 Hi George

You can download TheQube from here:
 http://theqube.oire.org/

It is a commandline client which is very convenient to use. In other words,
it is not displayed as a separate window on the computer, but can be
accessed from wherever you are on the computer using specific keystrokes.
 TheQube is a free client.

Another commandline Twitter client that is popular among the blind is
Chicken Nugget. This is very similar to TheQube as regards the shortcut
 keys
used, and was developed by the same guy who pioneered the concept of
commandline Twitter clients for the blind with the introduction of Qwitter,
 which is now obsolete.
 Chicken Nugget costs $15.

Try TheQube to begin with. If it does not work on your computer for some
 reason, then explore Chicken Nugget.

 Hope this helps.

[AI] She got into IIM with 10% vision, little prep By Isha Jain

2015-08-08 Thread avinash shahi
Great accomplishment indeed. Any comment on her understanding about
visual impairment as quoted in the piece? Many theorists and scholars
have convincingly maintained that the experience is the most powerful
reality which determines one's outlook in the life. I think there is
an urgent need for the experts-disability counsellors to cater to the
suddenly transformed people who become disabled in their teen/youth
age.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/lucknow/She-got-into-IIM-with-10-vision-little-prep/articleshow/48397554.cms?utm_source=facebook.comutm_medium=referralutm_campaign=TOI

LUCKNOW: Being the youngest person in her batch and having received
calls from all but two IIMs is a remarkable achievement by any
standard for a 19-year-old. But this achievement by Jaipur girl and
IIM-Lucknow fresher Paridhi Varma becomes particularly special when
one considers the fact that she has lost 90% vision to macular
degeneration.

Paridhi, who has enrolled in the PG programme in management at the
premier institute, will be staying away from parents for the first
time in her life. Initially, I was not able to manage because
preparations involved a lot of reading. At home, dad read out lessons
for me. There was a time when I thought of quitting, but then my
seniors came forward and volunteered to help me overcome my
challenges, says Paridhi, adding, I have a disability, but I focus
only on my abilities.

The challenge of living alone became worse when she had a ligament
tear in the very first month at IIM-L. I slipped due to poor vision.
I have problems in walking in the campus at night. In hostel, I manage
everything on my own as my senses are really sharp,'' she says.

Born in Jabalpur, Paridhi spent the formative years of her life in
Delhi. She moved to Dehradun in class VI when her parents, father
Satendra and mother Krishna Prabha Varma, both working in defence
ministry, were transferred. She joined class XI in a private school in
Jaipur, the city from where she completed her graduation.

A BBA graduate from ICG, Jaipur, and a diploma holder in mass
communication and video production, Paridhi aspired for civil services
till she met a friend who suggested that she prepare for CAT. I took
it lightly and just studied for two and a half months for the exam.
The CAT results were a surprise for me, says Paridhi, who is
passionate about radio jockeying and plans to pursue it after
completing MBA. She says, RJing is all about talking which I can do
the whole day. No one would come to know that I am
visually-impaired.''

The diagnosis of her eye ailment was delayed. In school, her academic
performance deteriorated to an extent that she failed her class V
final examinations. My parents first thought I was becoming dumb with
each passing year because I don't study. They felt I am not focussing
on my studies. But the problem was that I couldn't read the blackboard
even when I sat in the first row, says Paridhi.

The wake-up call for her parents came only when colours went into her
eyes during Holi. We consulted a local doctor who offered me glasses,
which obviously were of no use. My vision was getting blurred. And
then I was taken to Shankar Netrayalaya where my disease was
diagnosed. By the time I came to class IX, I was put under the
visually-impaired category, recalls Paridhi.

In class X, she scored 8.2 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).
Though she wanted to study science in class XI, her disability didn't
permit her to do so. There are so many diagrams and equations. I can
neither draw nor dictate diagrams to the writer. Calculations too are
a problem. Hence, I had no option but to study commerce, says
Paridhi, who joined IIM-L on June 1 and took 15 days of remedial
classes.

Writers, she says, can't always be trusted. In class 10, my scribe
wrote COBRA instead of COPRA (Consumer Protection Act) in my economics
exam, she says. At IIM-L too, she has been given a writer. Errors
committed by the scribe would definitely make my academics suffer,
says Paridhi.

Paridhi's closest senior Rupika who helped her in mid-term
examinations says, She (Paridhi) is a very bubbly, fun-loving girl.
She loves to talk and is fond of music. Besides, she loves nail art.
While helping her with economics, I found her really bright and
enthusiastic. She has a knack for building mental maps for concepts
introduced to her. This is what helps her memorize things for a long
time.

This is what helps her memorize things for a long
 time.

Hi All,

I am looking for a clarity, requesting your help please.
If a PWD working in a Gov/PSU organization (let say X) gets a better
job oppertunity in another PSU/Gov organization (let say Y), then
will he/she be allowed to switch from X to Y under PWD reservation?
Or is there any legal obligation behind same, as he/she already
working under PWD reservation in organization X.

 Hi Karan,

I use HDFC bank's website regularly.
 1. If using jaws, turn off the option to filter conexecutive links.
For all graphical links, route the jaws cursor to the pc cursor and
double cleck. You can use a similar procedure for NVDA where you route
the focus to the current position in the virtual buffer.
 2. Using firefox is a shade easier since you can hit enter on
 non-graphical
 links.
 3. Be careful with the menus. When using the funds transfer options,
when you hit on the funds transfer link, the relevant options appear
below the funds transfer link in a list.
 4. The balance in the financial summary appears in a single line and
 not
 in
 a
separate table as it used to so read the page carefully.
 5. Let me know if you are having issues with any specific part of the

Re: [AI] TISS Mumbai: Students get a feel of difficulties physically challenged face every day

2015-08-08 Thread Hardik Sinh
Such blindfolded simulation has negative effects on perception of the
visually impaired life that actually sensitizing people. Negative heading
to the article by the Indian Express author itself is defeating the purpose
of such workshop. Please read below pasted article on this type of
awareness workshops.
New Research: Blindness Simulation Activities May Do More Harm than Good

New research findings from the University of Colorado indicate that
blindness simulations – intended to be bridge-builders resulting in greater
compassion and understanding – can sometimes harm rather than help.
According to the authors, simulation activities, and blindness simulations
in particular, highlight the initial challenges of becoming disabled and
thus decrease the perceived adaptability of being disabled and reduce the
judged capabilities of disabled people.

The lead author is Arielle Silverman, now a postdoctoral fellow at the
University of Washington in Seattle, who is blind and has experienced a
variety of reactions from the public, related to people's familiarity (or
not) with blindness and the capabilities of blind persons.
From Social Psychological and Personality Science

This thought-provoking research, entitled Stumbling in Their Shoes:
Disability Simulations Reduce Judged Capabilities of Disabled People, has
been published online ahead of print in the November 21, 2014 edition of
Social Psychological and Personality Science (SSPS). SPPS publishes short
reports of research studies that contribute to an understanding of critical
issues in social and personality psychology, written to be accessible to a
wide range of audiences. The authors are Arielle M. Silverman, Jason D.
Gwinn, and Leaf Van Boven, from the University of Washington, Seattle and
the University of Colorado, Boulder.
About the Research

Excerpted from How to worsen attitudes toward blindness - let people give
it a try, via Science Codex:

A common claim about getting people to understand one another … is to walk
a mile in their shoes. But using simulation to walk in the shoes of a
person who is blind – such as wearing a blindfold while performing everyday
tasks – has negative effects on people's perceptions of the visually
impaired, according to a new paper.

When people think about what it would be like to be blind, they take from
their own brief and relatively superficial experience and imagine it would
be really, really terrible and that they wouldn't be able to function
well, said Arielle Silverman, a postdoctoral researcher at the University
of Washington in Seattle, who is lead author of the paper and blind.

In one part of the study, after simulating blindness by having their eyes
covered, participants believed people who are blind are less capable of
work and independent living than did participants who simulated other
impairments like amputation, or had no impairment.

In another part of the study, participants who were blindfolded said they
would be less capable if they personally became blind and slower to adjust
to their new world compared with study participants who weren't blindfolded.

There also are variations on blindness simulations – activities that are
implemented with good intentions but that can exploit blindness, said
Silverman. These include trust walks, typically used as a group bonding
exercise, and blind cafés, where diners are blindfolded and dine in the
dark.

Another important consideration when it comes to evaluating the
effectiveness of simulations is the fact that the built world and social
environments are not designed for people with disabilities.

A lot of the disability that I experience has nothing to do with not being
able to see, said Silverman. Instead, it's because I can't access
something like a poorly designed website, for example. So if there's a way
for simulations to capture how much difficulty is caused by the social
environment and the built world, this could improve attitudes and help
people understand that those with disabilities are just as competent as
they are.
What are Blindness Simulation Activities?

As a longtime professional in the field of adult low vision and vision
rehabilitation, I have participated in countless blindness simulation
activities.
University-Based Training Programs

Some have been education-based and served as highly effective learning
tools for students in my Master's and Certificate Programs in Vision
Rehabilitation Therapy at Salus University. Our students learned to perform
– and teach – a variety of daily living skills, including complex meal
preparation, under the blindfold in structured laboratory settings.

Hi sir,
Can say following from my experiences.
1. Though knowing math ML can be advantageous but practically getting
the content in right format especially at the right time becomes a
challenge. Therefore, for subjects which contain equations, tables and
graphs, making notes in class and studying with friends/ professors is
a practical solution.
2. Since at IIMs most of the subjects are based on articals from
various journals and real life case studies, any central repository of
textbooks wouldn't be much helpful. However, the journals and cases
can easily be obtained in soft copies on case to case bases.
3. As far as I know, all the professors at IIMs are assisted by
teaching associats. They can be really helpful for writing quizzes/
exams. We used to take an associat from finance area if the exam used
to be of a finance subject. Again, alternative evaluations like vivas
are also possible and almost all of us who have studied at IIMs, have
opted for them in few subjects.
4. The training can be possible through Skype however I am not much
clear about your question.
Again, as I said the other day, Would urge you to put her in touch
with any one of us i.e. Vishal, Karan, Swathi, Anuj or myself so that
we can guide her.

 Proper keyboard outlay
 Budget = 30-50K

DO please let know any experience you’ve recently went through while

Re: [AI] TIps sought for purchase of lap top

2015-08-08 Thread Bhavya shah
Hi,
I have a 10 inch Netbook with a compact keyboard with limited keys.
However, accessing the more complex keys like PG up/dn and Home/End
using the Fn key is absolutely simple.
Matter of habituating and familiarizing...
Thanks.

 Hi,
Though dell laptops don't have all the keys, yet they can easily be
accessed by using errow keys with function key.
I am using dell and can say, you wouldn' regret buying it.
It is all about getting habitual to the keyboard.
Lenovo doesn't bring thinkpad to market and from experience I can say,
their flex models are a great disaster!

 Hello Techies,

I wish to purchase a lap top with the following configuration at the
least. Which one should I buy I mean brand- Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus?

Reason to ask these questions is because some amazing lap tops of Dell
are not having page down-up and home and end button. These four keys
are very useful while using JAWs, therefore please guide.

 Configuration:

 Intel core processor 5-7
Ram memory 4-8 (Preference to 8)
Memory 500 minimum (Not a huge priority due to a hard disk)
 Proper keyboard outlay
 Budget = 30-50K

DO please let know any experience you’ve recently went through while
 buying the machine.

 Thank you
