Re: [AI] Policies for the disabled at educational institutes/ universities

2020-02-23 Thread Rahul Kelapure
It may be so Asif but the stand taken by ICSI is not the way to deal
with this issue.

If there was any such case in the past, appropriate action should have
been taken.

The only way to deal with these kind of so called misuse is to have
strict invigilation in the examination hall.

In the exams like CS, the stakes are high and you need someone that
you know who can write fast, understand certain terms quickly, good
handwriting and so on.

My experience with the places where the scribe was provided by the
institute such as Delhi Judicial Services exam was horrible to say the
least.

I had spoken to the central council of ICSI couple of years back and
explained them the issue and it seemed to me that, they understood the
matter and allowed me scribe of my choice, but unfortunately,
situation appears to have remained the same or even worse.

[AI] Policies for the disabled at educational institutes/ universities

2020-02-23 Thread turab chimthanawala
Dear all,
We are facing a major hurdle in convincing the CS institute to allow a
friend the services of his own scribe for his CS Executive exams .
We have gone up till the Central Council level. However, folks here
are hard wired that such facility if allowed (obstensibly basis their
past experiences) would be misused by the blind examinee. Neither the
2018 Guidelines nor invoking feelings of empathy seem to convince
them.
The only way out seems to furnish them with disabled friendly policies
of other educational institutes/ universities.
Would be very grateful if I can get my hands on any such policy.
Thanking you
Best
Turab

[AI] Any Chess players here?

2020-02-23 Thread Nirandas Thavorath
Hello all,

This is my first post here so let me introduce myself.
I'm Nirandas from Kerala. I'm a programmer and mostly develop web
applications. I'm blind and use screen reader (NVDA).

Now to the topic: I'm interested in the game of chess and would like
to connect with any blind chess players or enthusiasts here. I'm doing
some research regarding blindness, chess, online games
 andaccessibility.
Please revert back here on list or directly to me if you are blind and
 play chess.

 Some of my questions are:
 1. Is there a Standard site / tool which is used by blind players?
 2. Do blind chess players play online chess? If so, which site is
most accessible?

 thank you

[AI] How to turn on Dark Mode in iOS / iPadOS & in Android 9 or higher

2020-02-23 Thread Ronald Escrader
FYI:

How to turn on dark mode in iOS / iPadOS

First, you’re going to need to make sure you’ve updated your iPhone or
iPad to iOS or iPadOS 13, at minimum. For the former, that means
you’ll need at
least an iPhone SE or iPad Air 2. To update your device to the most
modern version of iOS you can get, select Settings app, select
General, and select
Software Update.

Once you have iOS / iPadOS 13 running, enabling your device’s dark
mode is similarly simple. Select Settings > Display & Brightness, and
then pick Light
or Dark.

You can also use the “Automatic” setting to shift your device from its
Light theme to its Dark theme at sunrise or sunset (or on whatever
custom schedule
you prefer). And if you find that some of your favorite apps don’t
have a dark mode they can use, you can force that, too.

How to turn on dark mode in Android 9 or higher

You’ll first need to make sure you’re using the latest version of
Android—specifically, Android 9, at minimum. For example, the Google
Pixel stock version
of Android, checking for and updating the smartphone involves
selecting the Settings app, selecting System, selecting Advanced, and
selecting System Update.
(The specific steps / names of screens might vary depending on which
Android you have; Samsung Galaxy S9 owners, for example, would go
Settings > System
Update > Check for Updates)

Once you are updated, go back to your Settings app. select Display,
and you should either see an option for “Dark theme,” “Night mode,” or
something to
that effect. If you don’t, select the Advanced section, and you should
find it there.

There’s no “schedule” feature for dark mode on Android; it’s either on
or off. However, if you want to give yourself a little extra control
over whether
you’re staring at black or white backgrounds, swipe down from the top
of your device, pull down the Quick Settings bar to expand it, and
select the pen
icon in the lower-left corner. From there, you’ll be able to add a
dark mode shortcut, which at least gives you an easy way to switch
modes.

[AI] What Do Alexa Ring Colors Mean?

2020-02-23 Thread Ronald Escrader
Hi All,

 Did You Know?

What Do Alexa Ring Colors Mean?

Amazon Echo devices are known for their distinct Alexa ring colors.
These look very cool in the dark, but their purpose expands beyond
 cool aesthetics.

Knowing the meaning behind ring colors is fundamental for interacting
with the device. If you have partial or low vision, the following
 maybe helpful to
 you.

 Blue Alexa ring color

Blue is the ring color you will see most often. Amazon Echo devices
emit a spinning blue ring when they are powered on. The device will
 also display a
blue ring when listening. In addition, a lighter tone of blue will
point towards the direction of the person who woke the smart speaker.

Once the user asks a question or requests an action, the Blue Alexa
ring color will alternate between blue and light blue. You may also
 see a spinning
blue light that ends in a purple flash. This indicates Do Not Disturb
 has been activated.

 White Alexa ring color

Amazon Echo devices use a white Alexa ring color to display volume
levels. If the volume is set to 100%, the whole Alexa ring will be
 white. If it’s at
50%, only half will be lit. If you ever see a spinning white color,
this means Alexa Guard is on Away Mode.

 Orange Alexa ring color

When connecting to your network, the color will turn orange and start spinning.

 Purple Alexa ring color

A purple Alexa ring color is letting you know the device is having
trouble connecting to Wi-Fi. You can check your router or look into
 the device settings
 using the Amazon Alexa app.

 Green Alexa ring color

The color will flash green when someone is calling you or Dropping In
on your device. This will turn into a spinning green light during a
 call.

 Yellow Alexa ring color

The Alexa ring color will pulsate in yellow when you have an unopened
message. Just ask Alexa to check your notifications or play your
 messages to hear
 them.

 Red Alexa ring color

The color will be solid red when the Amazon Echo device’s microphone
has been turned off. This will also happen when you turn off the
 camera (if your device
 has one).

 Lights off

When an Amazon Echo device has no lights on it means it is listening
and ready for your orders. It could also mean the device has no power.

Re: [AI] Suggestions needed on OCR apps for Android

2020-02-23 Thread Rahul Kelapure
Kibo is a promising app but it has strainge issues like if you run OCR
on a PDF document, it will show that, the OCR is being performed but
after the OCR is complete, the app will crash and you have to repeate
the whole process. even then, the problem is the same.

It is not useful for multipal page document. however, its good if
there are just 1 or 2 pages to OCR and read.

I hope, Kibo folks resolve this issue at the earliest.

Just to share, I tried out Text Fairy, and though it is not a specific
app for visually impaired, seems a good option to try out. It gives

Greetings of the day
Your genuine and serious participation is urgently needed. Kindly read
the below message and please cooperate in getting the needful done.
Vaishnav and Srujana are a part of team of researchers from India.

We are a team of researchers attempting to understand how people with
visual impairments in India experience the financial landscape in the
country. We would love to speak with you about your experiences with
the banking system in the country and its inaccessibilities. We are
interested in your experiences with physical banking, challenges you
experience with bank visits and you workaround those challenges. If
you use digital banking we would love to hear about that too!
Finally, we are interested in how you handle payments in general and
reasons for the same. We also would like to hear from you about what
changes could help better the banking system and how that would work.
Also, we are keen on hearing from more women about their experiences.
We hope to take the information from you, summarize our findings and
share it with the rest of the visually impaired community in the
country. If you are interested please email finpractices2...@gmail.com
