it is demeaning if you hold your money before them without them

at least, that is how I think through my experience and understanding.

Now Your Friends And Family Can Offer You Personal Assistance Through Be
My Eyes

Read this email online

Hi Mahendra,

Be My Eyes is pleased to announce a major new feature called Be My Eyes
Groups!

For years we’ve heard from our community that not every person is
comfortable asking for help from an unknown volunteer, no matter how
kind. That’s why, starting today, Be My Eyes is offering a major new
capability to give blind people more choices.

In addition to our existing 7.1 million volunteers, now blind people
worldwide can also build their own custom network of people to help with
everyday tasks. Build your own trusted group of friends or family to
help with more personal and sensitive tasks you might not wish to share
with an unknown volunteer – it’s your choice.

Maybe you need a friend or family member to confirm a medication. Or
maybe you would feel more comfortable with a friend reviewing your paper
mail. Surely among 20 friends and family members someone would be happy
to help you out at the moment you need it. Now Be My eyes technology
makes that easy. Once you’ve assembled your trusted group, just press
the “My groups” button to connect with the first available person who is
known to you.

To create a new group, click on “My groups” in the Be My Eyes App
homepage and follow the instructions on the screen. After you have
created and named your first group, you will be able to send an invite
link to your friends and family members. You will find the link at the
end of the group creation process. Once you’ve assembled your trusted
circle, just press the Be My Eyes Groups button to connect with the
first available person who is known to you. You can enter up to 20
people in your circle and have up to 5 different groups on Be My Eyes.

When you’ve set it up, your group will always be there to help, in any
language you and your friends speak. And just like the other Be My Eyes
features such as standard volunteers, Specialized Help and now Be My AI,
our new Be My Eyes Groups feature is free of charge for non commercial use.

We’ll roll out Be My Eyes Groups worldwide beginning December 20th as an
open beta test to ensure it’s working well for our worldwide user group.
To access this new feature, just open the current Be My Eyes app and
click on the button marked “My groups” to start creating your individual
trusted group.

We welcome user feedback about the feature. Write to us at
i...@bemyeyes.com so we can continue to improve this service.

Learn more about our new Be My Eyes Groups feature in our new blog post:

to make life easier for visually impaired users

The new Touch Cards from Mastercard have
different-shaped notches cut into the sides to
help customers who are visually impaired find
the right card by touch alone. The Touch Card
credit card has a round notch, the debit card
has a squarish notch and the prepaid card has a triangular notch.

Mastercard

Approaching a register to pay for a morning
coffee, for many, probably feels routine. The
transaction likely takes no more than a few
seconds: Reach into your wallet, pull out a debit or credit card and pay. Done.

But for customers who are visually impaired, the
process of paying can be more difficult.

With credit, debit and prepaid cards moving
toward flat designs without embossed names and
numbers, bank cards all feel the same and cause
confusion for people who rely on touch to discern differences.

One major financial institution is hoping that
freshly designed bank cards, made especially for
blind and sight-impaired customers, will make life easier.

Mastercard will distribute its new Touch Card —
a bank card that has notches cutt into the sides
to help locate the right card by touch alone — to UU.S. customers next year.

"The Touch Card will provide a greater sense of
security, inclusivity and independence to the
2.2
billion peoplearound the world with visual
impairments," Raja Rajamannar, chief marketing
and communications officer, said in a statement.
"For the visually impaired, identifying their
payment cards is a real struggle. This tactile
solution allows consumers to correctly orient
the card and know which payment card they are using."

Credit cards have a round notch; debit cards
have a broad, square notch; and prepaid cards
have a triangular notch, the company said.

Virginia Jacko, who is blind and president and
chief executive of Miami Lighthouse for the
Blind and Visually Impaired Inc.,
told
The
Wall Street Journal that feature also addresses
an important safety concern for people with vision problems.

People with vision problems would no longer have
to ask strangers for help identifying which card they need to use, Jacko said.

The new feature was developed with the Royal
National Institute of Blind People in the U.K.
and VISIONS/Services for the Blind and Visually
Impaired in the U.S., according to both organizations.

Subject: [AI] Looking for someone building accessible websites

Â

Hi

Â

I'm looking to connect with somebody who builds
websites, and makes them accessibile, of course.

The person needs to understand they are dealing
with somebody who has no idea of what goes into
the entire process – should be able to make
useful, and consstructive suggestions, and be honest in the endeavour.

Would appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks

 Dear friends
Hope you are keeping well and safe.

Do we have braille assistive devices for smart phones available? How
 can
they be useful? A friend received some info about a Swiss company
 making
portable braille keypads that can be easily carried around. Do you
 think
such devices really help? I can ask him to share more information if
 this

Looking forward to hearing from you.

In delhi, the main problematic thing is that,
people use footpaths as a parking place.

Few months ago a public consultation was held

Hi Nirmal

I am interested in playing chess.

Before when I had better eyesight I used to play
on a normal chess board but now I am facing a
few problems while playing by touching pieces.
So I have a few questions regarding chess.

1. For playing chess we must observe all pieces
at the same time to visualise the next moves and
to play a good game which is not possible by
touching the pieces one by one. Also it is
difficult to memorize the position of all pieces every time after few moves

2. Many times a piece might fall down when we
touch which could hamper the game. So does the
chess board you are providing resolve this issue?

3. Do you know any app where visually impaired
people can play chess using voiceover or NVDA?

If you have suggestions regarding any of the
above mentioned problems please reply.

Thank you

Ruhin

Hello,

I am not someone who posts here regularly but I think I would be
abdicating my responsibility as a person with disability if I do not
state my views on the UP population bill.

At the outset, let me be clear that Sec 15 of the bill is ableist and
is discriminatory towards persons with disability. As Rahul observed,
the bill is giving legal credence to an ableist mindset that signals
to society that it is totally cool not to count your child with
disability as a productive member. As the discussion here has brought
out important points, let me restrict myself to a few observations.
To state that ableism exists on ground hence the ableist provisions of
the bill need no opposition is extremely problematic. That some of our
members have opted for a political submission rather than asking the
right questions and expose the ableism contained in the bill
demonstrates internalised ableism. The job of disability rights
activists (hoping that everyone participating here identifies as one)
is to oppose ableism on all fronts. The task at hand for us is to show
how the bill encourages an ableist mindset and humiliates the dignity
of persons with disability.

Secondly, to call any opposition to the bill as “privilege† is a
deliberate attempt to obfuscate the ableism in the bill. As a person
with disability, if I am talking to a poor person from rural UP about
the ableism in the bill, I am not being privileged. Put differently,
privilege is context specific.

Thirdly, the so-called pragmatic circumstances are continuously
evolving and are amenable to change. We are here because a few
individuals before us decided to change the ground reality and
pragmatic circumstances by striving to opposing ableism. What would
have happened if they had decided not to fight, because ableism is a
ground reality, right?

It is a matter of happiness that organizations like NPRD have come
forward with a clear position on this and hope more organizations join
them in this. We should rightfully demand the government to remove Sec
15 and instead focus on increasing life opportunity for persons with
disability. Rather than denigrating the dignity of persons with
disability, government should focus on measures which will encourage
parents to view their children with disability in a much more positive
light. Put simply, I would like my parents to see me as a person with
dignity and I would like every person with disability to feel the
same.
regards,
Tony

In fact, I am against ableism of all kinds: even when we are forced

to our disabilities as that is the norm in so-called able world, I am
strongly against this. I don't like the use of "normal" word to

Well this is exactly same what people have been thinking of a girl
child. At one point of time, girls were seen as a huge burden on the
society. Although Today the females have become quite productive and
important assets in almost every field, a section of the society still
seems to have the same attitude towards them. The same doctrine of
analogy can be applied here with respect to the people with disability
also.
Apart from the attitudinal problems, there's is yet another dimension
to it. Anybody, intending to have more children, can easily obtain a
medical certificate of even a minor disability and argue for another
child.

Sec. 15 of the Bill includes a terribly
pejorative almost eugenic rationale where the
Bill says that if couples have one or two
children who “suffer† (term used in thn the
Bill) from disability, they can have more
children and will not be seen to contravene the two-child norm.

Â

Notwithstanding, the other regressive and
contentious provisions in the Bill, this Section
seeks to invoke an ableist mindset and tends to
view the disabled as non-existent and equivalent
to being dead. This is atrocious and
unacceptable. Disability is a condition and one
does not “suffer† from a disability buy
but rather suffers because of it.

Â

The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act,
2016, which the Bill invokes has equality and
non-discrimination as its guiding principles.
This provision in the Bill is a blatant
violation of these principles and reinforces the
concept of viewing children with disabilities as
a burden, unwanted by families and society.

got the idea of developing an app that shows the
way as to how tech can become more accessible to
people with disabilities. While seeking help
from a sighted friend to book a cab, Bhargava
wondered if he could create a mobile app that
allows visually impaired users to use popular apps with just voice commands.

“Louie, in a way, is all about solving my own
problem, and with the hope that it will work for
other people as well,† said Bhargava, the
creator of ‘Louie Voice Control’.

rise of assistive tech: How tech is helping people with special needs

Bhargava visualised a mobile app that could be a
‘virtual friend’, doing interactions like
humans – something he himself wished existed for
booking a cab or sending a WhatsApp message.
While the idea of a mobile that lets blind and
visually impaired use commonly used apps and
controls the phone with voice commands had a
potential, Bhargava initially struggled to get
developers on board. But once he secured funding
from Sequoia Capital, Bhargava recruited his own
developers and started working on the app. His
team now consists of 14 people, including three
visually impaired developers who are in the area
of testing as well as user experience.
