[AI] Survey on air travel experience

2022-05-24 Thread C. Lyngdoh
Dear Friends

Warm greetings from Enable India. The disability sector is totally
disillusioned by the inhumane incident that occurred with a few
teenage boy with disability by the Indigo Airlines. It is utterly
frustrating to witness such insensitive incident after all our
advocacies with the DGCA as well as the individual airlines. This
incident has initiated us to conduct an online survey regarding the
experiences of persons with disabilities while traveling by air. We
will be really appreciate if you can take out 10 minutes of your time
to respond to this survey by the 31st May 2022. Please click on the
link below

Thank you for your support

[AI] Tax exemption on buying vehicles for PWDs

2022-05-24 Thread Amar Jain

Hi Guys,

There was a CCPD order in 2020 which stated that all disabilities should
be provided similar tax exemptions on buying car for their own use.

Where are the circulars issued by relevant ministries on GST and other
taxes?

Regards,

Amar Jain

2022-05-24 Thread megha patangi
Hi Sandeep,

Greetings!

Yes your friend can attend it from any place of their comfort.
The session will be on Zoom, so you just need to provide me the email
address of that person, and we will share the credentials to all the
participants.

Also we will be creating a whatsapp group for co-ordination and post
course regular follow-ups, so once you are added there, you can add
him too.
Joining credentials will also be shared on the group.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Megha

Re: [AI] Denial of Video KYC to Persons with Vision Impairment

2022-05-24 Thread Shek Mohammad Ali
There is no way to lodge a complaint since the bitter truth is we cannot focus
our KYC documents.
There must be some alternative solution for video KYC.
Aadhaar/PAN cards can be validated but why do they need Video KYC still?
I believe central KYCs have to be made effective.
Once the central KYC is received from any of the banks it should be considered
for other banking services as well.

Thanks and best regards,
Ali

[AI] Denial of Video KYC to Persons with Vision Impairment

2022-05-24 Thread Harshit Lohia
Dear List Members,
I had taken up with RBI the issue of persons with vision impairment
being denied the facility of video KYC by banks. As a follow up of the
complaint I have to send some instances of formal complaints lodged by
persons with vision impairment on the captioned subject matter. This
will serve as a case study for further action. So, I request all the
list members to share with me, off the list, copies of formal
complaints lodged by them on being denied video KYC by any bank.

Looking forward for your urgent response.

Regards
Harshit Lohia

Hi Megha

Thanks a lot for introducing this course to us. Really appreciate.
Just one question. You said we could share this course with a friend
on the same registration fees. I suppose that friend could be
attending the session from their own place? Please advise how to share
the credentials with them?

Thanks and best regards

In this episode of Eyeway Conversations, George Abraham speaks with, Sabriye
Tenberken, a German Tibetologist and co-founder of the organization Braille
Without Borders. Sabriye became totally blind by the age of twelve due to
Retinitis Pigmentosa, a degenerative eye condition. Despite a setback at an
early age, she learned to deal with her blindness. An adventurer at heart, she
wanted to travel the world. After completing High school at an Institute for
the Blind in Germany, Sabriye enrolled at the University of Bonn and focused
her studies on central Asia. She was the only blind student out of the thirty
thousand. With no Tibetan texts available in braille, she developed her own
method of translating the Tibetan language into braille. It later became the
officially recognized Tibetan Braille. Sabriye left college to travel alone to
China. She traveled on horseback from China through rural Tibet and discovered
a deep prejudice against the blind children who were shunned and hidden away
from the world. She talked to parents about enrolling their blind children in
the residential school she planned to open in Lhasa. She persuaded them that
their children, too, could learn to read and write, and even ride a horse.
Committed to bringing a change in the lives of these children, Sabriye along
with her partner, Paul Kronenberg started Braille Without Borders (BWB), a
nonprofit organization. In addition to the school in Lhasa, BWB runs a
vocational training centre for blind adults with a farm and cheese factory near
Shigatse. In 2009, they also set up kanthari International at
Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India, an educational and training institute, where
they train social entrepreneurs from various vulnerable groups with all the
required tools and skills to drive social change. Tune in to learn more about
her social venture in India and her story of courage, resilience, and
determination!

[AI] BGFI’s Knowledge Transfer on Assistive Applications

2022-05-24 Thread Blind Graduates' Forum of India
Dear all,
Greetings from Blind Graduates Forum of India (BGFI)and XRCVC, St.
Xavier’s College, Mumbai!
After a long break, BGFI is back with its physical classroom session
along with XRCVC on account of Global Accessibility Awareness Day
(GAAD).
When: Saturday, 28th May from 3:30 to 5:30 PM.
Venue: LR 61, hostel building, 3rd Floor, St. Xavier's College, 5,
Mahapalika Marg, Mumbai – 41.
(Courtesy: XRCVC)
Since accessibility is of utmost importance to all persons with
disabilities, we will be demonstrating 2 assistive applications
1. I-Stem: An OCR based android app developed for documents and
audio-video accessibility. Unlike other OCR apps, the app provides
proper formatting of a page including tables, heading, multi-column
layout and documents containing mathematics. Along with documents
accessibility, the app also provides the text extraction from videos
for easy understanding of screen share during the online calls or
classes. The application will be demonstrated by Shakul Sonker,
Co-founder I-Stem.
2. Spacefelt: QR code-based Android application that helps users
with visual impairment easily label, scan, and identify things around
them. This app has to be used along with the Spacefelt waterproof
stickers or cloth-based tags. We’ll have Vivian Manohar demonstrating
the application to us. Vivian is the CEO of Grailmaker Innovations, an
Assistive Tech start-up based out of Hyderabad. He pursued his Masters
in Mechanical Engineering in Germany and went on to work as a product
Manager at the Innovations department, LV Prasad Eye Institute.

The Price disabled people pay for living in a normal world.

Abhishek Anicca, Times of India, 15th May 2022

Not normal. Not allowed to board a plane. Not allowed to sit in a restaurant.
Not allowed access to public places. Not allowed to apply for certain teaching
positions. Not allowed to be treated like an adult. Not allowed to express
sexual desires. Allowed to dream?

There is no fixed criteria for what is 'normal'. Often, what shapes the idea of
normal is what is considered a deviation from the norm, which, in turn, is a
reflection of how a society has evolved, what it values. Last week, a child was
not allowed to board a plane at the Ranchi Airport because according to an
airline official he wasn't behaving normally. Could it be a mere coincidence
that he was a wheelchair user? Are all the children and teenagers throwing
tantrums at the airport barred from boarding a plane? I guess we all know the
answer.

We still ask the questions, though. What if their tantrums cause discomfort to
the people in the plane? What if their wheelchair causes discomfort to the
people sitting in a restaurant? What if their bodies or expressions cause
discomfort to the other children in a classroom? Exclusion is a price disabled
people pay for the imagined discomfort of able-bodied people.
That's the truth, no matter how bitter it might seem.

You will see them according to the position you occupy in the social ladder. If
you are a government official, you will treat the disabled person as a
beneficiary. If you know disabled people only from social media, you will treat
them as inspirational role models. If you happen to be a parent of a disabled
child or know someone close who has a disabled child, you will feel bad for the
parents. After everything they have done, they certainly don’t deserve more
barriers. And yes, we are using the word disabled and not differently abled or
specially abled. What's special about getting your dignity taken away?

There was some sunshine in the Ranchi incident, with fellow passengers becoming
advocates and this advocacy spreading to social media. There is empathy left in
the world, perhaps. But was there really any empathy for the disabled person or
just the parents? That is an important question. The trauma, the shouting, the
loss of dignity that this young disabled person must have gone through is
unimaginable. Expressing yourself to your parents, only to be judged by the
whole world because of it. That's a position no one wants to be in. But many of
us lack the imagination to even understand that.

If our imagination wasn't limited, we, as a society would have treated persons
with disabilities as equal members of our society. Treated everyone with
respect and respected their rights. Made our cities more accessible.
Made sure that everyone received education, could afford healthcare and buy
mobility aids. We don't. The disabled person only props up in our societal
imagination as an inspiration or a tragedy. They are treated as equals only in
speech and seldom in spirit. It only gets worse depending on caste, gender and
class locations.

It's not about one incident. Many disabled people have to show a 'fit to fly'
certificate to board a plane, fight for their wheelchairs broken in transit,
and even crawl through the narrow aisles of a plane. It has happened before and
even after court cases and media struggles this continues to happen. Away from
the eyes of the onlookers. Away from the limelight. Loss of dignity is part of
the routine. Normalized through lack of sensitization and lack of stronger laws.

The disabled person is out on their own. They can't spend half their life
getting the law implemented. Writing to disability commissioners. Waiting for a
reply. Campaigning. Petitioning. Doing social media activism for every incident
that happens. And these incidents of discrimination happen far too often. How
do you expect a person to keep going to the courts for getting a job or getting
admission despite having the qualifications? Or run from pillar to post to get
recognized as a person with a disability.
When will they live their life? It's exhausting.

We have made some progress in the last few decades. But new laws or new words
won't be really effective unless the perception of what is normal changes. The
diversity of different bodies, different ways of thinking, different ways of
existing must become

[AI] Conversation with Sabriye Tenberken: Exciting and enjoyable

2022-05-24 Thread George Abraham
In this episode of Eyeway Conversations, George Abraham speaks with, Sabriye
Tenberken, a German Tibetologist and co-founder of the organization Braille
Without Borders. Sabriye became totally blind by the age of twelve due to
Retinitis Pigmentosa, a degenerative eye condition. Despite a setback at an
early age, she learned to deal with her blindness. An adventurer at heart,
she wanted to travel the world. After completing High school at an Institute
for the Blind in Germany, Sabriye enrolled at the University of Bonn and
focused her studies on central Asia. She was the only blind student out of
the thirty thousand. With no Tibetan texts available in braille, she
developed her own method of translating the Tibetan language into braille.
It later became the officially recognized Tibetan Braille. Sabriye left
college to travel alone to China. She traveled on horseback from China
through rural Tibet and discovered a deep prejudice against the blind
children who were shunned and hidden away from the world. She talked to
parents about enrolling their blind children in the residential school she
planned to open in Lhasa. She persuaded them that their children, too, could
learn to read and write, and even ride a horse. Committed to bringing a
change in the lives of these children, Sabriye along with her partner, Paul
Kronenberg started Braille Without Borders (BWB), a nonprofit organization.
In addition to the school in Lhasa, BWB runs a vocational training centre
for blind adults with a farm and cheese factory near Shigatse. In 2009, they
also set up kanthari International at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India, an
educational and training institute, where they train social entrepreneurs
from various vulnerable groups with all the required tools and skills to
drive social change. Tune in to learn more about her social venture in India
and her story of courage, resilience, and determination!
