Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur have
developed technologies that will enable people with disabilities enjoy
the digital world, says Indrani Roy.

Communication barrier affects people with disabilities the most,”
feels Anupam Basu, chairman and head, Center for Educational
Technology and professor, department of computer science and
engineering at IIT-Kharagpur.
A technocrat who feels it is essential to remove the digital obstacles
that dog the path of the physically-challenged, Basu is busy inventing
methods to end digital divide of any sort.
Under his aegis, researchers at the Indian Institute of
Technology-Kharagpur have developed technologies that will enable
people with disabilities enjoy the digital world.
In an informal discussion with rediff.com’s Indrani Roy, Basu talked
about the aims of IIT-Kgp’s Communication Empowerment Laboratory and
explained how as a director of the Kolkata-based Society for Natural
Language Technology Research, he is fine-tuning the technology derived
from IIT-Kgp for practical purposes.
Aims of the Communication Empowerment Lab
The CEL was founded with the objective of developing technology that
will meet the communication and educational needs of the
differently-abled.
CEL is dedicated to develop technology to
• enable education and communication of the visually impaired with the
help of The Sparsha Transliteration System
• enable education and communication of children with neuro-motor
disorders (such as cerebral palsy) and speech impairment through tools
like Sanyog and Akashvani
IIT Kharagpur

On the collaboration between IIT-Kgp and Society for Natural Language
Technology Research
Though the research on Sparsha, Sanyog etc took place at IIT-Kgp, the
task of improving and refining the systems that were born in the Kgp
lab was taken up by SNLTR.
“IIT-Kgp is the best place for research and for running pilots,” Basu
told rediff.com,  “But for routine improvements and refinements, one
has to bank on SNLTR.”
The informal transfer of technology from IIT-Kgp to SNLTR is in the
process and the formalities are expected to be over soon, he informed.
The Sparsha Transliteration System
Developed by CEL, this system can accept several Indian language texts
(such as Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu, Oriya, Kannada,
Manipuri) as input and convert it into Braille.
“The software can take any Unicode-compliant Indian language text as
input and can convert it to Braille and thus facilitates the
production of Braille textbooks,” Basu told rediff.com at the SNLTR
office in Rajarhat on Monday.
Sparsha can support almost all commonly used Braille printers or
embossers to take out the hard copy in Braille.
Sparsha integrates regular keyboards with audio feedback to enable
sightless people type in through regular personal computers.
At present, it is also being integrated with a text-to-speech system
to provide screen reading and file reading facility.

Specialised keyboards
IIT-Kgp and SNLTR have jointly developed the Baishakhi keyboard using
which one can type in Bengali.
Moreover, it can be used for typing in Assamese, Oriya and Manipuri
languages as well.
SNLTR and IIT-Kgp have also developed a speech-enabled keyboard that
can aid the visually impaired students to write their examinations
without writers.
“While typing on these keyboards, the students can listen to what they
are writing through headphones, thus getting a chance to rectify and
edit,” Basu told

Basu is currently associated with a project to develop a light-weight
web browser.
Sponsored by ministry of communication and information technology,
Government of India, and IIT Kharagpur, the browser with special
features can be easily accessible by the visually impaired people.
Sanyog
This is a communication device (presently based on personal computers)
developed by IIT-Kgp and SNLTR with the help of which specially-abled
children can get to interact.
“A large number of children in India suffer from cerebral palsy.
Though cognitively capable, they are deprived of access to the modern
tools of communication,” Basu told rediff.com.
“They cannot use the traditional modes of communication (namely spoken
and written languages) because of their physical disability,” he
added.
Sanyog allows selection of icons (communicating concepts) through
special indigenous access devices instead of mouse (most of these
children cannot use the mouse

[AI] storytelling, may intrest some of you!!

2015-09-26 Thread Mahendra Galani

Now playing: Bedtime stories revamped with a digital twist

The ancient narrative form of storytelling, once a bedtime
experience, has now got a digital spin. (Representative photo)

Kalam could not finish his dream book
PUNE: On July 27, when former President APJ Abdul Kalam passed away
in Shillong, in distant Chennai, the Karadi Tales team uploaded the
audio version of his popular book 'Wings on Fire'. A nation grieving
the death one of its favourite leaders readily downloaded the book.

Two months on, after watching the biographical thriller Everest, a
Mumbai professional couldn't shake off the 3D experience and started
reading up on the 1996 disaster on the Internet and found a
downloadable audio book on it. Not much of a book lover, he saved the
audio file on his pen drive and now plays it while maneuvering his
way through the crawling Mumbai traffic. "I wouldn't have picked up a
fat book to read, but I wanted to know more," the 30-year-old
marketing professional says.

The ancient narrative form of storytelling, once a bedtime
experience, has now got a digital spin. "What makes a good story
doesn't change. Modern tools have helped us make the process more
interesting and interactive. From paintings on the wall to tablets,
the challenge lies in how to make a story interesting and
interactive," says Manas Mohan, CEO of Publishing, Amar Chitra Katha.

It was the charm of storytelling that had Ajay Dasgupta leave his
corporate job in 2013 and start the Kahaani Project in Pune. A
Dialogue in the Dark experience, where visitors are led by blind
guides to navigate a darkened space, had inspired Dasgupta to start a
project of storytelling sessions designed for the visually impaired.
Now, Kahaani crowd sources with volunteers, records stories and
uploads them on the website. Dasgupta likes to call it a 'YouTube for
stories.' "The dominant form of narrative is the visual one. Reading
is important but so is listening. Storytelling should be a
multi-sensory experience," he says.

Apart from holding storytelling workshops with Door Step School,
Kahaani Project will now set up kiosks across the city where anyone
can stop and listen to a story.

If these initiatives revolve around the oral form of storytelling,
there are others that aim at initiating children into the world of
books. The Chennai-based Book Lovers' Program for Schools (BLPS) -
backed by two IITians - Amrutash Misra and Naresh Ramamurthy -
believes in making the storytelling experience live and communal and
use it as a tool to encourage children to read more. "Half the goal
is achieved if the right book is picked," says Misra. He explains
that embellishing the narration doesn't always help. "With too much
prop, children might end up saying I don't want to read the book or
that the book is too boring." Apart from recommending a reading list,
training teachers, BLPS also holds activities like group reading.

Misra says the internet has opened up multiple doors to popularize
and customize storytelling. The IITian duo recently released a
storybook app, Storyhood, which is inspired by the popular android
app Farfaria. This app features ebooks, fairy tales and bedtime
stories; short stories and longer reads and loads of classic and
modern stories for parents and children to read together.

Mohan says that though the concept of audio books is hardly new, its
market has got a new lease of life with tablets, computers and
smartphones. "In the last 30 years, the percentage of book buyers has
not increased. The numbers look big because of the population growth.
Also, the hegemony of the large brands has ended with more number and
different formats of books being published," he says.

The audio book sales are predictably picking up. E-commerce major
Flipkart says the audio books market is growing steadily, but a lot
depends on digital rights management and how policies and structures
are built around it to avoid plagiarism, says a Flipkart
spokesperson. "Audio books have a very niche set of audience and we
foresee a lot of potential," he adds, pointing out how the demand for
non-fiction and

[AI] A start-up that teaches empathy

2015-09-26 Thread Mahendra Galani

A start-up that teaches empathy
[]

Imagine being in a small room that is pitch dark. Your only aid being
a voice which will guide you in carrying out tasks that range from
drawing a rainbow to making a cup of tea. Seems unbelievable? Not
yet. What will makes it extraordinary is that the person guiding you
will be a visually impaired person. These activities are part of a
business workshop conducted by MICA-incubated start-up Dialogue
Makers. The activities help strengthen coherence, communication and
effectiveness among participants from corporates. What is more
important is that it also helps them get a taste of the world that a
visually impaired person lives in, helping them to understand the
challenges faced by the differently abled.

Dialogue Makers was set up seven months ago in partnership with
social enterprise Dialogue in the Dark - a 25-year-old global
experiential training firm. The aim is not to provide respectable
employment opportunities to the visually challenged and achieve
societal inclusion of society's 'abled' members. "We train visually
challenged people to conduct the workshop in the dark. The training
sessions are held for businesspersons, corporate employees and others
as well to boost team spirit and communication. We have eight such trainers.

When the participants finish the workshop, they not only learn
lessons in real-life and corporate world, they also become empathetic
towards visually challenged," said Mit Somaiya, founder and CEO of
Dialogue Makers. He adds, "Participants face temporary loss of the
dominant sense - vision -- triggering a dramatic slowdown in their
routine. The workshop tests their limits. They have to combine
emotional intelligence, social skills and sensory abilities to
achieve their task. Experiences without visual cues can help you
change the way you communicate and form team processes.

The development of strategies to solve a problem or task in the dark
strengthens a team's coherence, communication and effectiveness. It
changes the way a person perceives the world." Somaiya said that the
activities impels a person to trust others, be a good team member,
cooperate, learn and follow sensory prompts to complete activities
successfully. Mitul Patel (22), who holds degrees in Bachelor of Arts
and Bachelor in Education, worked at a call centre till last year.

Though he earned well, he was not comfortable with the sympathy he
garnered. "I underwent training with a Mexican tutor who was visiting
the city. I am an instructor with Dialogue Makers. Now, people do not
sympathize but empathize with me. They know that even we can conduct
trainings and workshops," he said, proudly. The firm plans to train
many other visually impaired people and rope them on rotation so that
more such people are employed.

Actually android is not the recommended option if you really care of
accessibility. Believe me lots of hunting required for making android
workable. it invokes frustration at several crutial junctures.
So go for any other platform if you mean to accessibility.

questions regarding mobile phones on Access India Mailing list is
against the rules of posting. There is a dedicated mailing list
exclusively for these kind of quaries. Please refer to the footer of

But previously, on a concessional ticket booked over the counter, we did not
require to mention the name of the escort. The only specified column was:
with/without escort.
No identification, no name etc. So we could have the escort of our choice.
In the present case, if an escort refuses to come along at the last minute and
we have the option to replace him with another, we cannot do this. That must be
made known to the railway officials.

I don't think we can change escort on a concessional ticket.

Hello, Railways does allow changing of names upto 24 hours prior to travel.
So you can easily change your escort by visiting the station master concerned.
