yes, you are absolutely right. if one decides to grab the useful
resources, nothing is difficult and everything is manageable. i
personally really been enjoying the eyes free group, though sometimes
useless topics do come and most of the times i surely get to learn and

i have subscribed via this method long ago so i guess it should work
even now. if not, then do let me know.
thanks and see you there with your informative mails as like on eyes free group,

[AI] Disabled scholar may realise JNU dream

2015-11-28 Thread avinash shahi
NEW DELHI: When Akshansh Gupta, a 32-year-old research scholar with
95% disability due to cerebral palsy, was awarded PhD on 'Brain
Computer Interface' from JNU, his only wish was to work in the
university. A week later, his dream may come true. According to the
Jawaharlal Nehru University authorities, the university is trying to
create a research position for him so that he can stay on campus.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/Disabled-scholar-may-realise-JNU-dream/articleshow/49954178.cms
Speaking to TOI, Gupta said that his experience at the univeristy has
been "amazing, and people here are mature and sensitive to each
others' feelings".

"I am on my own at my hostel and no one at the university has ever
made me feel like I have a disability. In fact, many of my friends
come to me with their problems. The teachers and my friends have been
very helpful. The atmosphere here is such that anyone would like to
stay here, but that can be possible only if I manage to get a job
here," he said.

Univeristy officials felt that being a teacher immediately maybe not
possible for Akshansh as he has speech issues, but authorities agreed
that he can work as a researcher. "We are trying to find him a job as
a researcher. He has been a good student. Because of his disability,
he cannot speak fluently, but I can understand him as he visits me
very often and we interact," said Sudhir Kumar Sopory,
vice-chancellor.

Meanwhile, taking its inclusive policy and barrier-free environment a
step further, the university in its last academic and executive
council meeting decided to give a grace of three months to
visually-disabled students for submission of thesis.

"Visually-disabled students need more time to complete their thesis.
Therefore, the university has decided that they should be given some
additional time," said Sopory. The university has also completed works
like lifts and barrier-free pathways within the campus.

"Just the gesture that the university is trying to find a place for
me in itself is heartening. The vice-chancellor has always been very
helpful," said Gupta.

Re: [AI] e-mail lists for Mac OS X accessibility

2015-11-28 Thread Bhavya shah
Hi,

Aravind Sir,
I searched for 'voice over easy' on Google and the first and most
relevant search result that came up was http://www.voiceover-easy.net/
However, it does not seem to have any material for VoiceOver on Mac OS
X, simply iOS. Therefore, this website seems out of scope of my
present requirements. All the same, I will refer to this if I ever
happen to try iOS in the future, so thanks for that again.

Mukesh Sir,
Traffic is not of matter to me, because I can manage my e-mails and
tolerate most of the unimportant chatter well enough. :) smiles
Anyways, I am sure that the Eyes Free Google Group would be hard to
leave behind, when it comes to traffic. :D grin
On a serious note, could you provide subscription information for this
Mac Visionary list? I would be interested to join.

Thanks.

[AI] new handicap quota in trains

2015-11-28 Thread sazid shaik
Dear list,

As per extant instructions, handicapped quota of 2 berths in sleeper
class (one lower and one middle) is earmarked for physically
handicapped persons travelling on concession.

There are two types of handicapped persons who can book berth under
this quota; one for whom it is compulsory to travel along with escort
and the second for whom it is optional. Recently instances were
brought to the notice of this office where the handicapped persons for
whom it is optional to take an escort were not allowed to book single
berth against this quota by some Railways since the second berth will
go vacant as middle berth cannot be allotted to physically handicapped
persons. This issue has now been examined by the Ministry of Railways
and further rationalization has been done to ensure optimum allotment
and utilization of handicapped quota. The revised decisions taken are
given as under : -

(i) There will be two types of handicapped quota of two berths each
(one lower and one middle) in the same cabin; one for physically
handicapped persons who can utilize concession only when accompanied
by an escort and the second for those handicapped persons for whom it
is optional to take an escort with them.

(ii) As for the former category it is compulsory to be accompanied by
an escort, these berths can be booked by such category of handicapped
persons booking tickets on concession on first come first serve basis.

(iii) For the later, where it is optional to be accompanied by an
escort, if the first handicapped person intends to book berth along
with escort, both the berths will be booked. However if the first
handicapped person books without escort, the second berth will not be
booked under handicapped quota and will be released to RAC/waitlisted
passengers at the time of preparation of reservation charts.

(iv) Further, at the time of preparation of reservation charts, the
unutilized lower berths under this quota can be released to physically
handicapped passenger (of either category who were kept in general
waiting list due to exhaustion of their quota), single senior citizen
travelling alone on priority and thereafter to waitlisted passengers
as per priority. In case a single berth i.e. middle berth is left
vacant in this quota of second category it will be released to
RAC/waitlisted passengers.

(v) It has also been decided that whenever a physically handicapped
person books ticket on concession and if no berth is available in
handicapped quota, the system will automatically try to allot the
lower berth to him/her and middle berth to escort subject to
availability of same at the time of booking.

These new provisions will be effective by 22nd December, 2015.

regards,
sazid

Hi Raju,

Indeed, I did try the KNFB Reader on that card without success. I am running it
on an iPhone 5.

Subject: [AI] Using an alternative OCR with the Lex camera

Hi all,

In the event that some of you have bought the Lex system from VisionAid (the
local dealer is Sparsh), you can use DocuScan Plus from Serotek with the
camera
that comes with the Lex system. Hats off to VisionAid for not locking its
hardware.
The advantage of DSP is that you can use both a flatbed scanner and a camera
with it. Yes, I had to dust off my Plustek Opticbook 3600 scanner the other
day.
I had a business card to scan. I tried it with the Lex camera and was told
no
text found. This is where I goofed. I formulated the premise that there was
an
issue with the camera focus so it was time for the old flatbed. I had to use
compatibility mode to update the drivers for the Plustek Opticbook 3600 on
windows 10. Once that was done, I realized that I did not have any OCR
program
to use it with. My copy of Fine Reader was long expired and I do not own
anything else. I have had my eye on DocuScan Plus for a while so gave it a
spin.
No go, still no text. I saw the Lex camera listed in the image source and
tried
it. Bingo, I got text. The experience is not as smooth as with the Lex
software
but it works.

As for the business card, I had to use sighted assistance. The card is of an
architect and she has used some fancy fonts. Time to file bug reports with
VisionAid and perhaps Serotek though I doubt they can do much since the
problem
is with the OCR component.
