Fellowship Program Openings


The  

 Envision Research Institute (ERI) announces postdoctoral fellowships for 
applied research in blindness and visual impairment. Applicants must hold a 
doctorate degree at the time of award (PhD, MD, OD, OTD) in engineering, 
computer science, psychology, vision science or related fields. Awards are up 
to two years in duration. Training and research is conducted at ERI, however 
the fellow may travel to his/her mentor institution for up to 6 months to 
establish the collaboration and receive additional training not available at 
ERI. Successful research proposals will incorporate Envision’s resources in 
Wichita, Kansas, which include a vision clinic, low vision rehabilitation 
services, early childhood development center, outreach and clinical education, 
and employment for the blind and visually impaired. 

Submit a Letter of Intent and CV to   
resea...@envisionus.com no later than 12:00pm CST on Friday, December 7,2018.

 





Letters of Intent should not exceed two (2) pages, and must contain a brief 
description of the following: 

*   Description of the candidate and his/her background
*   Brief description of the intended research project and how it addresses 
the mission of Envision
*   Proposed external mentor(s) and what new training they would support 
for the fellow
*   List of topical areas relevant to the research (for guiding appointment 
of selection committee)
*   Applicant’s CV (not part of 2 page limit)

Invitations to apply will be sent in mid-December 2018, with applications due 
on January 25, 2019. Awards will be announced in February 2019, with the 
Fellowship expected to commence by Spring 2019.

New Delhi: A PhD scholar at Jawaharlal Nehru University's School of
Computational and Integrative Sciences (SCIS), with guidance from his
mentor Dr Binod Kumar Kanaujia, has developed an artificial
intelligence device which will help visually-impaired people get an
impression of objects and/or persons in front of them.


The entire apparatus comprises of a chip and an antenna placed inside
the retina, as well as spectacles mounted with a video camera and an
antenna which will be worn by the blind person.




Explaining the normal process of image formation in the eye, the
scholar Vikrant Kaim said that photoreceptor cells capture light
coming from the outside, using which a picture engraved over the
retina.

However, in visually impaired people, these photoreceptor cells are damaged.

"The antenna and circuits inside the camera will the record the image
of the outside environment. After this, the signal from the glasses's
antenna will reach to the antenna of the chip in the retina," Kaim
said.




"The chip will be connected by a small circuit to the antenna and it
will receive outside images through the signal from the camera," he
added. The signals will finally be processed by the chip and an image
will be formed on the retina of the wearer.

"With the help of artificial intelligence equipment, such people will
get an impression of objects (in front of them). The entire function
will work through wireless connectivity," Kaim told Millennium Post.




He said the faculty at the SCIS plan on providing the entire apparatus
to visually impaired people at highly affordable costs, compared to
similar devices available in other parts of the world.

Kaim further said that the antenna will work throughout a person's
life. "We are working on improving the chip. The device's antenna is
capable of running throughout the person's life," he added.

It is really sad to hear about Ram Babu. He was the one who introduced Voice 
Vision to TISS and enabled us to present so many papers, couple of which were 
jointly with him. 

I was aware about his medical issues, but he always said that its curing. I 
really feel sad and bad for his parents at the senior age they had to suffer 
from such a great loss. 

I pray to God that his soul rests in peace and give enough strength to his 
family to bear the loss.
