2023-09-10 Thread Rohith P
Hi friends,
I remember reading somewhere that in Canada, the government has made it
mandatory for all EVs to have some kind of sound for the benefit of persons
with blindness and low vision.
Maybe, something similar can be lobbied for in India too.
Cheers,

This is interesting indeed. Then think of those visually challenged
people who lack computer literacy. believe it or not, US much like
india has more visually challenged people who lack computer knowledge.

RE: [AI] TROUBLED BY SILENT E-vehicles

2023-09-10 Thread Naman Parakh
Most electric vehicles come with built-in speakers. My brother owns an Ola S1 Pro and has seen videos of similar vehicles that offer the option to use the speakers to simulate engine sounds. However, this feature is currently designed to be manually activated by the vehicle owner. If someone were to take this matter to court and request electric vehicle manufacturers to update their software to enable this feature by default and prevent owners from disabling it, that might solve the issue. One potential issue that I believe could still arise is the presence of older electric vehicles that lack speakers and advanced software capabilities, and even the electric cars equipped with cabin speakers. For this to happen, the entire production line would need to be modified for manufacturers producing speakerless vehicles. On the other hand, companies like Ola Electric would only need to make slight changes to their software. We should also note that requesting changes from companies on our end may not result in significant modifications because flexible software with more customization options is important for their sales to users.  Naman Parakh From: ilovec...@gmail.comSent: Sunday, September 10, 2023 9:46 PMTo: accessindia@accessindia.org.inCc: sayeveryth...@lists.sayeverything.orgSubject: [AI] TROUBLED BY SILENT E-vehicles Last week while I was crossing not so busy road I was hit by a two-wheeler and sustained minor injuries.  This happened despite waiting and observing for a minute or so before crossing. [AI] TROUBLED BY SILENT E-vehicles

2023-09-10 Thread ilovecold
Last week while I was crossing not so busy road I was hit by a two-wheeler
and sustained minor injuries. This happened despite waiting and observing
for a minute or so before crossing. I could realise the presence of that
vehicle only after I was hit. I have been crossing alone this road more
than ten years. These hybrid vehicles may create lot of problems for blind
pedestrians.

Can some individuals/institutes take initiative and do something?

2023-09-10 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa (Yoganathan Khandoo)
Hi Saurav,
This tutorial is more for demonstrating to sighted people how blind people use
Apple devices.
It does teach that the Command Options D combination takes you to the Doc, how
the Voiceover modifier is Control Options combination keys, and to turn on
Voiceover is Command F5. Other than that it is more for demonstrating to
sighted people, not designed to teach us how to use Voiceover as a specialized
goal of the video. Better to use Applevis website for that.

[AI] service animals

2023-09-10 Thread kanchanpamnani

An interesting article from The Washington Post Airlines tried to stop fake
service animals. It kept blind people off flights.

New Department of Transportation rules have made flying more difficult, and
at times, inaccessible to blind passengers

By Amanda Morris

August 28, 2023 at 8:00 a.m. EDT

Point Park near Reagan National Airport in Arlington, Va., on Aug. 12.

Elizabeth Schoen’s guide dog, Eva, is trained to help her navigate crowded,
chaotic environments such as airports. The black Labrador knows how to find
elevators, follow crowds to the baggage claim area and help Schoen, who is
blind, avoid obstacles.

But when Schoen, 21, of Arlington, Va., tried to fly to Boston to tour
graduate schools last March, airline staffers told her she could not take
Eva on the plane.

She is one of many blind people who say they have encountered more
difficulty taking service animals onto flights since new rules from the
Department of Transportation took effect in January 2021. The regulations
were an effort to crack down on a rise in passengers passing off untrained
pets as service or emotional support animals. Some travelers tried to take
 peacocks,

pigs,
 ducks and even miniature
 horses onboard aircraft. Some animals
defecated on the planes or attacked crew members, passengers and legitimate
service dogs.

The new rules state that emotional support animals are not considered
service animals and narrow the definition exclusively to properly trained
dogs. Airlines can require passengers to complete forms about their service
dog’s training at least 48 hours before their flight. Airlines also must
make a reasonable effort to allow all passengers with service dogs to fly,
even if they do not submit their forms in time.

Washington Post)

But disability advocates say airlines seem to be interpreting the
regulations differently, enforcing varying rules for submitting documents or
rejecting forms from other airlines’ websites.

Some passengers say their dogs have been rejected for simple paperwork
mistakes. The required forms also have been difficult to fill out, blind
travelers say, because they are often not compatible with the screen reader
technology people use to convert text to speech.

In interviews, blind people told The Washington Post that the regulations
are so difficult to navigate that they are now hesitant to fly or are
anxious about the experience. Various organizations for the blind are
calling for the forms to be changed or eliminated.

Department of Transportation data shows that the number of
service-animal-related complaints from people with disabilities have more
than doubled since the new regulations took effect. In 2018, the agency
received 116 complaints. In 2022, the number was 451.

The agency acknowledged that people with disabilities are experiencing
problems flying with their service animals and said in an email that it is
taking their concerns seriously and “has begun looking further into those
issues.”

“It’s a gigantic mess,” said Albert Elia, a board member at the National
Association of Guide Dog Users and a staff attorney at the Civil Rights
Education and Enforcement Center, a nonprofit legal organization focused on
disability justice.

Denied at the airport

Schoen originally tried to submit her form online four days before her
JetBlue flight, but it was rejected by the airline. JetBlue’s customer
service advised her to bring the paperwork to the airport on the day of her
flight.

When she arrived, airline staffers told her she had not submitted the form
on time. Schoen tried to explain that JetBlue needed to make reasonable
efforts to get her and Eva on the flight but was told that the airline had
the right to turn her dog

Re: [AI] Please tell me

2023-09-10 Thread Shahzada Saleem
hi ghanshyam,
I wanted to share some advice regarding the inclusion of
disability-related information in professional resumes. It's essential
to approach this matter thoughtfully, ensuring that potential
employers are informed while also emphasizing your skills and
abilities.
First and foremost, please remember that your skills and efficiency
are the primary factors that prospective employers will consider. Your
disability should not overshadow your qualifications, and if you
perform well, it is unlikely to be a significant concern.
However, for transparency and to help recruiters better understand
your situation, it can be beneficial to incorporate a brief note about
your disability in your resume. Here's an example of how I personally
included such information in my own resume so that you may get ideas
how you may include it? "An accessibility testing professional with
visual impairment aiming to create an accessible digital world for
every user. A Department of Homeland Security TTV5 certified trusted
tester."
This concise statement conveys your abilities with disability both.
also informing the recruiter about your visual impairment. This
transparency allows them to make any necessary arrangements or
accommodations to facilitate the recruitment process.
I want to reassure you that many individuals with disabilities working
for multinational corporations worldwide, including me. and your
situation should not be a barrier to your career aspirations. If
recruiters inquire about your disability, politely convey that it will
not impede your performance in the workplace. Highlight that your
approach to completing tasks may differ slightly, but you are fully
capable of achieving the same results as your colleagues.
If you feel comfortable, consider expressing your willingness to visit
the office in person to showcase your skills and work methods.
Face-to-face meetings can often dispel any concerns or misconceptions
and provide an opportunity to establish rapport with potential
employers.
Lastly, if you encounter any difficulties during your hiring please do
not hesitate to reach out again. There is a supportive community of
individuals willing to assist you in various ways.
Wishing you the best of luck in your new role!
shahzada.
