot get their disability policy
right. On Tuesday, India's government told parliament the airline
makes profits on nine of its 370 daily flights. Due to the dire state
of its finances, Air India is now cutting loss-making routes.
As if this wasn't enough, the airline was once again exposed for its
discriminatory policies against the disabled.
On its website the airline states that in order not to violate the
civil rights of passengers with disabilities the use of wheelchairs is
free at all airports. But passengers travelling to the UAE and other
Gulf countries beg to disagree.
Last September the family of a 70-year-old woman had to pay 300 Dirham
(GBP 51/Euro 65/USD 81) to have their relative use a wheelchair.
"Air India does not charge its passengers any fee for using
wheelchairs or wherever it is handling its own flights," the airline's
regional manager said." But in the UAE a third party handles Air India
flights, Rajneesh Bagga explained.
dnata is the handling company that give special handling services to
Air India and over 140 airlines operating into and out of Dubai
Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner
International Airport.
The handling agent said the cost for wheelchair service is 135 Dirham,
165 Dirham less than the amount Air India charges passengers. "Some
carriers levy charges for special handling, but dnata does not accept
payment from passengers for this service," a spokesperson for the
handling company said.
Air India imposes restrictions on the number of passengers with
reduced mobility carried on each flight. Ten wheelchair passengers are
accepted on flights operating to/from the west of India and six per
flight on flights operating to/from the east of India. The airline
says restrictions are imposed the safety of all passengers in case of
an emergency evacuation.
Privately-owned Indian carrier Jet Airways also imposes similar
restrictions, but limited to unaccompanied immobile passengers (WCHC).
Restrictions vary per type of airplane, ranging from three passengers
on Boeing 737s, five on Airbus 330, and seven on Boeing 777s.

I am eager to know has any individual/organisation had suggested
accessibility norms to be adhered in the law in the offing?
Experts who conduct 'access audits' of government buildings need to
pursue this development very closely. Otherwise we will lament
systamatic inaccessibility post-passage as usual.

[AI] help require with mozilla firefox:

2014-11-27 Thread raaju
Respected list, I'm having a serious issues on my mozilla firefox, therefore
need your kind help.

Actually I was happily using mozilla firevfox 8.0 on my win 7 32 bit
machine, but as I get complaint by many website suggesting to upgrade my
firefox, finally I've switch the latest firefox which is 33 or some thing.
As soon as I have upgrade my firefox, I'm not be able to use google website
in a proper manner which I use the most. I couldn't be able to figure out
the interface of google website which is display on the latest firefox or
jaws read out the content of google in a new firefox. In old firefox,
whenever we search any keyword, the result will displayed in a heading so
that we cannavigate the heading by hitting the h key. But this firefox
has no heading list for search result. In fact after typing my key word on
the search box, I've checked out whole website to achieve the search result
by up/down arrow key butt I really get no search results! Only it is cluster
by numerous adds and location!

So from this platform, I humbly request the experts to help me out in this
matter.

Sincerely yours,

Raju singh.

[AI] [NVDA] NVDA 2014.4 is officially live, plus what's under the wraps for 2015.1

Subject: [NVDA] NVDA 2014.4 is officially live, plus what's under the
wraps for 2015.1
To: n...@freelists.org

Dear NVDA users, developers, third-parties and supporters around the world:

What a Thanksgiving dinner it will be: NVDA 2014.4, featuring enhanced
speech dictionaries, browse mode changes and host of other changes is now
live. Besides new options in speech dictionaries, 2014.4 includes ability to
restart with or without add-ons (contributed by a user in Bulgaria), ability
to press next/previous edit field command in browse mode to move to edit
combo boxes, revised braille tables and other braille enhancements. Please
follow this link to learn more about 2014.4:

http://community.nvda-project.org/blog/NVDA2014.4Released

In addition, here's a sneak peek at what's under the wraps in 2015.1:

* Navigation quick keys in Word and HTML messages in Outlook: NVDA's
much loved browse mode is coming to Microsoft Office applications,
specifically Word and Outlook (in case of Outlook, for reading HTML
messages). Those using the next snapshot series will be able to take this on
a test drive soon, according to Mick (and don't use snapshots (especially
next) unless if you are really curious about testing bleeding-edge alpha
code).

* Case-sensitive find in browse mode: This feature, authored by the
author of this message, will let you search contents of a browse mode
document and tell NVDA to honor case sensitivity.

Some ideas floating around:

* QWERTY input on braille displays equipped with QWERTY keyboards:
This means you can type text and perform NVDA commands using your braille
display's QWERTY keyboards (this will benefit our braille user friends
including those using products such as BrailleNote QT, Braille Sense QWERTY
models and others; work is under way for certain products by a developer in
Europe).

* Support for EuroBraille: A user in Spain is coordinating this
feature.

Thanks. Enjoy NVDA 2014.4 (and to my friends in America, enjoy your turkey
dinner).

Cheers,

Joseph
