Re: [AI] want to know about available places for scanning book for visually impaired

2016-01-02 Thread Prathap Vasu
Dear friends,

First of all, Thanks for your quick response. My intension is where
one can scan the book at cheapest price. Scanning a book which has
around 1000 page costs rs. 3000. I use to scan book for my CBSE UGC
NET preparation and other competitive exams. Not only for exam
purpose, out of my own interest I use to scan book for general reading
purpose. if one or two book the above mentioned cost is bearable but
I use to scan book more often. is there any standard rate
for scanning book for visually impaired. To be cost effective, I am
exploring what are all the option available for visually impaired to
scan books at cheapest price. Venkataraman Nagarajan sir mentioned
about worth trust for scanning book. My motive is what are all the
places or centers available for scanning book for visually impaired at
cheapest price And what the cost would be. With in a month I plan to
scan a books for upcoming exams.
Thanking you

[AI] Announcing Techshare India 2008 Road Shows - Breaking the barriers for people with disabilities

2008-07-14 Thread Vasu
Did you know that 1 in 4 people have visual impairment? Did you know 1 in 4

With emerging technologies, innovation has no bounds. Technology is an

In a country where it is considered that almost 10% of the world's disabled

include them in the main stream. Today, a visually impaired person can work
with computers using a screen reader! Isn't that wonderful? But many of us

needs of people with disabilities and how can technology be helpful in
meeting those needs.

Re: [AI] question pertaining to jaws

Hi Geetha,

The steps you have listed help silence access keys for dialog box controls
like buttons, combo boxes, etc and menus, not the keystrokes input by the
user. As far I understand, Chetan wants to silence keystrokes pressed by
him.
Chetan, if you find my understanding correct, follow the steps listed below.
A word of caution before that:

Caution: If you are not sure of the keystrokes you press, it is advisable to
run with Typing Echo set to Characters or any option other than Off till the
time you are not confident about the keys you press from the keyboard.
Choose to turn Typing Echo Off only when you are well conversed about the
keyboard layout and your finger movement on the keyboard.

1. Open JAWS by pressing INSERT+J.
2. Select Utilities > Configuration Manager.
3. Press ALT+S to open Set Options menu.
4. Select User Options from the Set Options menu to launch the User Options
dialog box.
5. Press TAB (probably twice) to navigate to Typing Echo, which provides
four radio buttons listed below.
a. Off - JAWS stops announcing user inputs from the keyboard.
b. Characters - JAWS speaks the letters input by the user. This is selected
by default.
c. Words - JAWS doesn't speak letters, but speaks a word formed by the
letters when you press SPACEBAR or ENTER.
d. Both Characters and Words - is a combination of characters and words. It
means JAWS speaks the letters when input as well as the word formed by the
letters when you press SPACEBAR or ENTER.
5. Use Up and Down arrow keys to locate the Off radio button.
6. Activate OK button to confirm selection and close the User Options dialog
box.
7. Press CTRL+S to save changes to default.jcf.
8. Close Configuration Manager by pressing ALT+F4.

Hope this helps..

Re: [AI] Suggestions requested for the convention

2008-07-02 Thread Vasu
Hi,

Another thought is to a discussion on what is the kind of training and
services would be needed to generate more employment avenues and how NGOs
can get help from experts in this regard. It may help lots of NGOs to
upgrade their existing services and more people with disabilities would
benefit from career prospective.

Just my thoughts.

Re: [AI] your thoughts on braille

2008-06-04 Thread Vasu
Sorry to differ but here is my personal view.

Braille is certainly one of the accessible formats. No doubt I believe in
technology for 100% but there are lot of ways where Braille could be of
immense help. For instance, to identify the bottles of medicine or buttons
in a lift, Braille labels would be of great help though there is expensive
technology available for this.

This is my personal view and no means to offense any one.

Vasu

Re: [AI] Clickable links not working

2008-05-14 Thread Vasu
The keystroke to access OnMouseOver links is CTRL + Insert + Enter (CTRL +
Enter for Jaws 5.0 users)

...then JFW announces the text changed at a particular line. Press J to pull
the jump to line dialog box and type the line number and hit enter.

PS: Most of the OnMouseOver links will consist of sub menus.

Hi Niraj,

Good to see you in the AI Mailing list. I guess this must be your first
email to the list. Also, I feel you have some problem in using email. I
observed that you have written your email content in the subject line and
rather at the message body.

Also, your message is incomplete and difficult to understand. If I am right,
are you asking about the person who got the Award recently? If so, Recently,
Shivani Gupta of AccessAbility got Cavin care award.

Please do write to us if you need any help in using the mailing list. It
would not be send this kind of mails to any public mailing list.

Feel free to call on my mobile if you need help. My cell number is 992 022
9081.

Harish, if I am right, this Niraj is just joined the group and he is a
physiotherapist.

Let's try to help him out to see good writing in the future from him.

What version of jaws are you using?

I suspect this issue could be related to your sound card. Try upgrading the
soundcard drivers. If that fails, either change your laptop or, get an
external USB soundcard.

Regards,
Srinivasu

I too had the same problem, but rarely.
Try using disc clean up and defragmenting your computer. Make sure you
delete all your temporary internet and local files, I dont mean delete your
other files any where but a file like "abc.tmp"
Once you defragment see whether it works fine.

Sorry, that option would not be there. Try the following process.

1. Go to Tools menu and activate Internet options
2. Press CTRL + Tab and go to Security Tab
3. Activate Custom level by pressing Alt + C
4. Arrow down to Display Mixed Content
5. Turn on "Enable"

However, am not sure whether it is secure to use and hence I feel it should
be prompted.

JAWS may work if the error is ignored but not very well. Particularly, if
one wish to use Outlook, it does not read the list items in a folder. So
better to find a solution.

If share components are uninstalled, JAWS will come up with a video
intersept error message when it will start after it's reinstallation.
Activate the details button and then activate the execute button. If you are

using jaws version 8 or above, you can ignore the error message and still
work. Hope this helps.

Re: [AI] Question regarding forms mode

2007-12-06 Thread Vasu
Hi,
To turn off the forms mode, use Numpad plus (while numlock is off) for
desktop and for laptop use JAWS key + ;

Also, try using Insert + F5 if you can find the send button in forms list
dialog box.

Subject: [AI] Question regarding forms mode

Folks:

I tried using my yahoo mail to see how accessible it is. Though it is
generally working fine, I have a problem in sending mails --When I keep
forms mode on and type the messages and addresses and press tab, I don't
see the send button. However without keeping on forms mode, I noticed
there was send button. Since I don't know how to keep forms mode off
after typing the requisite info, I was unable to send messages from
Yahoo. I found this very annoying, as I could locate send button with
forms mode on in g mail. How do we approach this, any idea?

A talking library for the blind
Wednesday, 28 November , 2007, 11:44

Kozhikode: Libraries are silent zones and it is no different at Farook
College near this Kerala city. But sometimes in its quiet ambience you may
hear a
voice reading aloud in English in an accent that is not native.

Don't be perturbed - it is the Digital Talking Book Library.

The college, located about 15 km from here, has installed this facility at
the library for the benefit of visually challenged students and aptly named
it
'Insight'.

'Insight' helps 32 blind students at the college to delve into the vast
world of books without the help of Braille. The library has four computers
to help
such students.

The facility consists of a few computers, a scanner and a set of speakers
and also headphones. Through voice prompts it also helps the user operate
the
computer.

"Visually challenged students find it very useful. They spend hours at these
machines reading books and periodicals," said M Ayub, the librarian.

"Its operation is simple. You have to just scan the pages you want to read.
The computer will convert it into sound bytes. The students have learned to
operate the system and they are doing it without help from others," he
added.

The gadget looks ordinary, but the software may baffle you.

"We are using the software Jaws and Kurzweil to operate these systems," says
Habeeb C, a guest lecturer and a former student of the college, as he
operates
the system with astonishing ease. He is visually challenged.

He has played a key role in encouraging the authorities to install the
facility. A brilliant student and a winner of scholarship from the
Foundation for
Academic Excellence and Access (FAEA), Habeeb had been familiar with this
system from his student days.

The talking library has also come in for praise from a UGC review committee
team, which recently visited the college.

"They said they haven't come across such a facility in any other arts and
science college in the country," said the librarian.

The college is also planning to provide more help to the visually
challenged.

"We are planning to bring out compact discs of lectures and to install a
printer which can print scanned materials in Braille. The printer is costly
and
it has to be imported," adds Ayub.

Farook College, affiliated to Calicut University, is run by the Rousathul
Uloom Association.
