[AI] Eye on the basket

2020-09-30 Thread Kanchan Pamnani
Eye on the basketKartiki Patel, captain of the Indian women’s wheelchair
basketball team, on breaking myths and barriers

| suktara.gh...@timesgroup.com
TWEETS @suktaraGMIRROR

Mumbai Mirror - 01-10-2020

Kartiki Patel is truly in her elements when she’s zooming around the
basketball court and scoring baskets. The captain of the Indian women’s
wheelchair basketball team is not only the most recognisable face of the
sport in India, her journey is an inspiring tale of grit and resilience in
the face of overwhelming odds.

The youngest of three siblings, Patel lost her parents early. She studied
MCA and was working for an IT firm, when the accident that was to change
her life forever, struck in 2008. She was travelling with her cousins to
Gujarat when the car lost control on the highway, skidded off the road and
toppled over. “My cousins managed to get out, but I couldn’t. I suffered
from severe spinal cord injury. I have since been paralysed below the
waist,” she shares.

That the period that followed was difficult is an understatement. “Up until
my accident, I had been a very outdoorsy person and loved playing
basketball. One day I could walk and run and the next day I couldn’t even
move my legs, or even sit up by myself,” says Patel.

She did physiotherapy at home but had no idea about mental rehabilitation.
“It was quite a frustrating time,” she concedes. It was Raj Dhyani, her
superior at the IT firm, who mentored and encouraged her to join work. Four
months after the accident, Patel was back in office with a lot of support
from family and friends. “Meeting other people and beginning work was part
of my mental rehab.”

*Back in the game*

Patel had always loved basketball but after the accident, she had no access
to any sport. Sunil Shah, a counselor and Dhyani’s friend, suggested
swimming. “But even in a city like Mumbai, the pools, the path to them, or
the changing rooms are not accessible. The coaches were not ready to teach
someone with disability either,” she says. Finally, Shah decided to teach
her himself at the Goregaon Sports Complex, which had a small washroom
where she could change.

“I learnt swimming again and, under Sunil uncle’s guidance, participated in
a zonal competition. I then qualified for the National Para Swimming
Competition in 2014 where I won three medals,” says Patel, adding that it
was a huge eye-opener for her. It’s also where she met Madhavi Latha, the
chairperson of the Wheelchair Basketball Federation of India (WBFI). “They
were organising the first wheelchair basketball national competition in
India and since I’d played earlier, they asked me to join,” she says.

She also started playing wheelchair badminton as an individual sport around
the same time under the mentorship of a few ex-Army officials at the
Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre, Pune, and won three national
championships between 2015 and 2017.

*Netting the ball*

Basketball, however, remained her primary focus. Patel trained under Louis
George Meprath, an ex-Navy captain who’s now the national women’s team
coach. She soon started playing international championships and became the
captain of the team in 2018.

The days leading up to the laurels are of course, steeped in sweat and
blood.

“When you play basketball on foot, you just think where you want to go and
your legs take you there automatically.

But in the case of wheelchair basketball, you have to use your hands to
move the wheelchair as well as control the ball,” shares Patel. “I’m still
learning new skills and techniques.”

Captainship, says Patel, has been a huge learning experience. Her primary
role is to ensure that all her teammates are well cared for and practise
according to individual capabilities. “A lot of our players don’t come from
privileged backgrounds, so when we go abroad, or have foreign mentors, I
try to assist them and act as their translator,” she says.

*An accessible world*

While Patel is eagerly waiting to get back to the game once the lockdown
restrictions ease, she’s simultaneously working on a blueprint to build a
more accessible world. She plans to organise a training camp for regular
coaches to teach them wheelchair basketball.

“The idea is to train them and create awareness, so in turn they can teach
and bring up new athletes from far-flung districts, where people don’t have
access to specialised training camps,” says Patel. “A lot of people don’t
even know about the sport. Many think, for instance, that the basketball
court will get damaged if you run a wheelchair on it. It’s a myth.”

The inspiration came from a 15-day sports visitor’s programme organised by
the US consulate that she attended last year. It gave her an insight into
the support facilities provided to differently-abled athletes in the
country. “In the US or the UK, you are put into sports rehab soon after
physical rehabilitation. It helps both physical and mental recuperation,”
says Patel, who has done a Master’s in Social Entrepreneurship from the
Tata Ins

Re: [AI] Query regarding cleaning robots

2020-09-30 Thread Ajay Minocha
Hi Aziz,

MI cleaning robot by Xiaomi should also do the job but these things
are not generally suitable for small flats having congested layout. I
am yet to come across anyone which has an accessible mobile
application. I have found manual mops which can be operated while
standing to be quite hassle free. Those cost around INR1500 with extra
brushes and a bucket having wheals to take those from one place to
other.

Cheers,
Ajay

[AI] How to create a duplicate of a sheet in Excel

2020-09-30 Thread Vaibhav Saraf
Hi Friends,

I am not able to find the shortcut to create the copy of a sheet in Excel.
I am using Office 365.

The way it is normally done:

1. Right click on the sheet name in the sheet navigation bar at the bottom
left of the screen.
2. Choose *Move or Copy* from the context menu.
3. Choose the sheet beyond which you want to have the new sheet from the
dialogue and check the box titled *Create a Copy*.
4. Press Ok.

If anyone knows how this whole process can be done only with keyboard
commands please let me know.

Thanks,
Vaibhav

[AI] Daily Eyeway Alerts

2020-09-30 Thread Ritu Jain
Dear All,

Please find the below Daily Eyeway Alerts:

1. News-
Two Hyderabadis, working towards building a more accessible world, win
design awards. HYDERABAD: Digital accessibility should be a part of
company policies. Are you providing cab services and bathrooms for
your disabled employees? Do your lifts have braille labels? These are
not big changes. But unfortunately, most workplaces are yet to tap the
potential of people with disabilities,” says Raghavendra Satish Peri
from Secunderabad, who was one of the recipients of the NCPEDP-Mphasis
Universal Design Awards 2020.
Accessibility is not limited to physical spaces but also applies to
information, technology, transport, services, aids and appliances.
While designing public spaces, offices or digital content, people with
disabilities are often left out. The National Centre for Promotion of
Employment for Disabled People has honoured citizens who are working
towards making the world more inclusive. Another person from
Hyderabad who received a special jury award is Dr Srinivas Puppala.

stories, hear some readings, and engage in unpacking each strand of
online dating with a disability, particularly for disabled women. The
session will be on zoom in English and Indian Sign Language. Live
captioning will be provided. Please do register here:
