[AI] Smartphone thumb skills altering our brains: Study
Smartphone thumb skills altering our brains: Study London, Dec 24 (IANS) Frequent chatting with friends over touchscreen smartphones can actually be brain altering, says a new research. According to Indian-origin scientist Arko Ghosh from University of Zurich, Switzerland, more touchscreen use in the recent past has translated directly into greater brain activity when the thumbs and other fingertips are touched. The news might not be so good, Ghosh and his colleagues say, noting the evidence linking excessive phone use with motor dysfunctions and pain. I was really surprised by the scale of the changes introduced by the use of smartphones. I was also struck by how much of the inter-individual variations in the fingertip-associated brain signals could be simply explained by evaluating the smartphone logs, said Ghosh, also working with ETH Zurich in Switzerland. It all started when Ghosh and his colleagues realised that people's obsession with smartphones could be a grand opportunity to explore the everyday plasticity of the human brain. To link digital footprints to brain activity, Ghosh and his team used electroencephalography (EEG) to record the brain response to mechanical touch on the thumb, index and middle fingertips of touchscreen phone users in comparison to people who still have not given up their old-school mobile phones. They found that the electrical activity in the brains of smartphone users was enhanced when all three fingertips were touched. In fact, the amount of activity in the cortex of the brain associated with the thumb and index fingertips was directly proportional to the intensity of phone use, as quantified by built-in battery logs. The results suggest that repetitive movements over the smooth touchscreen surface reshape sensory processing from the hand, with daily updates in the brain's representation of the fingertips. We propose that cortical sensory processing in the contemporary brain is continuously shaped by personal digital technology, Ghosh said. What exactly this influence of digital technology means for us in other areas of our lives is a question for another day, said the authors in a report appeared in the Cell Press journal Current Biology. Re: [AI] [Press Information Bureau] guidelines for issue of an excise duty concession certificate on purchase of cars by the physically handicapped
I am surprised at the language used in this press release. The word Physically handicapped has been extensively used. Even the original circular of the Ministry of Heavy Industries doesn't use this language. Pls see the blog entry at link below that explains the process to avail the concession certificate: http://subhashvashishth.blogspot.in/2012/05/how-to-avail-road-tax-exemption-for.html The concession is only available for persons with orthopedic impairment since the vehicle has to be adapted to suit their disability or it is a special vehicle. This is also applicable to the institutional vehicles meant for use by persons with physical disabilities (which may have ramps/ special lift systems etc installed by the manufacturer (not added later on). May be with the advent of technology, if some vehicle is launched that can be driven by persons with visual impairments, we might press for similar concessions (smile)! [AI] Proud of you, Rahul! Seven students unite for autism awareness
Here we have Rahul Bajaj from Nagpur, who has taken an initiative to spread awareness about Autism. Another step of yours Rahul, which becomes inspiration for all of us! Title: Seven students unite for autism awareness Source: http://m.timesofindia.com/city/nagpur/Seven-students-unite-for-autism-awareness/articleshow/45622695.cms Article Text: NAGPUR: While autism is defined as a developmental disability, the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995 does not recognize it so. As a result, it does not figure in the list of disabilities for most social security schemes and government policies for the welfare of the disabled. A group of seven students from the city took up the cause of those suffering from autism. As part of participating in the Harvard US-India initiative (HUII) conference to be held in January, an initiative called 'Bridging the Gap' that seeks to remove social taboos and popular myths about autism was started. Rahul Bajaj, Abhishek Naik, Sanya Deshmukh, Kasturi Thengdi, Sanskriti Babhulkar, Pushkar Godbole and Siddhant Bhosale would be presenting the work they have done under the project at the conference. It would be difficult to find any disability which is as widely misunderstood or as widely prevalent amongst young children and adults across India as autism. Some people believe that autistic kids are only naughtier or difficult to handle, while others believe that they are exceptional geniuses like an Einstien or a Newton, said law student Rahul explaining the reason to choose to work for autistic children for the social impact challenge of HUII. The first and most important task that the group undertook was engaging in dialogues with mainstream education institutions. Our objective is to make them understand that with the right amount of training and support, people with autism can compete on a footing of equality with their able-bodied counterparts. However, most schools feel these differently-abled kids must have their special schools, which is not true. We are acting as a connecting link between institutions and autism experts to fill knowledge gaps and share best practices, informed Pushkar, an engineering student. The group also involved some of the special schools in an attempt to figure out the specific challenges they are facing. Parents of autistic children, autism experts and special educators were all included in the process of ensuring that the skills of autistic people are fully tapped and they get a more socially active life. Social media platforms and other resources have also been utilized for this. The ultimate aim is to enable kids with autism grow up into independent adults. Their biggest limitation is in terms of social interactions. So if they are isolated during school, the awkwardness will never go away. It was this thought that made us start interactions between 'normal' schools and special schools, sensitizing teachers as well as kids, said medical student Sanskriti. Though the initiative began for a competition, the group plans on continuing what they have started. In fact, we wish for people to support the cause. The help can be in any form from spreading awareness to providing emotional and other support systems. We are even inviting people through our social networking pages to join the cause and pledge at least four hours a month for it, said CA student Abhishek Naik. -- Amar Jain. Issues that concern parents of special children as well as disabled adults - both voting populations - hardly featured on any political party's manifesto, campaign rally or speech. Only the BJP mentioned implementing the 3 per cent job reservation for the disabled on its manifesto, but every party had stayed silent on inclusive education for special children. According to Jharkhand Education Project Council, only 66.68 per cent children between the ages of six and 14 years with special needs have been enrolled in Jharkhand's government and private schools. Only 600 government teachers have been given basic orientation on inclusive education with stress on special children's needs. The situation is no better in private schools, as Circular 45 of CBSE where certain assistance for children with disabilities is enshrined, is not followed. As far as adults with disabilities go, the state promises 3 per cent job reservations on paper but can't guarantee this on the ground. The state's apathy towards the disabled can be gauged from the fact that the post of disability commissioner has been lying vacant since a year, ever since Satish Chandra's retirement. Recently, speaking to The Telegraph, Chandra had said: I had requested a few political parties to include inclusive education and reservation for the disabled in their manifestos. Most children with disabilities remain out of school, their parents don't get the Rs 400 monthly allowance meant for them. [AI] NVDA slows down while working with MS Office 13 and crashes with Google Input Tool as used along with word, how to fix it?
hello all, I am experiencing a huge trouble while working with MS office 13 with NVDA, especially while working with MS Word. NVDA slows down and makes to wait for more than 5 seconds for announcing the typed letters and words. By slowing down I don't mean the speed, but the working of NVDA application. More adversely, NVDA crashes completely while typing in MS word using the Google Input Tool which is helpful for transliterated typing of many languages. It also makes the MS word to crash too. The unsaved matters get lost irrecoverably very often. even when Word recovery works, it eats away a lot of time while working. I concluded NVDA is the most probable reason for word crashing down since the same problem didn't occur when I work with Jaws demo version. I request your support to resolve this problem. Is there any possibility to resolve this problem for now? Or can any of you report it to NVDA people? Or how can I report it to NVDA myself? are there people involved in the development of NVDA in India who can understand the working problems of NVDA with Indian languages? request your help. thank you. -- THE OPPOSITE OF LOVE IS NOT HATRED, BUT INDIFFERENCE MURUGANANDAN.K Ph.D Scholar, Department of English, Pondicherry University, puducherry-14 mobile:+919787871008. [AI] how to scan and save pages as images in Kurzweil without recognition enabled?
hello all, there's an option in Kurzweil to scan pages only as images without recognizing them. it is available in the settings menu scan settings scan mode. there are three options: scan and recognize, image scanning only and recognize image files. of these, the second option (image scanning only) does not work. I am able to scan pages in this mode, but the scanned images are not shown/displayed/saved. Is there any way to save pages in this mode without recognizing them? I have enabled the keep images option in the general settings. Could any of you help? thank you. -- THE OPPOSITE OF LOVE IS NOT HATRED, BUT INDIFFERENCE MURUGANANDAN.K Ph.D Scholar, Department of English, Pondicherry University, puducherry-14 mobile:+919787871008. Re: [AI] how to scan and save pages as images in Kurzweil without recognition enabled?
You should be able to find the scanned images in the folder named Images in the Kurzweil folders list. Hope that helps.
