i pay a total respect to the cane and never meant that it signifies a
weapon. it is a symbol of strength for us. it never means that we gonna
attack somebody with it.
thanks a lot that you all suppport this movement. except moderator who
thinks that it is off topic. may be an age old middle class mentality.
anyway i do not wanted any discussion onto this which my earlier mail also
indicated. accessindians very well know which are the topics to be avoided.

[AI] News in times of india crest edition

2011-02-27 Thread himalaya singh Rawat
Dear friends

a very interesting article by chidanand rajghata in crest edition of times
of india!

read it below.

There is a piquant story about the late Indian Communist leader EMS
Namboodiripad, one of many famous people (Tiger Woods, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis
Presley among them) who was prone to stuttering. A reporter once asked EMS
if he always stammered (stutter and stammer are the same). "No, only when I
speak, " EMS is said to have joked, presumably inducing a momentary stammer
in the witless reporter.

India remains a cruel society to people with disabilities. As it is, we are
one of the most discriminatory societies on earth, victimising people on a
range of biases from religion and caste to color and wealth etc, but the
plight of a person with a disability is rough in a hungry society. An
aggressive, combative, predatory population on the make has no eyes or ears
for the slightest incapacity. Oh sure, there is the occasional pang of
individual pity and concern, but as a collective, we have little mindspace
for them. It shows in our films, on our roads, in our buildings, and in our
books.

Which is why a film like Aamir Khan's Taare Zameen Par, which addresses a
minor disability like dyslexia, was a very small step in redressing the
unsparing cruelty Indian society and film industry has inflicted on the
impaired and disabled. From caricaturing cripples and hunchbacks to
parodying the stuttering and the deaf, there isn't one disability
Bollywood's brain-dead scriptwriters haven't made fun of. Maybe TZP will
induce a new sensitivity, but don't count on it. It is after all a
reflection of the society we live in.

Another common disability is getting plenty of attention these days thanks
to the movie The King's Speech, which centers around an English monarch's
struggle to overcome a stammer. Colin Firth's performance as King George VI
has made him top contender for an Oscar for best actor, but even if he
doesn't nail it, the movie has touched on a fairly common impairment. Even
in a country that has made giant leaps in addressing disabilities, the film
has been embraced by the Stuttering Foundation of America as "rare
opportunity to teach the widest possible audience about the complexities of
stuttering, and the availability of treatment and support. "

As with most disabilities, stuttering is also much misunderstood and
maligned. Some 68 million people worldwide - one per cent of the world
population - is prone to stuttering. Demosthenes, the father of rhetoric,
and Moses, the patriarch prophet, are among the earliest known stutterers.
Down the ages, brilliant minds (Darwin, Newton, Churchill, etc) and
beautiful people (Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman Hugh Grant etc) overcame what
is at best a minor growing-up wrinkle that can be easily fixed, rather than
treated as a handicap.

In fact, the term handicapped itself is in disfavour these days. It comes
from Elizabethian Age, when people with disabilities were ejected from
hospitals and shelters for the poor and forced to beg and given a cap in
which to collect alms (hence handicap ). Today, the US is among the few
countries that is a leader in easing the life of the disabled, an American
example worth emulating instead of the many tawdry practices we follow
blindly.

It wasn't any different from India even up until 50 years ago. Like with
much of the western world, treatment of disabled ranged from seeing them as
sinners possessed by evil (from ancient times to the 1800) to regarding them
as genetically defective or inferior (1800s to 1970s). As late as 1824, the
Commonwealth of Virginia passed a state law that allowed for sterilization
(without consent) of individuals found to be "feeble-minded, insane,
depressed, mentally handicapped, epileptic and other. "

The decision removed all restraints for eugenicists, and probably muted
American criticism of Nazi excesses, although by this time Roosevelt had
become the first person with a serious physical disability to be elected U.
S President. Although Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act, establishing
federal old-age benefits and grants to the states for assistance to blind
individuals and disabled children, he himself continued his "splendid
deception" of concealing his disability from the American public.

It was only in the 1960s that Washington moved to seriously address the
disability issue. The American National Standard Institute (ANSI) published
American Standard Specifications for Making Buildings Accessible to, and
Usable by, the Physically Handicapped. The landmark document became the
basis for subsequent codes. The Urban Mass Transportation Act of 1964
required public transport vehicles to be accessible to elderly and
handicapped persons.

By the 1990s, there was such broad acceptance of the disabled as a part of
the national fabric that Bob Dole's paralyzed hand was never an issue in his
presidential bid in 1996. A society that celebrated the English physicist
Stephen Hawking (motor neuron d

Dear Santosh,

commendable effort from all of you but please make these things clear to all

1. from where is this course affiliated.

2. in such a short period how will you give knowledge of anatomy and
physiology, computers and spoken english?

3. how would students of any stream be able to learn all these?

4. you make it clear that students passing out of your course are not called
doctors. i am writing this because persons who have done a one or two year
diploma in physiotherapy call them as doctors, which is in clear violation
of the law of the land.

5. will the students be able to open their own spas or health centres? as
per my knowledge they are required to obtains some licence for this?

6. what sort of training infrastructure do you nave at your place? please
indicate the full details of the course.

answers to the above question would enlighten all of us in the list. it will
help the prospective students and the rehab professionals in sending
students to your organisatin for their bright careers.

thanks

2010-10-02 Thread himalaya singh Rawat
Dear students

please note the following points

1. if students from other universities can come and do internship at your
organization why cant you do?? ask this question to the Director.

2 in every institution where you do the courses internship is also allowed.

3. NIVH doesn't require anybodies affiliation to run this course. it is an
autonomous body. Have you heard ever that IIT is recognised by any
university/UGC?? does an elephant need recognition from a dog ??

4. if you dont get patients at your organization then tell the course
coordinator and everybody to come to you and get treated. it needs some
effort from you my dear. do some publicity.

5 you can always open a clinic under the supervision of a BPT/ MPT.

all those who need help in this matter contact me. please put this mail
infront of the the honourable director.

[AI] AVAST antivirus

2010-08-28 Thread himalaya singh Rawat
*Dear Access Indians,

Here is what you have been discussing for long. I am pasting peters writup
about AVAST. hope this works for all of you.

Accessibility does not just mean access by everybody to Information and
Communication Technologies, it also means access to everything available
through ICT. It is not sufficient that applications and websites are
accessible, it is important that tools, widgets and add-ons are also
accessible. The importance of tools being accessible has been highlighted by
AVAST Software's recent announcement that it has upgraded its avast!
anti-virus program to be fully accessible to the vision-impaired.

Many users of screen-readers, such as JAWS®, had been attracted to avast!
because it included an audible alarm when a virus was detected, in addition
to the pop-up window. In this way users were made aware of the alert,
without JAWS losing focus on their current task, allowing them to deal with
the virus alert at a time convenient to them, in just the same way that a
sighted user could.

Essentially this meant that the day-to-day use of avast! was accessible. The
problem was that the installation, configuration and operation was not
accessible and the user of a screen-reader was dependent on the help of a
sighted user for installation, configuration and any special operations
(e.g. requesting an immediate scan). People with vision impairments want to
be as independent as possible and not impose on their friends or colleagues
when it is not essential.

The push for this development came from vision-impaired IT geeks who wanted
to use avast! Antivirus 5.0. "For the blind, the computer is an absolutely
fantastic invention. And for some, it's even their hobby to adjust it," said
Radek Seifert, work-team leader at the TEREZA Center, a support centre for
the sight-impaired at the Czech Technical University in Prague.

These volunteers fine-tuned avast! so it worked with JAWS. "They said, ‘give
us the beta' so we did," remembers Ondrej Vlcek, AVAST Chief Technical
Officer. "It was also a complicated issue on our side as avast! does not use
the standard Windows controls."

The user interface for avast! needed to be changed in two ways:

   - All functions had to be accessible using the keyboard, this is a
prerequisite to being able to use JAWS. It has a beneficial side-effect that
users who cannot, or prefer not, to use a pointing device have full access
   as well.
   - All the textual information had to be provided to JAWS in an
   accessible, logical and consistent manner.

AVAST developed a new framework for the user interface which means that
other products and new versions will automatically be JAWS friendly.

All through the development the new functions were tested and improved by
the vision-impaired geeks thus ensuring that it was not just accessible
using JAWS but that it was easy to use with JAWS.

avast! 5.0 was generally available in January 2010 and the new functions
came in an update in August 2010; with the new framework the next version of
avast!, planned for January 2011, will be accessible at GA.

It is great to see a company reacting quickly to user pressure for
accessibility. It is also good to see that the vision-impaired community was
actively involved in the development and testing of the new product.

The products should now be accessible to all disabled users, including those
with hearing impairments and muscular-skeletal impairments. It is also
available in 11 languages so making it easily accessible to users who prefer
not to use English.

I hope that other developers of tools, widgets, add-ons and applications
will take note and produce fully accessible versions of their products.

Re: [AI] feedback required on ANGELTalking Pocket Daisy Reader

2010-07-24 Thread himalaya singh Rawat
hello all,

to get an answer for the quality of angel player open it up and the answer
comes in front of you.

1. the battery is certainly not good quality.

2. doesnt play daisy books properly.

3. who gives the technical support, what is the website, manufacturers
address?? no body knows

4. the circuit board inside doesnt looks of indias.

5. medium wave and short wave radios are certainly no no for this type of
device,

users who are using this player can throw more light on this, but my
suggestion is dont go for it.

Re: [AI] Committee to draft new disability law.

2010-05-06 Thread himalaya singh Rawat
Dear rahul, kanchan and all,

The new law may take some time to come but all of us who are pressing
for making society liveable for us, must know that ninty nine percent
of the problems which we are facing is due to the lack of the
awareness among the general public.

if we incorporate the issue of disability in school and college
curriculum then i dont think we would need shaving each others lawful
heads and unnecessary traffic on this list.

[AI] An answer to wayfinder access??

2010-03-29 Thread himalaya singh Rawat
Motorola Milestone comes with lifetime free access to voice-guided
street-level maps of 401 cities in India

The Moto Droid was launched in USA last year with Google Turn-by-Turn
navigation,
it’s not available in India as of now. But Motorola has joined hands
with
local maps company MapMyIndia to offer lifetime free access to fully
voice-guided street-level navigable maps of 401 cities in India

This offers voice-guided navigation and routing in the cities and across
major national and state highways. With this the Indian consumer can drive
to 400,000 towns and villages and explore over one million points of
interest like budget/premium hotels, petrol pumps, eating joints, ATMs,
hospitals as well as tourist and religious spots. All the consumer needs to
do is to launch ‘India’ maps from the MOTONAV application to enjoy an
unparalleled navigation experience. The GPS navigation service is free with
no activation or data charges, independent of mobile networks and can be
used even without inserting the SIM card, as the maps are fully loaded on
the MILESTONE

It sounds really cool and would have been cool if Moto bundled the phone
with a Car holder.

Re: [AI] separate judiciary

2010-03-23 Thread himalaya singh Rawat
Dear rahul and all,

I have heard about disability related module for I A S officers while they
go through their initial training. if something like this is incorporated
and we have separate benches for disability related cases then we can reach
to some amicable solutions. judges judging the cases may not be only from
judiciary but from the field specific.

a court where the disabled can fight for themselves and argue for their
cases. there must be awareness and understanding the grave issues at hand.

Shalini: do you know that CCD's havent got great power in hand. he can not
do anything more than issuing a letter. you are well aware how long does it
take to get even a reply of emails from CCD office. going through the
channel is the language of the generation of the past and of those who want
the issues to be in oblivion for uncertain period of time, its bureaucratic.
what channel would you give me if we do not have even books even after more
than sixty years of independence. i am not saying that blow the system out
but a quick and amicable solution at the earliest.

it is for sure that you have not been to the lower courts of different
states. the image of court is getting better but the real situation on the
ground is pretty different.

[AI] accessible gps comparison

2010-02-19 Thread himalaya singh Rawat
dear list member. i found this useful info. i believe these could be brought
to india and only way finder access is not the solution. in this world of
technology newer and newer things come and go.

Accessible GPS Comparison by Mike May

Since, as the saying goes, "Not one size fits all", it is good that there
are 7 accessible GPS systems now available to blind and visually impaired
people. Sendero Group has established itself as the Rolls Royce of
accessible GPS since its first product release in 2000. Mike May, Charles
LaPierre, the Sendero team and its partners, have expanded Sendero GPS to
three platforms. It is no longer a question _if a blind person should have
GPS but a question of _which GPS to have.

A primary consideration is the type of user interface, both for input and
output. Is a keypad, Braille keyboard or QWERTY keyboard best. All the units
have speech output and some can also have a Braille display. A Braille
display increases the price considerably.

What other applications does the user want besides GPS and does he or she
already have an accessible PDA? If so, there is just one GPS for each of the
PDAs and that makes the decision simple both in terms of convenience and
affordability.

The following bullets are meant to represent the distinguishing factors
between products. There are certainly many benefits of each of the products
not mentioned here. Other comparisons and product flyers are available to
learn about all the features. These are some distinguishing highlights.

Questions to ask yourself when evaluating the various accessible GPS
products:

Self, what keyboard do I prefer or can I get used to?

   1. The QWERTY options are: VoiceNote QT or BrailleNote QT
   2. The Braille keyboard options are: Voice Sense, Braille Sense,
VoiceNote mPower BT, BrailleNote mPower BT and BrailleNote PK

Self, would a Braille display be valuable to me and can I afford the
additional cost?

The options for a Braille display are: BrailleNote BT or QT and Braille
Sense.

Although an outboard display can be added to a mobile phone or Voice Sense,
this defeats the purpose of a small portable device and is not recommended.

Self, portability is important. What are the devices from smallest to
largest and what are their distinguishing features?

   1. Mobile Geo on a Windows Smart phone with keypad interface, (powered by
Sendero GPS. 15 million points of interest, the smallest GPS device and
completely self contained. Since you have the phone anyway, adding the GPS
software adds no size, only cost to the equation. No monthly fees for the
GPS. Geo has the full power of Sendero's comprehensive software with
LookAround capabilities. It is the only GPS with vibration alerts in
   addition to speech output.
   2. Wayfinder Access on a mobile phone with keypad interface. This is also
small and self contained on a Symbian phone, mostly made by Nokia. The
software however is not nearly as full featured nor automatic as Geo and
there are fewer points of interest. Monthly data access fees apply. It has a
visual map display and fast route calculation.
   3. Trekker Breeze is a self contained easy to use unit with 9 keys. It
does not provide automatic routing to commercial points of interest nor to
specific addresses. All routes must be recorded manually by walking or
driving the route and then retracing it. Under 2 million points of interest
in North America. Uses a Sirf 3 GPS receiver. 1.1 pounds.

dear all,

i just wanted to share one very good thing with you all. it is a very short
term but very useful. its DIY. DO IT YOURSELF. we have to have a do it
yourself thing for this grave situation. if subhash chandra can set up a
government in colonial times why cant we decide our own laws and regulations
now. i would support a full throttle movement on this. lets come out and
burn the books which are not acessible.

god is said to help those who help themselves. our government goes one
better than god. it doesnt even help those who help themselves but
implicitly urges them to continue the good work and keep helping themselves
. so we have to help ourselves, make laws and keep the good things rolling
on.

what say access indians???

while googleing i found this info.

MOBILE COLOR RECOGNIZER AND LIGHT
DETECTOR<http://www.abledata.com/abledata.cfm?pageid=113583&top=0&productid=174771&trail=0>
The Mobile Color Recognizer and Light Detector (MCR) is a light detection
and color identification program designed for use by individuals who are
blind or have low vision. This software works with Mobile Speak and Mobile
Accessibility cell phone display readers (see separate entries) to enable a
camera phone to function as a color identifier and light detector. It works
with almost all Symbian series 60 phones. With this software, the phone can
be used to determine the color (or different colors) of an object and the
level of light. The program can also detect multiple colors and describe the
location of different colors in a multi-color object (for example, "top
green, left light blue"). The colors which can be identified are white,
gray, black, yellow, orange, pink, red, green, blue, brown, and purple, as
well as light and dark tones of these colors. The software can detect four
different levels of light: bright, normal, dim, and dark. To use the
identifier, the user points the camera on an object and the software will
tell the color and / or the light level. COMPATIBILITY: For use on Nokia
3230, Nokia 3650, Nokia 3660, Nokia 6260, Nokia 6600, Nokia 6620, Nokia
