According to a study conducted by

last month, many of the most-commonly used
mobile apps for food delivery, online payments,
grocery shopping and transportation were not accessible to

the visually challenged. The study covered 22 apps.

The 2011 census puts the number of disabled in
the country at 26 million, while advocacy groups
say the real figure is closer to 150 million.Last year,
India recorded nearly nine billion downloads of
mobile-based applications last year.

"The national policy for universal electronic
accessibility says that all IT products and

government mobile based applications like My
Gov, E Pathshala and Prime Minister

Narendra Modi

lacking. The illiterate, aged and those not
proficient in English would also struggle with the apps, the study
found. The guidelines for government websites
laid out accessibility standards in 2009. The
2013 national policy on universal electronic accessibility
clearly upholds equal rights "ensuring that
accessibility standards and guidelines and
universal design concepts are adopted and adhered to."

However, most commonly-used apps fail to follow
this. All 22 of the apps studied were privately
owned but not all were fully compliant with universal standards.
Of taxi-hailing apps Meru, Ola and Uber, only
Uber was completely accessible to the disabled.
The others had mis-labelled or unlabeled buttons and graphics.

government.
Even after being technologically literate, VI are left in lurch as they cannot
use many things, and common people do not even understand why even after being

Nagpur: At first instance, Bhakti Ghatole looks like a girl next door, happily
sitting with her mother, waiting for her turn to receive a gold medal at
NU's convocation. But as her name was announced, she took her mother's help to
reach the stage and accept the medal.

Bhakti lost her eyesight at the age of five after suffering from a deadly eye
cancer. She has undergone as many as 25 chemotherapies for treating the disease.
However, due to her strong determination, she not only survived but has topped
throughout her career so far.

On Saturday, Bhakti was on cloud nine. A student of LAD College, she was
awarded the Nagorao Narayanrao Wazalwar gold medal for topping in political
science
in BA first year.

"I want to excel in all fields and realize my dream of joining the Indian
Administrative Service (IAS) to serve the society. But first I want to complete
my graduation and post-graduation and become a psychologist. I want to thank my
parents, without whom it wouldn't have been possible for me to climb the
ladder of success," she told TOI.

Her parents — Ramesh Ghatole, a development officer with National Insurance
Company, and mother Sushma, a homemaker — were also present at the function.

The bubbly teenager had also topped in SSC exam among blind candidates in
Vidarbha. She scored 87.07% in HSC exam to top Arts stream from Vidarbha last
year.

Bhakti didn't forget to give credit to Aditi Patwardhan, who has been
associated with her since last four years and writing answers on her behalf.
"It's
not easy for a writer to understand what the blind person says and write
accordingly. Without Aditi, it would have been difficult for Bhakti to excel,"
her mother says.

According to her parents, Bhakti was a bit demotivated after suffering the
trauma in childhood but she overcame it with support from all, including their
relatives and her friends. She took help of a software for studies, they added.

[AI] xl not opening

2016-11-20 Thread Payal Kapoor
hi,
when i last used my XL on Friday, it hung while trying to send a
report as an attachment. i tried everything to close it but it
wouldn't.
i force shut down my laptop and when restarted it again, XL wouldn't
open and two days later, it still won't.
the message says "couldn't send command to the programme."
i am using Win 7 and Office 2007.
any idea what i did to mess this whole thing up? this is my most used
programme and it is essential i get it fixed at the earliest.
thanks for any help here.
Payal
