Can you please elaborate initiatives taken by such organisations in
respect of empowering Visually impaired bank employees, specially at
 there work place?

 Greetings from NAB Helpline

Interactive WORKSHOP ON EMPOWERING STRATEGIES FOR THE
 VISUALLY IMPAIRED BANKERS

 Dated: October 11, 2014

Venue: NAB, Sector-V, R.K. Puram, New Delhi

 Background:

Now visually impaired persons are employed in banking sector and they are
performing well in their job profiles. On the other hand there are many
visually impaired employees who have recently joined the banking sector
 and
are encountering challenges at their work place. NAB Delhi Assistive
technology helpline intents to provide a common platform to visually
impaired bankers for sharing their experiences and empower them to
 overcome
 following persisting challenges

 1. How to reduce Inaccessibility of CBS package with screen reading
 software.

 2. How to enhance availability of assistive technology tools and
 software's.
 3. How to educate ill-informed incharges, which results in
underutilization and misutilisation VI staff rather on jobs.

 Present Scenario:

Organizations working for blind people had taken initiatives to empower
visually impaired bankers at their workplace but there is considerable
 scope
that needs to be streamlined in this direction. It has been observed that
many visually impaired persons after joining banks are EITHER not aware
about job profiles that are suitable for them, or they succumb to the
apprehensions of their colleagues who are not aware about the enabling
technology available for the blind persons.

 Innovative Step:

 1. The Assistive Technology helpline of the National Association for the
 Blind
Delhi will conduct the second workshop in this series on 11th October
 2014
from 2.30 PM to 5.30 PM. Visually impaired bankers and IBPS qualified
candidates are invited to participate in this workshop.

 2. This interactive session on empowering strategies for young visually
impaired bankers intents to provide a platform to share the
 opportunities
available for visually impaired persons in banking sector.

 Who can attend?

 1. Visually impaired bank employees.

 2. IBPS/SBI qualified candidates aspiring to join bank jobs.

 Line of Action:

Demonstration and Discussion on following topics will be held in this
 interactive session

 1. Possible job profiles for VI bankers

 2. Challenges in different job profiles

 3. Empowering tools.

 4. Tips on accessing bank packages with screen reading software.

 5. Overcoming barriers.

 6. Success stories.

 7. Banking instruments such as Bank cheques and Demand Draft, from
 bankers
 point of view.

Please register for this workshop before 4th October 2014 with the NAB
Helpline by email or phone. There is no fee for participating in this
workshop. No accommodation or reimbursement of travel expenses will be
provided by NAB Delhi for this workshop. Please hurry, only 35 persons
 can
 be accommodated in this event.

Smartphone technology made even more inclusive

*The focus of smart phones is all around the touch screen which can be a
bit challenging for visually impaired people.*

*Smart phones do have great access features but not everyone can master the
touch screen navigation.*

Telorion aims to offer the ease-of-use of a traditional mobile phone with
buttons along with the advanced capabilities of a smartphone.

Telorion is a French company on a mission - Smartphone technology made
even more inclusive

*Jackie, blind user*

*“I am so pleased to see Telorion become available. For people new to
Smartphones and touchscreen technology, it is extremely daunting, and
Telorion is just what is needed to help those individuals. For those of us
who are used to touchscreen phones, Telorion is still an excellent tool for
doing things quickly and while on the move. It is incredibly difficult,
even with experience, to type on a touchscreen while travelling or taking a
call outside. Telorion gives everyone the kind of tactile feedback we
thought had gone for good”!*

Telorion has designed two specific interfaces:

Telorion Vox http://telorion.com/en/vox/ designed for blind users, is a
talking phone with a keypad. Through an elastomer overlay delimiting the
keys of a keypad and a completely vocalized interface, Telorion Vox is
quick and easy to use.

Telorion Zoom http://telorion.com/en/zoom/ designed for partially sighted
users, offers several features to make the reading experience really
comfortable (magnification, colour themes, flexible vocalization).

*More than 30 functions and applications* can easily be accessed on both
versions through simple list menus:

*Communication* functions: call your contacts using voice shortcuts,
dictate SMS, listen to your emails.

*Utilities*: follow the talking GPS, keep your appointments with the
calendar, save an alarm, notes, or voice recordings, listen to the weather
forecasts.

*Multimedia*: listen to music with the MP3 player or to your favourite
Daisy book with the Book Reader, listen to the radio or to the newspapers,
browse the web by dictating your Google search.

*Vision Aids*: take a picture and save a description or recognize a barcode
using the Camera, read a letter using Optical Character Recognition or the
electronic magnifier, choose your clothes thanks to colour recognition,
find which lights are on with the light sensor.

Telorion is seamlessly integrated with the Android platform. Users can
benefit from the native Android Talkback screen reader and access the whole
Android environment, including the 600,000+ apps available on the Google
Play Store.

@Jadav:
No need for someone to come and all, there is a clear cut circular
which states regarding the facilities to be availed for the VI which
the individuals can show. This circular is also with all the banks. If
the individuals show the circular copy, then the respective bank
branches can cross check it with the refference number. If this method
doesn't work, then the individuals can directly visit the respective
bank's website and can file a clear complaint to either the bank
complaint desk by mentioning the branch name or with a step ahead can
also complain the omboodsmen. However, the ultimate fact is that, no
banks can reject/prevent the facilities for the VI... Some banks
follow the rules and facilitate atomatically, whereas few require such
awareness...

Re: [AI] BBMP's death trap blind man walking -Bangalore Mirrorwith pictureI
have to be very clear that neverever I accused Enable India, my accusations
were/are in general terms to NGOs. Surely as you say, enable India should have
played a proactive role, I meant only that. There are many NGOs working in the
disabled sector, the path to their premises are totally inaccessible with
potholes, electric poles, drains, etc., on which such NGOs have not cared to
act by taking up with local authorities. When NGOs can organise huge
functions/meetings, there is absolutely no reasons for not acting in this
regard. Praising NGOs for good things is worthwhile, also they have to face the
critics for not acting on many fronts. Those heading NGOs always speak for
the NGOs. - Original Message -

Perhaps Enable India could have and should have requested authorities to
cover the drain in front of their office. Having said this, I would
emphatically state that it is wrong for us to accuse Enable India to simply
be interested in taking donations and grants. Do you know the background
and kind of the work Enable India does? It has become extremely fashionable
for people to loosely hurl criticism on NGOs. I would like to state here
that Enable India is responsible for a number of our blind friends today
taking up fairly paying jobs in the Private sector. Their training
programmes are of high quality. They not only have setup skill development
programmes but also are constantly working out work place solutions.

To generate high quality training programmes, you need good quality
professionals and to hire and keep high quality professionals, you need
funds. Enable India is doing good work and need to be appreciated.

Again I say, it is definitely within our rights to point out that Enable
India could and should have played a proactive role in closing the drain
in front of their office but certainly none of us have the right to accuse
them of being being merely donation/grant focused. Let us be mature in our
statements. Access India is a public forum and we must be responsible with
  our comments.

AICB CELEBRATES THE 70TH BIRTHDAY OF MR. J.L.
KAUL

Dear friends,

With immense joy and cheer we take pleasure in sharing with you an
important moment in the life of AICB. Today, Monday, 28th July, 2014,
the beloved leader of thousands of visually impaired persons and our
founder Secretary General, Mr. J.L. Kaul is turning 70.
As is well known, for more than 47 years, Mr. Kaul's personal life has
been synonymous with his complete commitment and dedication to the
work for the blind. With only nine other persons and a meager three
hundred rupees (less than five dollars in today's context) with him,
Mr. Kaul had the indomitable spirit to form a national organization of
the Blind, namely, the All India Confederation of the Blind. Today
AICB is a widely acknowledged name both nationally and internationally
owing to Mr. Kaul's single minded devotion and hard work. The efforts
of this unique man, who is in office for ten hours a day 365 days a
year without taking any benefit or
honorarium from AICB, have been recognized the world over. Among
several distinctions with which Mr. Kaul has been honoured are the
first Marga Schulze International Award in the year 2006 and the Louis
Braille Medal (the highest international distinction conferred on a
person committed to work for the blind) by the World Blind Union in
2012. Recognizing Mr. Kaul's commitment and contribution to the work
for the blind and the difference he has made to the growth of social
sector in India, the Government of India honoured him with Padamshri
this year. Such national recognitions are accorded only to a handful
of individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the country.
The honour was conferred on Mr. Kaul by the President of India in a
grand State Function on 31st March, 2014.

AICB celebrates Mr. Kaul's 70th birthday today at 2.30 pm in-house
in a simple manner.
As Mr. Kaul cuts the cake that day, he would no doubt remember all
those who have stood by him and AICB in moments of both tribulations
and triumphs. We are sure you will join us in your thoughts in wishing
Mr. Kaul a long and happy life.

With gratitude for your continued support,

Sincerely Yours,

AICB Family.

Subject: [AI] CPI(M) Stand on the Disability Bill

Dear All
We all must thank CPI(M) and Sitaram Yechury who demanded for refering
RPD Bill to the Standing Committee yesterday and represented the
legitimatd demands of majority of persons with disabilities. we should
not forget disabled have no representation in either of the houses.
and if Seitaram sir has not raised this demand our lives would have
been in peril. what we want debate and discussion in the parliament
on RPD. isn't disability a national issue? formost India should
legislate its law on disability in harmony with UNCRPD which current
law has intentially ignored.
Now attempts are on to vendalise and attack CPI(M) Office, we all
should unite to condemn such attempts, and lets be united to fight
against such individuals and groups who for scoring political points
are hastening RPD Bill for passage which has countless inadequacies.
Many thanks to Sitaram Yechury and CPI(M)
JNU blind students and scholars are greatly indebted to CPM and
sitaram Yechury who became the powerful voice of the disabled in the
Rajya Sabha.
We hope CPM will not succum to any pressure exerted by some of the
politically motivated groups and individuals.

Dear Syamala gidugu,
This is in connection with your concern about the cpim's position re
the rights of persons with disability bill which you expressed to me
in the telephone conversation we had yesterday. You said that the
government had agreed to twenty amendments to the bill jointly worked
out by the disability sector and that therefore the bill should be
passed without any delay instead of sending it to the standing
committee as suggested by the cpim.
I believe you are completely misinformed. The government did not move
any of the amendments which had been unitedly suggested by the
disability sector.. Not a single one, except for changing the date on
the bill!
When the bill was introduced in the house, without any of the official
amendments, the parliamentary group leader of the cpim, com sitaram
yechury, asked for it to be referred to the standing committee.this
reflected the opinion of the disability sector. It had been unitedly
agreed by all those involved in the struggle for the bill that if the
government did not accept the minimum non-negotiable amendments, the
bill should not be passed.
I would request you to kindly verify the facts before taking public
positions. if this had been done much of the subsequent confusion
regarding the bill on the part of a few of the organisations who were
wrongly informed that the amendments had been moved, when they had
not, could have been avoided.it was entirely wrong on the part of the
government to introduce the bill without the amendments.
I would like to reiterate what I told you on the phone, the pressure
should be on the government to move the official amendments on the
floor of parliament, in the few days it has left of this last session.
The onus is on the government, not parties like the cpim who have been
uncompromising in their wholehearted support for the disability rights
movement. In fact it is only because of the strong stand taken by the
cpim that the government could not push this flawed version of the
bill through. we have provided another opportunity to force the
government to bring the amendments.
having been personally involved with the movements for justice for the
disability sector for many years and having as a member of the rajya
sabha, ensured the first detailed discussion on disability issues
demanding a bill based on rights, in the rajya sabha I can assure you

Dear colleagues,

Let me first express my gratitude to you all for remaining united on the
issue of Bill on the rights of Persons with disabilities. I would like to
share with you with happiness that our joint efforts have yielded results
and the Bill introduced by the Govt. has been referred to the Select
Committee signifying our victory. I now proposed that we should have a
joint meeting of all the representatives of different disabilities to
examine the Bill as referred to the Select committee and formulate our
common stand on each clause of the Bill. I intend to do it in the first or
second week of the March, 2014 in consultation with you all. IN view of
this I have decided to suspend the NFB's agitation which was initiated on
28.1.14.

With regards,

All the friends and activists in Disability sector,

 Dear colleagues,

As one of the activists in the sector like you all I am sending this
 mail
to apprise you with the development on the issue of Bill on the rights
 of
persons with disabilities and also would like to share some of the
 concerns
which every committed activist in the disability sector needs to pounder
and decide for himself and herself the future of disability movement.

To begin with may I draw your attention to the fact that some activists
 and
particularly DRG activists campaigned for introduction and passage of
 the
Bill on the rights of persons with disabilities without even caring to
 know
its contents. This probably is the most damaging part of the activisms
where advocacy is undertaken around such an important issue viz.
legislation on the rights of persons with disabilities without knowing
 its
contents beyond the comprehension of any prudent person. On the other
 hand
my organization did not approve of this approach and instead started its
efforts to obtain a copy of the Bill as approved by the Cabinet before
taking the position. As soon as I could obtained a copy of the Bill as
approved by the Cabinet and took a position that this Bill in its
 present
form should not be introduced. I also simultaneously decided to
 initiate
an indefinite agitation against this Bill and wrote a detailed letter to
the then Minister for Social Justice Empowerment along with
 suggestions
for change in the Bill. I also circulated this letter along with the
