 Hi all,
Just wanted to let you know that a mainstream product HEALTHSENSE PS 121
is

a good option for a talking weighing scale for the visually impaired.
I have bought it online from Amazon and it is working properly.
It is listed on several online retailers at prices around Rs. 1000. At
times

 it goes out of stock.

Just stand on it and it will tell your weight in a loud and clear voice.

 Best,
 Prashant

I believe that this mail is not just an expression of opinion rather
assault On a genuine effort of Avinash!
Avinash's contribution is wonderful in my opinion...
Such assaults do discourage genuine people from contributing to the

This mail is indicative of conservative and sick mentality of

Re: [AI] Making Mumbai Disability friendly city

2015-06-26 Thread Sumathi
I don't think we can achieve this in India.
since most the politicians are just for making money and don't have any
humanatarian considerations either. I don't want sympathy. But by looking at
the present trend in the present government's activities, I see they are here
just for making money and I don't think they will consider any of our requests.

If you can, try to get footpath first. where no vehicles are allowed and no
poles are interfearing our walks. that is the first stage, in my opinion.

Development for the Physically Challenged in Mumbai DP.

Ofcourse implementation is a separate issue, and we should take it up once
the DP is passed. For now, I would like to take all suggestions and
opinions of anyone and everyone to make sure we are able to make a decent
 draft.

We are referring guidelines of Delhi and other cities around the world.
However experience of local residents is most important and that is
something we would not like to miss.

So please give me your suggestions. I also need help, reaching out to
groups of other disabilities, to seek their suggestions. It would be great
if any of you can help me do that.

Hmmm. I'm not convinced totally with IRCTC people yet. They have introduced a

This showes that they need to be trained more.

as a matter of fact, there are 2 capcha codes: one on log in screen

however, if you select check box which says i will book as handicap,
you receive OTP on your registered cell and thus a VI individual can
 book reserved ticket independently.
i have booked two tickets today and i received OTP without any hitch.

I use the blues2 from aftershocks. These are bone conducting and so, sit in
front of the ear and so, both your ears will be free and not just one.

These are chordless and accessible for setting up and so on. If you use the
blindsquare app on the IPhone, these have a nice integration with the app so
you can operate the app entirely using the headset buttons instead of the

I kindly request people who are all willing, please join together and

hundred trainees and nearly ten projects were running. I think the
 present
regional director is being inactive and not taking any efforts for
placement or even for introducing new projects.

Kindly don't think I'm discouraging you, But the bluetooth headsets are taking
some milliseconds time for activating the commands. I got one from sony and the
quality of the headset is wonderful. the only thing which is bothering me is,
it's taking just a millisecond for accepting the commands. As per the jabra, I
got a bluetooth speaker. which has audio guidance as well. so the brand is
really nice and accessible.

I have been using the Jabra headset with the iPhone for over a year now and
am extremely happy with it. It is a Bluetooth headset; most laptops come
with Bluetooth and this shouldn't be a problem. Unlike most Bluetooth
headsets, this sits over the ear and is therefore comfortable to wear for
long hours. Each charge lasts for about five and a half hours. It comes with
in-built voice recognition and accepts voice commands.

Subject: [AI] Whither Justice? By Anand Teltumbde

Justice is a far cry today. The judicial process has been hijacked by
the wealthy and the powerful. Witness the course of Salman Khan's hit
and run case, or the net result of J Jayalalithaa's disproportionate
assets case, or, in sharp contrast, the situation of a
wheelchair-bound professor who took up the cudgels on behalf of the
oppressed, confi ned to an anda cell in Nagpur Jail, unable to get
bail.
http://www.epw.in/margin-speak/whither-justice.html
Anand Teltumbde (tanand...@gmail.com) is a writer and activist with
the Committee for the Protection of Democratic Rights, Maharashtra.

This court has become a safe haven for big criminals.

— The Supreme Court bench of
Justice B S Chauhan and Justice S A Bobde1

The Preamble of the Constitution of India, containing among other
things “justice, social, economic and political”—surely the most
important assurance to common people—paradoxically, is getting
distanced at an accelerated pace as we traverse the “developmental”
avenue. This first page of the Constitution has become a bitter satire
on the Indian people, and Part IV of it, “the directive principles of
state policy,” that further emphasise how the rulers should rule this
country, a dead document except for its provision for “the holy cow.”
The majority, the poor, constitutionally the owners of this country,
crave for justice while the rich commit crime and roam scot-free as
VVIPs. The entire judicial process stands hijacked by the moneybags as
admitted by the highest court of the land:

We are sorry to say that the court’s time is being used by senior
advocates and big criminalsWe can say on oath that only 5% of the
time is being used for common citizens, whose appeals are waiting for
20 or 30 years.2

Unfortunately, the hijacking is not confined to time alone; it goes
far deeper into judicial prejudice against the poor and the oppressed
that need justice the most. While this leg (the judiciary) of the
state may be said to have performed better than the other two, the
legislature and the executive, or rather appears so because the people
helplessly rely upon it, justice surely has been the casualty. This
can be glaringly seen in the cases of Dalits, Adivasis and religious
minorities, resulting in a denial of justice, and in the cases of
politicians, big ticket criminals, corporate fraudsters, leading to,
from their point of view, fair play.

Two judgments, not unusual as such, but which came in quick succession
last month, namely, Salman Khan’s “hit and run case” illustrating the
plutocratic influence on justice and J Jayalalithaa’s
“disproportionate assets case” insinuating the influence of politics
on justice, delivered by two high courts in different states, surely
strengthen this dictum.

Salman versus Saibaba

“Bail is the rule, not an exception” is the guideline by the Supreme
Court in granting bail to undertrials. But how this precept gets
differentially applied by courts is widely known. The big-ticket
lawbreakers engage high-profile advocates who manage to get them bail
even before they are arrested or immediately thereafter, and then
stretch the period as long as possible, as in the case of
Salman. By the time a verdict is delivered, many of the witnesses
would be dead or made to die, and whatever incriminating evidence
existed is diluted or destroyed beyond retrieval. The least said about
the investigating agency, the police, in this context, the better.
Salman, the Dabang of Bollywood, while in a drunken state, drove his
Toyota Land Cruiser without licence into a group of people who were
sleeping on the pavement in the wee hours of 28 September 2002. One
person was killed and four others were seriously injured. He fled the
scene and was later arrested from a lawyer’s house. Though booked for
“culpable homicide not amounting to murder,” he got bail and lived as
a celebrity for the next 13 years. When eventually he was convicted
and awarded five years of imprisonment, within hours the Bombay High
Court, where ordinary mortals have to wait for years to see their case
on board, heard the plea of his lawyers and granted him bail with
supersonic speed. It is not the bail per se but the manner in which it
was granted reveals the attitude of the judiciary towards the rich,
and conversely, disdain for the poor.

Contrast this with the case of G N Saibaba, a wheelchair-bound
professor in a college of Delhi University with 90% physical
disability, who until a few years ago only crawled on his hands and
perhaps cannot even survive without assistance, is being denied bail
repeatedly despite public concern for his failing health. Years

The Supreme Court issued notices to the Central Government and all
other State Governments directing to strictly implement and monitor
the various beneficial provisions to disabled people under the Persons
with Disabilities Act, 1995.
The bench headed by Justice Dipak Mishra was hearing an application
filed by the Justice Sunanda Bhandare Foundation which pleaded that
there should be an effective monitoring system for the implementation
of the Disabilities Act for it to not merely remain on paper. The plea
states that a majority of citizens belonging to this category have not
got any relief even two decades after passing of the rules under the
Act. It is based on the petition filed in 1998 by the Justice Sunanda
Bhandare Foundation that the apex court has been issuing directions
and orders for the welfare of differently-abled citizens.
The petitioner, represented by lawyer Ambar Qamaruddin argued that
“Even in last year’s order, the court had said all measures had to be
taken positively by the end of 2014, but nothing had happened”.
The directions issued by the apex court previously were with respect
to reservation of 1% of identified teaching posts for disabled, jobs
in private sectors and PSUs, seats for students in universities and
creation of peculiar facilities for such citizens at public places
like railway station and bus terminals.
In its March, 2014 order, the apex court had directed the Governments
that all measures be must be completed by the end of 2014. In its
order, the court sent out a humane message highlighting the need to
protect the disabled people in our country in the following words:
“The beneficial provisions of the 1995 Act cannot be allowed to remain
only on paper for years and thereby defeating the very purpose of such
law and legislative policy. As a matter of fact, the role of the
governments in the matter such as this has to be proactive. In the
matters of providing relief to those who are differently abled, the
approach and attitude of the executive must be liberal and relief
oriented and not obstructive or lethargic. A little concern for this
class who are differently abled can do wonders in their life and help
them stand on their own and not remain on mercy of others. A welfare
State, that India is, must accord its best and special attention to a
section of our society which comprises of differently abled citizens.
This is true equality and effective conferment of equal opportunity.”

It's always recommended to back up your datas while going for recovery. As
far to my knowledge, it'll bring back to factory defaults. Which means, like
how your computer/laptop was at the time of purchasing it.

What is the use of recovery disk? will it bring the windows to its

You know there are very small holes for ventilation purpose in the place
where the fan is placed. You can make use of a vacuum cleaner and suck the
dust out of it. I use my vacuum cleaner even cleaning for keyboards and

Subject: Re: [AI] insensitive rickshaw drivers in Pune

Narendre,

Thanks for bringing this up. In Mumbai, the situation is more or less
similar. I use to commute to and from work by rickshaw. However, my
observation is that the rickshaw guys are generally becoming difficult
at times, not just targetting us as visually challenged. In fact,
because of not being able to get a rickshaw on my way back from office
which in fact happens to be at around 4 in the evening (non peak
hours), I switched to B E S T travel.

There, we cannot be denied envrey neither do we have to worry about
finding a seat and seldom to worry about where to get off once
familiar with the stops on the way, not to mention the feasibility of
commute by bus.

Sometimes, the idea is to make the commute convenient and spending on
rickshaw may be necessary but when the guys act nasty, taking the next
best option might just be the right thing to do.

Bang opposite my bank, there is a rickshaw stand and not too further
off is a bus stop. Usually a known rickshaw man would drive two others
and me right to my doorstep However, after a few days, he would allow
me to sit in the rickshaw but I had to wait for two or three other
commuters to come so he could claim a share from each person. I began
to realise that the wait was getting too much. Instead of reaching
home in 10 to 15 minutes, which would have ideallly been the reason
for taking a rick, I reached home in half an hour. Apparently, all
other rickshaw drivers refused saying that the only man who would
agree to drop off at my area of residence was the guy who ran the
share rickshaw.

The next evening, after waiting around for ten or so minutes and being
refused by other auto guys, I headed to the busstop. As I was stepping
into the bus, the rickshaw guy called out saying that the others had
come and that there was a seat for me. But, I had made up my mind.

This, however, has temporarily taken care of my situation, but as you
say, there are times, when I would wish to choose commute by auto when
I am carrying shopping bags and stuff. Also, during monsoon days, when
a rickshaw drop home is obviously preferable.

The problem here seems to be about them choosing to drive customers to
their preferred destination rather than have us dropped where we wish
to go. This is the case even in case of sighted customers. But, since
commute poses more challenges for us, let's certainly hope to
sensitise them.
Regards,

Payal Jethra

All,

I planned to purchase a cordless telephone for BSNL connection. Could
anybody suggest me any good brand of cordless telephone. With all good
features the receiver should get the frequency of BSNL connection in
long distance also. i.e., the receiver should work in maximum distance
also.

Another thing I would like to know is whether cordless telephone with
talking caller ID is available in the market.

Hi,
Sumathi,
In my humble opinion, the mentioned price is more than its worth.
Jayachandran,
If talking guidance facilitated codelesses are these expensive, I
would suggest you to purchase a regular one. This would ensure
mainstreaming, and when its layout is once sufficiently familiarized,
there should arise almost no requirement of sighted assistance.
Can any Sparsh Products or Saksham executive comment on the
availability of a talking guidance facilitated model in India?
Thanks.

2015-05-20 Thread Sumathi
It's better to use recovery DVD. it's simple and faster to bring back your
windows to factory defaults. Before doing anything, make sure your boot
priority is DVD first boot device. For which, you need sighted assistance.
Go to the bios by hitting the relevant key like f2 or escape or for some
devices, it'd be the delete key.

Subject: [AI] Cordless Landline telephone

All,

I planned to purchase a cordless telephone for BSNL connection. Could
anybody suggest me any good brand of cordless telephone. With all good
features the receiver should get the frequency of BSNL connection in long
distance also. i.e., the receiver should work in maximum distance also.

Another thing I would like to know is whether cordless telephone with
talking caller ID is available in the market.

Hi Uday,
In my personal Opinion,I will not recommend you
Dr.Natrajan.He would take your Rs 1500 bucks and tell you that there's no
treatment currently. He would give you spiritual lectures and tell you to
believe in God etc.It may happen that people in Shankar netralaya would
tell

you to undergo a surgery and might put oil in the eyes.Dont ever fell into
such trap and make your decision by consulting a lot of people rather in a
hurry.
IWish him good health and this is completely my
personal opinion.

[AI] State bank calendar.

2015-05-14 Thread Sumathi
Hello friends,

Whether anyone of you got success in selecting the exact date with the state
bank calendar? I was trying to enrole with that policy which was recently
introduced. In which they were asking for the moniny's date of birth. I tried
my level best to give the date of birth of my nominy. But I'm unable to get
success with that. Is there any work around for that?

Thanks in advance.

Hey there, one more to include,
It is applicable only for persons who are not covered under any other
social security scheme.

Some more to add
PMSBY : Prime Minister Surakhsha Bima Yojana- All savings bank account
holders having 18 -70 years of age is eligible- insurance premium Rs
12/- per year payable yearly-: claim on accidental death Rs 2 lac and
Rs 1/- lac on permanently disability.

PMJJBY:, Prime Minister Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojan - All savings bank
account holders between age group of 18-50 years age are
eligible-Premium yearly Rs. 330/-- amount of claim is Rs 2 lac on
death.

Both the policies can be taken. It is booked with bank branch or Bank
Mitras. Service tax is exempted. Life insurance cover is less than 1/-
per day and accidental cover is on 1/- per month. Both policy premium
is around 94 paise daily.
It is social driven scheme for all citizens.
It is most suited to drivers, home servants even to beggers and down
trodden people of aiciery as the amount of premium is very less
One can donate the amount by giving this policy which will be great
gesture towards poor person. Just donate as derive immense pleasure in
life, provided they have SB a/c or you shall instigate to open one
for them.

Hi, all the banks are offering this project, as this is under Prime
Minister and not of any individual bank. Even the co-operative banks
have to promote these scheme. Both of the schemes offer insurance. One
is a life insurance which also covers natural death and the other is
an accidental insurance which covers any kind of accidental death. The
sum insured in both the plans is for 2 lakhs. If you have a joint
account, the second account holder can be the nominy, but it cannot be
towards eachother for the same account.
