Hi All again,

I had found an idea in the MS Accessibility user voice forum on Windows'
screen curtain.

It was posted 3 years ago. 8 days back I asked for an update citing another
use case. I did not receive any response, neither I expect any as nothing
has been there for last 3 years except for what looks to be an automated
kind of reply. Have a look

Recently I went to withdraw money from Indian Bank, but there the officials 
told me that I can’t do it on my own.

Actually I have a joint account with my father, and the staff said that I need 
to bring my father every time I take out the money.

They didn’t give me a definite reply when I asked them if this rule is 
applicable for everyone who has a joint account. Instead, probably to dilute my 
question, they read from their computer something like “Blind account holder 
joint with father,” and the translation of this that they came up with was that 
I’m barred from doing any transaction alone.

I felt emotionally wounded because their tone was insulting.

However, things took an about-turn when I told them that it wasn’t written that 
I can’t do the transaction alone.

But here they brought their sympathies on the surface – asking me if something 
untoward happens with me, who is going to be responsible.

I replied if anything drastic happens with me outside the bank, I’ll be 
responsible for it, and urged them to do what’s required of them and what’s 
there in the rules.

They softened, consulted among themselves, and handed me the cash.

But the problem is that whenever staff changes in this bank, I face this 
humiliation. Last time I had to pull up the RBI guidelines/circulars on my 
phone for the manager’s perusal, and after much debating he was persuaded to 
give me the cash.

And this has happened with me several times.

They convey falsehood so confidently and emphatically that anyone who hasn’t 
read the rules would promptly believe in what they say. Also, in an attempt to 
shore up their fabrications, these employees throw in jargons and talk about 
big labels – AGM or whatever top designations are in the banks.

Stepping out of the bank, a painful feeling twitched me, which was that if 
you’re blind and unaware/uneducated, you’ll be treated as an animal. Their 
harsh and insulting attitude towards me when they were under the view that I 
don’t know anything blew up this biting reality to the fore.

It’s time regulators initiated exemplary measures against these staffers to set 
right the wrongs. And this mailing list, with so many bankers and activists, is 
the right quarter to begin the work from.

Online teaching-learning is becoming a new normal these days, especially owing 
to the continuing hazards relating to the covid-19 pandemic. In a sense, 
e-learning  has potentials to enable people with disabilities to participate in 
teaching-learning process from their home, without exposing themselves to the 
pandemic risks. However, lack of adequate information and awareness of online 
tools and the available assistive alternatives would inevitably result in 
exclusion of people with disabilities. Both The disability community as well as 
education sector in general have to be aware of mainstream online educational 
tools and their inbuilt assistive solutions. Unfortunately, institutions while 
rapidly transitioning to online mode appear to be doing the least to create 
required awareness of this kind. 

In our attempt to contribute and intervene in the field of e-learning from the 
disability perspective, Sambhavna invites all for a demonstration of online 
tools offered by Google which are widely been adopted.  Mr. Viraj Kafle, 
Assistant Professor, Dyal Singh College, DU will give a demonstration of Google 
Meet, Classroom and Calendar from  screen-reader users' perspective. The 
demonstration will be hosted on Zoom on Sunday, August 23rd, 2020 from 2:45

Hi,

Has anyone tried scanning some Hindi text with Lookout? It is simply
ignoring it for me. I thought just like Talkback it will support Hindi as
well. Any idea if I need to have some settings on or Hindi is simply not at
its list yet?
