[AI] Group returns Rs 2L as mins fail to show up
Group returns Rs 2L as mins fail to show up Hyderabad TIMES NEWS NETWORK Angry at two ministers for giving a miss to a conference of visually-challenged persons, the All India Confederation of the Blind (AICB) returned a cheque of Rs 2 lakh that was presented to them. The AICB had invited ministers Kadiam Srihari and T Harish Rao to the conference, where a detailed discussion on the welfare schemes for the visuallychallenged was supposed to be held. However, a liaison officer turned up at the meeting instead of the two ministers. AICB general secretary J L Kaul then announced that the confederation would return the money sent through an emissary . “We will not depend on the government for support. If we were to raise money on our own, we will beg from the people. We want the government to look into our problems, not give monetary benefits,“ said Kaul. The three-day conference, which ended on Thursday , witnessed the participation of people from several states.“We had conducted a session on Right to Education that required the presence of people like Kadiam Srihari. But we were left completely in the dark. He could have sent a message across rather than keep hundreds waiting,“ rued P Chokka Rao, general secretary , Development and Welfare Association of the Blind. [AI] congenital cataract,
Umesha, Since you mention congenital cataract, thought of sharing my experience here. My grandmother was suffering from German measels when she was carrying my mom who was born with cataract. When I was born they pretty much suspected that my eyes would be affected as well and indeed I was born with cataract. However, my eight year old son has perfect eye sight. As a teenager, I had developed Glaucoma and was apprehensive about the child's vision being affected by genetic factors. On the recommendation of my ophthalmologist and his gynecologist wife, I did go for genetic counseling in Mumbai. At one point, I almost gave up the idea of parenting, but both doctors were very positive and reassured me that what happened three decades (me being born with cataract) is a very slim occurrence in today's times. Even if the baby is born with cataract, is what I was told, the cataract can be easily removed immediately with no complications or long-term implications. It was suggested that a pediatrician be present to test the baby's eyes at birth. After that, I have been regularly been getting my son's vision tested by my ophthalmologist every time I visit him for a Glaucoma pressure check up. [AI] HC moved by visually challenged couple wanting child, not money
The Madras High Court Bench here on Thursday had an emotional encounter with a visually challenged couple who said that no amount of compensation awarded to them by the State government would equal the joy of seeing the police trace out their three-day-old baby girl lifted from Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) here on January 9, 2006. http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Madurai/hc-moved-by-visually-challenged-couple-wanting-child-not-money/article7768040.ece Moved by the couple’s love for their child, Justices S. Nagamuthu and V.S. Ravi directed Madurai city police to reopen the baby lifting case, which they had closed as untraced, and transfer the investigation to Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department. The CB-CID sleuths were in turn ordered to take earnest steps to trace the girl who would be about 10 years old at present. On enquiry, the couple R. Muthumanickam and M. Mareeswari of Anna Nagar here, told the judges that they came to know of the police having closed their case only after newspapers carried reports of the court having awarded them and 12 other parents a compensation of Rs.3 lakh each since the police could not trace their babies lifted from various government hospitals in the State. The two judges had passed the order on September 22 on a habeas corpus petition (HCP) filed by another woman whose one-day-old baby boy was lifted from the GRH on June 15, 2013. Then, they said: “The court had a Constitutional obligation to take justice to the doorsteps of even those who could not approach it due to poverty, ignorance, illiteracy, want of wherewithal and so on.” Hence, approaching the court now with a separate HCP, the couple said they were still anxious to get reunited with their stolen elder child though they had begotten another girl who was now studying in Class IV in a private school. They also claimed to be running their family with a monthly income of Rs.4,500 earned by Mr. Muthumanickam by serving as a lift operator in a private hospital. Touched by their plight, the judges directed the State government to examine the possibility of paying more than Rs.3 lakh to this couple alone as a special case and hand over the cheque on October 27. They also successfully persuaded Madurai Bench of Madras High Court Bar Association president to accept on behalf of the association the educational, health and other expenses of the couple’s second child. -- Avinash Shahi Doctoral student at Centre for Law and Governance JNU Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] The only Ravindra sangeet I understood by Rakesh Chopra
In the late seventies, All India Radio’s Urdu Service would repeatedly play the song ‘Dil mein tujhe bithake, kar loongi mein band aankhen’ on popular demand. With no television at home and the transistor being the only medium of entertainment, I developed an ear for music. http://www.hindustantimes.com/punjab/the-only-ravindra-sangeet-i-understood/story-PLfsOUsujPTcf7f4RhW0vL.html It was much later that I came to know about the man behind the melody from the film ‘Fakira’ and his colossus contribution to film music. Lyricist and composer Ravindra Jain, who came from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, was born blind and took to music from childhood. After the initial struggle, he found his footing in the Hindi film industry with his soothing compositions. His association with Rajshri Productions gave the film industry some of its best music. Who can forget ‘Geet gata chal o saathi gungunata chal’ in Jaspal Singh’s voice? With ‘Jab deep jale aana’ from ‘Chitchor’, Jain gave enough glimpses of his phenomenal talent. And the title song of ‘Akhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se’ captured the imagination of an entire nation. He launched many new singers as Yesudas and Hemlata became regulars at his recording studios. Under his baton, the talented Yesudas sang some of his best Hindi film songs. With ‘Aaj se pehle aaj se zyada, khushi aajtak nahin mili’ from ‘Chitchor’, ‘Ae mere udaas mann, chal dono kahin door chalen’ from ‘Maan Abimaan’ and ‘O goriya re, tere aane se saj gayi hamri yeh tooti-phooti naav’ from ‘Naiyya’, the singer-composer duo stamped their authority on the Bollywood film scene. It was mutual admiration at work, as the music director once remarked that were he ever to get his sight, he would like to see Yesudas first. Jain also scored music for regional films, including ‘Chadi Jawani Buddhe Nu’ in Punjabi. His compositions for the Bhojpuri film ‘Nadiya Ke Paar’, which set a record of sorts in the UP-Bihar belt, were top-drawer stuff. Raj Kapoor’s ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’ in 1985 brought the Padma Shri composer his only Filmfare Award. And the number ‘Sun sahiba sun, pyar ki dhun’ from that film became the virtual national anthem that year. Ramanand Sagar brought him on board for his mythological TV serials ‘Ramayana’ and ‘Shri Krishna’, where the singer in him came into full play. His composition ‘Purvaiyaa leke chali meri naiyya, jane kahan re’ sung by Shailendra Singh and Lata Mangeshkar in the lesser-known movie ‘Do Jasoos’ gives me goose pimples to this day. The way he used maverick Kishore Kumar’s voice to bring out different moods in the songs ‘Ghoonghru ki tarah bajta hi raha hoon main’ and ‘Le jayenge, le jayenge, dilwale dulhaniya le jayenge’ in ‘Chor Machaye Shor’ shows a genius at work. If one still doubts the greatness of Jain, who in the 1970s and 1980s held his own among such stalwarts as Laxmikant-Pyarelal, RD Burman and Rajesh Roshan, just two compositions from ‘Saudagar’ — ‘Sajna hai mujhe sajna ke liye’ and ‘Tera mera saath rahe’ — will clinch it for him. After his passing away last week, as I listen to Mahendra Kapoor sing ‘Chal chala chal, Fakira chal chala chal’, I admit unabashedly that his is the only Ravindra sangeet I understood. I marvel at his immense body of work and that too without the faculty of sight! But, then maybe he could see music. If only he had sight, what he would have made of music and what music would have made of him can only be conjectured. rakesh.cho...@hindustantimes.com -- Avinash Shahi Doctoral student at Centre for Law and Governance JNU Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. [AI] Group returns Rs 2 lakh as ministers fail to show up
Interesting development indeed. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/hyderabad/Group-returns-Rs-2-lakh-as-ministers-fail-to-show-up/articleshow/49399639.cms HYDERABAD: Angry at two ministers for giving a miss to a conference of visually-challenged persons, the All India Confederation of the Blind (AICB) returned a cheque of Rs 2 lakh that was presented to them. The AICB had invited ministers Kadiam Srihari and T Harish Rao to the conference, where a detailed discussion on the welfare schemes for the visuallychallenged was supposed to be held. However, a liaison officer turned up at the meeting instead of the two ministers. AICB general secretary JL Kaul then announced that the confederation would return the money sent through an emissary. "We will not depend on the government for support. If we were to raise money on our own, we will beg from the people. We want the government to look into our problems, not give monetary benefits," said Kaul. The three-day conference, which ended on Thursday, witnessed the participation of people from several states."We had conducted a session on Right to Education that required the presence of people like Kadiam Srihari. But we were left completely in the dark. He could have sent a message across rather than keep hundreds waiting," rued P Chokka Rao, general secretary, Development and Welfare Association of the Blind. [AI] Mute Indian girl stuck in Pakistan 'identifies family'
A mute and deaf Indian girl who has been stuck in Pakistan for more than a decade because she cannot remember where she came from may have finally identified her family, the charity looking after her said Thursday. The new ray of hope for the woman known only as Geeta, believed to be in her early 20s, came after the Indian High Commission in Islamabad sent her a photograph of a family, whom she said she recognised. The Edhi Foundation, Pakistan's largest charity who has been caring for Geeta since she was found 13 years ago, said it was trying to arrange a Skype video call with the family, reported to be based somewhere in India's Bihar province, to confirm their relationship. "The Indian high commissioner has lately sent a family photo to us and Geeta has recognised the family," Anwer Kazmi, a senior official at the foundation, told AFP. "We hope she will confirm the family identification during the Skype chat through sign language," Kazmi said. Kazmi said Bilqees Edhi, wife of Edhi Foundation founder Abdul Satter Edhi, hoped to accompany Geeta along with several other members of the Edhi family to India before the end of October. "We are expecting to get visas for all very soon and hope that on October 26 Geeta would fly back home," he said Geeta was 11 or 12 when she was found by police alone and disorientated with no identity papers on a train that had crossed the border from India into the eastern city of Lahore. She was believed to have strayed into Pakistani territory by mistake, but could not remember or explain exactly where she was from. Unable to identify her or her family, Pakistani police handed her over to the Edhi Foundation. She now lives in one of the foundation's shelters in Karachi. Even the name "Geeta" was given to her by Edhi staff. The Indian government confirmed Geeta would return and said DNA tests would be used to confirm her relation to the family. "If DNA testing verifies that they are indeed her parents, then she will be handed over to them," Vikas Swarup, India's foreign ministry spokesman, told a press conference in New Delhi. "Our bringing her back does not depend on whether or not we discover her parents. She is a daughter of India... we will be bringing her back very, very shortly," Swarup said, without specifying a date. In August the Indian government pledged to bring Geeta home, prompted by fresh media coverage of a smash hit Bollywood film. "Bajrangi Bhaijaan", featuring Indian superstars Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor, tells the mirror image of Geeta's story: a mute young Pakistani woman trapped in India. The Edhi foundation has made repeated attempts to trace Geeta's family, but with no success.
