  Dear all,

Our beloved friend and moderator Harish Kotian turns 60 today and will be
retiring from RBI this month.

Harish is one of the first people with blindness adopted to era of technology
and perhaps first person to have learnt technology at mainstream institutions
like Aptech. who I have met. He is certainly an inspiration. During his term
working at RBI, Bangalore, he provided guidance to NAB Karnataka and during his
term at RBI, Hyderabad, he guided many of us while I was running Computer
Training through Inforays Technologies. I remember both Rajesh and Harish have
conducted assessment for our students.

Harish, wishing you a very happy birthday and may you have a healthy and
peaceful life ahead. I'm sure you will continue your journey by inspiring more.

Disclaimer: I know I am violating list guidelines by sending this greetings.
But I thought it's important we celebration people who inspired us.

[AI] Insulting bankers

2020-08-20 Thread Shadab Husain
Hi friends,

Recently I went to withdraw money from Indian Bank, but there the
officials told me that I can’t do it on my own.

Actually I have a joint account with my father, and the staff said
that I need to bring my father every time I take out the money.

They didn’t give me a definite reply when I asked them if this rule is
applicable for everyone who has a joint account. Instead, probably to
dilute my question, they read from their computer something like
“Blind account holder joint with father,” and the translation of this
that they came up with was that I’m barred from doing any transaction
alone.

I felt emotionally wounded because their tone was insulting.

However, things took an about-turn when I told them that it wasn’t
written that I can’t do the transaction alone.

But here they brought their sympathies on the surface – asking me if
something untoward happens with me, who is going to be responsible.

I replied if anything drastic happens with me outside the bank, I’ll
be responsible for it, and urged them to do what’s required of them
and what’s there in the rules.

They softened, consulted among themselves, and handed me the cash.

But the problem is that whenever staff changes in this bank, I face
this humiliation. Last time I had to pull up the RBI
guidelines/circulars on my phone for the manager’s perusal, and after
much debating he was persuaded to give me the cash.

And this has happened with me several times.

They convey falsehood so confidently and emphatically that anyone who
hasn’t read the rules would promptly believe in what they say. Also,
in an attempt to shore up their fabrications, these employees throw in
jargons and talk about big labels – AGM or whatever top designations
are in the banks.

Stepping out of the bank, a painful feeling twitched me, which was
that if you’re blind and unaware/uneducated, you’ll be treated as an
animal. Their harsh and insulting attitude towards me when they were
under the view that I don’t know anything blew up this biting reality
to the fore.

It’s time regulators initiated exemplary measures against these
staffers to set right the wrongs. And this mailing list, with so many
bankers and activists, is the right quarter to begin the work from.

Regards,

Shadab

This is really sad but this is equally true that nobody want to take any
risk in terms of handing-over cash to a visually impaired person. Their
intension is not bad at all. People doesn't want to take any chance in terms
of visually impaired person. most of these are not aware with the guidelines
of Reserve Bank of India at all, so I request you not to take all these
issues seriously. the things are getting changed by the time as the bank
staff members are getting aware. - Original Message -

It’s time regulators initiated exemplary measures against these
staffers to set right the wrongs. And this mailing list, with so many
bankers and activists, is the right quarter to begin the work from.

Shadab

Re: [AI] Insulting bankers

2020-08-20 Thread Sowmya Kb
HI Shadab,
The only way to change the system is bring such instances to media out
there. So my suggestion would be to have a hidden camera next time when you
go to the bank and record everything and tag the branch to the video and
put it out there in public. Only then there will be some change. We as
blind must stand up for ourselves, no one else will stand for us. May be
blind citizen journalist can bring that change each time when they
encounter such instances while dealing with discrimination and harassment.
Also please try to get the names of the staff and write blog posts
narrating your instance in case you cannot record the video.
I am not sure how accessible their ATM's are for blind, if not possibly all
blind in this group can do a video on accessible banks for blind in India
Video, by building on their experience with each one of the banks out
there. That we have sufficient data to push RBI go heavy on banks which
are not accommodating persons with disabilities.

Sowmya

2020-08-20 Thread Chintan Vasavada
Dear Friends, Greetings. I lost bothe the parents in less than a year from
October 2019 to April 2020. I had also very insulting experiences with the
banks but let me inform you that when ever I face such experience with BOB I
always make it a point to inform about the whole incident to General Manager
HR and Operations . They always take strong action in this regard and the
bankers attitude get change. The only thing we need is to mail such
authorities and inform them about such practices with us. they will
definately look into the matter and do the needful. Regards Chintan

Subject: [AI] Insulting bankers

Regards,

Shadab
