[AI] Regarding sports activities for the blind in Delhi

2024-05-02 Thread Avichal Bhatnagar
Hello list members,
As the subject line indicates, I would like to know that are there any
places in Delhi where the visually impaired can take part in sports and
adventurous activities?
In Mumbai, BGFI is doing good work in this regard, and we also have ABBF in
Pune; but are there any such options in Delhi?
If I suppose want to learn sound tennis, or do tandem cycling, where can I
find the resources for the same?
Thanking you
Avichal

2024-05-02 Thread Radio Udaan
Hi Prathamesh,

Thank you for your email and the reminder regarding proofreading. You're
absolutely right; it's crucial to ensure that our communications are
error-free, as even minor spelling mistakes can impact the impression we
give.

I appreciate you pointing out the distinction between "mental" and "mantle"
in particular. It's important to be diligent in catching these kinds of
errors, especially with the tools and technology available to us today.

I'll make sure to double-check all my communications before sending them
out in the future. Thanks again for bringing this to my attention.

RE: [AI] Whatsapp Accessibility (all platforms)

2024-05-02 Thread Yamuna Jivana Dasa
Hi all,

I’m writing here some quick feedback on my discussions with Birla Institute of
Technology And Science, regarding Whatsapp accessibility

Their research aims at presenting papers for consideration in future
development, although they are not directly involved in development itself.

Their focus is on general user accessibility as well as accessibility by those
with access challenges, not the latter alone.

We discussed how the acquisition by Meta has led to overwhelming communication
chat, messaging and status-level platforms all into Whatsapp. This overwhelms
also sighted and abled-bodied users as well.

Whatsapp for Android:

It was proposed by me that the problem of using the Voice Note button in a chat
results in the screen-reader reading out the latest message while the voice
note is being recorded, but that this seems to be resolved in the latest
Talkback on Android versions.

Long press on messages could include Emojis as a function to choose instead of
directly popping up the Reactions.

Access to Gifs and stickers could be made accessible by AI integration:

Images of people and objects could be described; TTS could be used to make
images of Text readable, and a combination of these two deployed in AI
integration.

Message Order: TalkBack reads messages in an unusual order, announcing the
message content, profile picture, then contact name, followed by their phone
number in a numerical format.

[I have not been able to replicate this from the chat window so could not
demonstrate the problem.]

Whatsapp for PC:

Keyboard shortcuts assignments for answering and ending calls could be natively
applied to the buttons for those functions.

Appologies for features that did not make it into this discussion. We ran out
of time and a future discussion was offered which I accepted. I also proposed
discussions with other interested Talkback users but was told they will
consider for future but for now a selection was made based on the forms
completed on their completed feedback request.

Kind regards,

Yamuna Jivana dasa

Hi all,

This morning I was contacted by researchers from Birla Institute of Technology
And Science, for a WhatsApp accessibility Usability learning session. Before I
commit my availability date for this discussion, I thought it would be best for
me to write to the group for feedback on your experience with Whatsapp
accessibility on the various platforms.

I do not know the level of impact of this organization on the future of
Whatsapp accessibility, so I cannot offer you any guarantees, but I figured it
would be worthwhile offering feedback to a large institution dealing with its
accessibility.

So, anyone interested in offering me feedback with any significant problems
with Whatsapp accessibility on any platform, please send me a private E-mail on
ykhan...@gmail.com

Please be brief and concise. Mention the following:

1. What platform your issue is related to: Android, IOS, Windows or MAC.

2.What screen-reader are you using: Talkback, Prudence, Voiceover,
Jaws, NVDA, Etc.

[AI] SOS Intervention needed : Disability & the 'Unfit' Parent in Temple of Healing adoption PIL (PLMI POV)

2024-05-02 Thread Vaishnavi Jayakumar
*Families for babies* or babies for families?

In recent hearings of The Temple of Healing adoption PIL
, the Supreme Court is compounding

flawed adoption policy by wading into what is reading increasingly like a
demand and supply scenario.

Also, just WHO is a 'fit' parent, anyway?

What is unfolding currently harkens back to historical missteps
 in
pursuit of the ‘best interests’ of the child - whether the Stolen
Generations of Australia

and North America
,
or closer home in Andamans

.

The unintended, potentially dangerous consequences of the decisions being
made currently will only impact groups with certain characteristics

- as per the November order that includes anyone indulging in substance
abuse (drugs or alcohol), having a criminal record, in need of care
themselves, mentally unsound etc.

Here's a viewpoint from one targeted group - persons living with mental
illness and their children.

*Because such voices should be at the heart of policy-making, we draw
lessons from Abirami (name changed), a mental health service user who now
works as a psychologist and peer leaderWhen she entered The Banyan’s
acute care service, she was separated from her 3-year-old son, who stayed
with relatives since hospital environment was not conducive for him. She
shares this period was an emotionally devastating experience and the
thought of permanent separation was terrifying; equally, access to her
child through visits immensely helped. Now, 15 years later, she believes
living with her son after coming out of the institution—with supports like
respite care, access to education and livelihood, cash transfers, and
conflict resolution—played a significant role in recovery.Abirami’s son,
endorsing this view, rejects the idea that parenting barriers are
exclusively linked to mental illness; instead, he focuses on prejudice,
discrimination and impact of deprivation. “While some situations may be
challenging, it is important for the child to be close to the parent to
feel a sense of belonging and grow up with confidence and stability,” he
addsResponses to these complexities must centre on the people most
affected by these implications. After all, we do not want well-intentioned
initiatives to alter societal perceptions around ‘fitness’ and infuse
feelings of fear in parents living with severe mental illness or their
children.*

Adoption and the ‘unfit’ parent: Nuance may serve us better

Deepika Easwaran, Vandana Gopikumar
Updated:1st May, 2024 at 1:06 AM

The Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) recently issued a memorandum

under which children whose guardians are found to be “unfit” due to mental
illness, among other conditions, are to be brought into the adoption pool.
It is in keeping with Section 38(3) of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, and
Regulation 6(18) of Adoption Regulations, 2022. Emotional and social gains
for the child and adoptive parents are innumerable. We only find the label
of ‘unfit guardian’ problematic and worry that vulnerable people,
particularly mothers with low social capital, may suffer irreconcilable
loss.

A global meta-study suggests 12–45 percent of mental health service users
have children. While the exact number is yet to be determined, it is likely
to be significant, considering the overall prevalence of mental health
conditions is estimated at around 14 percent. We are also a young nation
and it is likely that the parents of several young people may rely on
mental health services.

Because such voices should be at the heart of policy-making, we draw
lessons from Abirami (name changed), a mental health service user who now
works as a psychologist and peer leader. When she entered The Banyan’s
acute care service, she was separated from her 3-year-old son, who stayed
with relatives since hospital environment was not conducive for him. She
