Rajesh,

I have both of them and there are no controls for bass etc. but the
sound quality of Amazon echoe is good. Please don't compare it with
professional speakers. Their USP is not the sound quality for AI. If
you have specific queries please ask. I have used both. If you ask
me I would advise Alexa rather than google home in India for Alexa can also
play Indian radio and BBC Hindi etc.

[AI] 10 crore Indians have no access to a pair of glasses

2018-08-13 Thread Kanchan Pamnani
10 crore Indians have no access to a pair of glasses’ - Times of India Aug
11, 2018, 11.23 PM IST Printed from

MUMBAI: Around 10 crore Indians don’t have access to the simplest way to
see better: A pair of glasses. “Most of them are underprivileged Indians
who are either too old or too young,” said Vinod Daniel, CEO, India Vision
Institute, a not-for-profit trust working to wipe out this public health
problem. It is a joint initiative of Hyderabad-based LV Prasad Eye
Institute and Brien Holden Vision Institute in Sydney. “Preventing
‘preventable’ blindness through timely intervention is our key priority,”
said Daniel, who shuttles between India and Australia for this mission.
“Not having access to glasses is a major problem in Indian, especially in
tier 2 and 3 cities. People either have no awareness that they need glasses
or they don’t know where to get their eyes checked,” said Daniel, who was
in Mumbai to finalise a charity ‘Walk In The Dark’ in Nagpur soon. IVI
conducts Eye See & I Learn and Eye See & I Work initiatives to raise
resources to provide free spectacles that enable children to perform better
in school, and adults to work to their full potential. “Around 10-12% of
children in aged 6-17 across India need glasses,” said Daniel. As 80% of
what children learn is visual, their chances of failing in studies
increases manifold if they can’t see properly. In the 45-plus age group,
the lack of glasses can affect productivity and earning. “The elderly
believe their eyes are not functioning optimally just as their knees no
longer do. But a pair of glasses can increase productivity by 34% and
increase income by 20%. They could make a big difference to people’s
lives,” he added. 8/13/2018 ‘10 crore Indians have no access to a pair of
glasses’ - Times of India
https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/10-crore-indians-have-no-access-to-a-pair-of-glasses/articleshowprint/65370244.cms
2/2 The NGO works in 18 states across India and has screened over two lakh
Indians in five years and provided free spectacles to 35,000 people. The
NGO has identified the lack of trained optometrists as one of the biggest
impediments to the failure to correct refractive error among Indians.
“India needs 1.2 lakh optometrists but has only 45,000. Worse, most are in
tier 1 and 2 cities,” he said, adding that 300 capacity-building exercises
have been conducted across India. The NGO screened 3,000 children each in
Navi Mumbai and Pune schools and is screening more in Nagpur. “In two
years, we want to screen a million people as we have developed a screening
technique in which teachers can conduct initial screening before our
medical team,” said Daniel. The lack of perfect vision has high social
impact. “Vision affects productivity, it affects day-to-day life. The
elderly with vision problems are 50% more likely than those with glasses to
have falls. Road accidents as well as crime is higher,” said Daniel, adding
that World Health Organisation’s studies indicated that uncorrected
refractive errors lead to loss of productivity of $26 billion annually.

How a woman amputee found fellowship in a WhatsApp group - Times of India

Aug 12, 2018, 02.19 AM IST Printed from

The year was 2010. It was a dark, stormy evening — for real! The trees
shook violently in the wind and I listened to music on my headphones. And
then — cue dramatic music — I woke up in a hospital room a while later to
find out that a branch from a tree had fallen on me and completely crushed
one of my legs. I’ll dial down the drama and give you a cold, clinical
summary of what came next — my right leg had to be amputated below my knee
and my life was turned upside down. Over the next couple of months, I had
to stay home for weeks on end. I learnt how to use a wheelchair and
crutches. I realized (or rather, was made to realize) that I now fell under
a new category — ‘disabled’ — something that I vehemently fought against
until I was too exhausted to do so anymore. I hated how new people I met
instantly classified me that way without knowing anything else about me. I
took every opportunity to prevent them from doing this by wearing long
pants and closed shoes. I learnt how to wear a prosthetic leg and I limped
back, literally, to my old life. I went back to college. I dealt with the
questions and the stares. I worked on my gait till it was nearly impossible
for others to tell I had a prosthetic leg. As the years passed, I buried
myself in writing, travel, and work. I felt that I needed to prove that I
was capable of just as much as anyone else, so I went out of my way to hide
the fact that I was disabled, to prove that I was fine. I was so very fine.
So when I got added to a group called Wonder Women in 2014 by a woman I’d
met briefly at my prosthetic clinic, my first reaction was a faint sense of
irritation. It was a group of women leg amputees from different parts of
India, who’d rallied together 8/13/2018 How a woman amputee found
fellowship in a WhatsApp group - Times of India
https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home/sunday-times/how-a-woman-amputee-found-fellowship-in-a-whatsapp-group/articleshowprint/65369094.cms
2/4 to form a WhatsApp support group. It annoyed me that everyone
introduced themselves in the format of ‘name, type of amputation,
location’. There is so much more to me than this, I thought. I was
judgmental. These are people who haven’t moved on from their disability, I
told myself. I don’t need to be in this group. And so, after introducing
myself, I promptly muted notifications for the group. Despite myself,
though, I’d read through the messages during long commutes or slow
evenings. The women shared a variety of things. Sometimes, there were
photographs of travel. Sometimes, anecdotes of funny or angering incidents.
There were stories of pain and discomfort, and appeals for advice on
multiple fronts — boils and rashes, clothes, shoes, romance, pesky
relatives. And a lot of the time, people spoke about milestones. Carrying a
pregnancy to term despite other people being mistrustful of their ability
to do so. Winning a sports championship. As time went on, I found myself
getting more and more involved in these chats. I found myself asking
questions and sending advice whenever I had a relevant experience to share.
I even found myself sending heart emojis. Everything I said was met with
honesty, humour, and camaraderie. When any of my well-meaning family or
friends said things like ‘I understand what you’re going through,’ I had to
always bite my tongue to tell them that no, they did not have the foggiest
idea. That incorporating their suggestions to ‘not care’ or ‘smile it off’
was much easier said than done. Even worse were the people at my prosthetic
clinic? — ?none of whom wore an artificial limb —who only advised me in
cold, clinical terms, ignoring that there was a living, breathing human
being wearing the prosthetic leg. But when women going through the exact
same situations could tell me how they came to make their peace with
things, or to genuinely not care about them, it was far more helpful. I
came to realize that in my desire to see disability as something that had
to be ‘recovered’ from, I had made a huge misjudgement about these women’s
— and my own — place in the world. As women with disabilities, our
experiences are hugely different from men with the same disabilities, as
our appearances, child-bearing ability, and caregiving skills (which are
all obviously the only reason we exist) are continuously questioned and
criticized. Rather than shunning this part of my life as something I’d
‘moved on’ from, I began to see the great possibilities a community like
this gave rise to. I also gradually started being less ashamed of the
‘disabled’ identity, and now I actually embrace it. 8/13/2018 How a woman

MUMBAI: Around 10 crore Indians don’t have access to the simplest way to see
better: A pair of glasses. “Most of them are underprivileged Indians who are
either too old or too young,” said Vinod Daniel, CEO, India Vision Institute, a
not-for-profit trust working to wipe out this public health problem. It is a
joint initiative of Hyderabad-based LV Prasad Eye Institute and Brien Holden
Vision Institute in Sydney. “Preventing ‘preventable’ blindness through timely
intervention is our key priority,” said Daniel, who shuttles between India and
Australia for this mission. “Not having access to glasses is a major problem in
Indian, especially in tier 2 and 3 cities. People either have no awareness that
they need glasses or they don’t know where to get their eyes checked,” said
Daniel, who was in Mumbai to finalise a charity ‘Walk In The Dark’ in Nagpur
soon. IVI conducts Eye See & I Learn and Eye See & I Work initiatives to raise
resources to provide free spectacles that enable children to perform better in
school, and adults to work to their full potential. “Around 10-12% of children
in aged 6-17 across India need glasses,” said Daniel. As 80% of what children
learn is visual, their chances of failing in studies increases manifold if they
can’t see properly. In the 45-plus age group, the lack of glasses can affect
productivity and earning. “The elderly believe their eyes are not functioning
optimally just as their knees no longer do. But a pair of glasses can increase
productivity by 34% and increase income by 20%. They could make a big
difference to people’s lives,” he added. 8/13/2018 ‘10 crore Indians have no

The NGO works in 18 states across India and has screened over two lakh
Indians in five years and provided free spectacles to 35,000 people. The NGO
has identified the lack of trained optometrists as one of the biggest
impediments to the failure to correct refractive error among Indians. “India
needs 1.2 lakh optometrists but has only 45,000. Worse, most are in tier 1 and
2 cities,” he said, adding that 300 capacity-building exercises have been
conducted across India. The NGO screened 3,000 children each in Navi Mumbai and
Pune schools and is screening more in Nagpur. “In two years, we want to screen
a million people as we have developed a screening technique in which teachers
can conduct initial screening before our medical team,” said Daniel. The lack
of perfect vision has high social impact. “Vision affects productivity, it
affects day-to-day life. The elderly with vision problems are 50% more likely
than those with glasses to have falls. Road accidents as well as crime is
higher,” said Daniel, adding that World Health Organisation’s studies indicated
that uncorrected refractive errors lead to loss of productivity of $26 billion
annually.

Hi Kanchan mam, please pass on the following:-
while you are traveling and getting directions with google maps, it
won’t speaks the passing locations and landmarks it only speaks when
you are supposed to take any action E.G turn right or left passed by x
location while it shows a lot of information that can actually be
useful for us.
Same goes for in case of cab and other services where google maps APIs
shows the driver’s location but never speaks the information.
Google map has started taking care of places with accessibility for
wheelchair users, so we too must come forward and take this up.

As 80% of what children learn is visual, their chances of failing in studies
increases manifold if they can’t see properly.

I cannot help but agree, only with the rider that the statement applies to all
domains of life, and is not confined to education of children alone.

How a woman amputee found fellowship in a WhatsApp group - Times of India

Aug 12, 2018, 02.19 AM IST Printed from

The year was 2010. It was a dark, stormy evening — for real! The trees shook
violently in the wind and I listened to music on my headphones. And then — cue
dramatic music — I woke up in a hospital room a while later to find out that a
branch from a tree had fallen on me and completely crushed one of my legs. I’ll
dial down the drama and give you a cold, clinical summary of what came next —
my right leg had to be amputated below my knee and my life was turned upside
down. Over the next couple of months, I had to stay home for weeks on end. I
learnt how to use a wheelchair and crutches. I realized (or rather, was made to
realize) that I now fell under a new category — ‘disabled’ — something that I
vehemently fought against until I was too exhausted to do so anymore. I hated
how new people I met instantly classified me that way without knowing anything
else about me. I took every opportunity to prevent them from doing this by
wearing long pants and closed shoes. I learnt how to wear a prosthetic leg and
I limped back, literally, to my old life. I went back to college. I dealt with
the questions and the stares. I worked on my gait till it was nearly impossible
for others to tell I had a prosthetic leg. As the years passed, I buried myself
in writing, travel, and work. I felt that I needed to prove that I was capable
of just as much as anyone else, so I went out of my way to hide the fact that I
was disabled, to prove that I was fine. I was so very fine.
So when I got added to a group called Wonder Women in 2014 by a woman I’d met
briefly at my prosthetic clinic, my first reaction was a faint sense of
irritation. It was a group of women leg amputees from different parts of India,
who’d rallied together 8/13/2018 How a woman amputee found fellowship in a

2/4 to form a WhatsApp support group. It annoyed me that everyone introduced
themselves in the format of ‘name, type of amputation, location’. There is so
much more to me than this, I thought. I was judgmental. These are people who
haven’t moved on from their disability, I told myself. I don’t need to be in
this group. And so, after introducing myself, I promptly muted notifications
for the group. Despite myself, though, I’d read through the messages during
long commutes or slow evenings. The women shared a variety of things.
Sometimes, there were photographs of travel. Sometimes, anecdotes of funny or
angering incidents.
There were stories of pain and discomfort, and appeals for advice on multiple
fronts — boils and rashes, clothes, shoes, romance, pesky relatives. And a lot
of the time, people spoke about milestones. Carrying a pregnancy to term
despite other people being mistrustful of their ability to do so. Winning a
sports championship. As time went on, I found myself getting more and more
involved in these chats. I found myself asking questions and sending advice
whenever I had a relevant experience to share.
I even found myself sending heart emojis. Everything I said was met with
honesty, humour, and camaraderie. When any of my well-meaning family or friends
said things like ‘I understand what you’re going through,’ I had to always bite
my tongue to tell them that no, they did not have the foggiest idea. That
incorporating their suggestions to ‘not care’ or ‘smile it off’
was much easier said than done. Even worse were the people at my prosthetic
clinic? — ?none of whom wore an artificial limb —who only advised me in cold,
clinical terms, ignoring that there was a living, breathing human being wearing
the prosthetic leg. But when women going through the exact same situations
could tell me how they came to make their peace with things, or to genuinely
not care about them, it was far more helpful. I came to realize that in my
desire to see disability as something that had to be ‘recovered’ from, I had
made a huge misjudgement about these women’s — and my own — place in the world.
As women with disabilities, our experiences are hugely different from men with
the same disabilities, as our appearances, child-bearing ability, and
caregiving skills (which are all obviously the only reason we exist) are
continuously questio

Looking forward.

Re: [AI] Has anyone been able to get a bajaj finserv card in mumbai or anywhere else?

2018-08-13 Thread john clayton
Hello there karthik ,
 Thank you for the reply.
I am aware of the bajaj/ hdfc and tata capital reps at most najor stores
or showrooms.
However don't they require for you to have a check canceled but signed?
Its the signature requirements that end up tripping me every time.
and I suppose my cibil score is likely to be 0 as I don't have a credit
card yet or a loan, so I suppose a credit card is what I need to work on
first, before I atempt these.

Suppose I need to go and research a good credit card which preferably
doesn't have a requirement of signs and the like, but lets see.
There maybe a very slight possibility what with online paperless processes
introduced for creditcards, bank account and so on, but lets see how it
pans out. :)

Re: [AI] google maps

2018-08-13 Thread Ajay Minocha
Hi Ma'am,

Though I generally find maps quite accessible yet Fully agree with
Sunil and Austin's suggestions.

1. Passing landmarks should be spoken, there should be a facility to
turn them on / off as per user's requirement.
2. Downloading offline maps is not accessible at all, This used to be
a boon during the good old nokia days when we used to put entire maps
collection on our SD cards.

Cheers,
Ajay

Re: [AI] Has anyone been able to get a bajaj finserv card in mumbai or anywhere else?

2018-08-13 Thread Mahesh S. Panicker
Twice I was suggested by electronic dealers to go for the Bajaj card.
Both times, the Bajaj representative told me they can't issue a card
to a blind person. One of my friends also had a similar experience
with them.
With banks its not always easy with a creditcard, but with RBI
regulations and some persistence, you have a pretty decent chance of
eventually succeeding. I could manage the same with ICICI bank.
Initially the person send to collect my documents expressed
apprehensions about signatures. I told him about the RBI circular.
Then they chose not to deny but to sit on the application without
processing it. I contacted the customercare, wrote to the senior
management too. Had posted the same here and Harish ji had also taken
it up. Eventually the relented and processed my application.
At least in Delhi, the Bajaj lot have been found to be more disdainful
of the law of the land and with a thik skinn. If we could take it up
with the senior management at a collective level, think the card is
actually a pretty handy one to have.

[AI] Use of AIRA Glasses

2018-08-13 Thread Rahul Bajaj
Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has tried using AIRA
glasses:https://aira.io/how-it-works

The basic idea here is that you have to wear these glasses that they send you
after you install the app. You are able to connected with a live sighted person
who can look at your surroundings through your glasses and answer questions
that can help you navigate with greater ease. I am always a little skeptical
about these inventions, but this one has received great feedback.

Best,
Rahul

Re: [AI] Need help, How to track my iPhone's SpeedDots tactile screen protector from the U.S?

2018-08-13 Thread Kartik Sawhney
Hi Rishi,

I was in a very similar situation as you, except that it was worse and
had to do with some official documents regarding my work permit in the
US. Unfortunately, USPS is pretty bad with international shipment. In
my case, the status on the USPS website showed that the package had
departed the United States, but there were no updates after that. It
turned out that it was at some random airport somewhere in Europe for
over a week before it made it to India.

I would advise contacting the Foreign Post Office in Delhi to check on
the status. If you are in Delhi, or know someone in Delhi, it might be
even worthwhile to visit them in person, since they often have
information that is otherwise not available online. They can also
sometimes expedite the process. You should also reach out to USPS.

2018-08-13 Thread Nirmal Verma
Hi Preeti

As per bookshares rule, a rehab professional or a special educator can
certify you. I thunk the same would be applicable to sugamya also.

Please register in sugamya and choise indic trust library as your library.
I will get that approved.

Re: [AI] google maps

2018-08-13 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Yes, announcing passing landmarks, saving a place and downloading off line maps
needs to be accessible.
Besides, some description of route preview, say turnings etc. also needs to be
there.

Hi Ma'am,

Though I generally find maps quite accessible yet Fully agree with Sunil and
Austin's suggestions.

1. Passing landmarks should be spoken, there should be a facility to turn them
on / off as per user's requirement.
2. Downloading offline maps is not accessible at all, This used to be a boon
during the good old nokia days when we used to put entire maps collection on
our SD cards.

Cheers,
Ajay
