It varies from organization to organization. in Big organisations like IBM/Oracle Software engineers mostly concentrate on actual software development like Oracle/ Solaris what ever it may be. They don't concentrate on Infrastructure required for software development like work stations or servers etc etc. if Software engineers face any issues related to their work stations sw staff need to approach help desk people. Some times they I mean help desk ppl will help to you to solve your problem otherwise you need to go for helpdesk engineer or they call them as service desk personell.
