Re: [AI] Assistance for visually challenged in Air India international flights.
In general, Prior to travelling / while booking the ticket, person must request accomodation. Certainly, it is mandatory for the respective airlines to provide requested accomodation for the disabled individuals. As for as the convinient of the person who is traveling tomorrow, I can give some tips from my personal experience. First, once she reaches airport, ask the person to request help from the gate agent to take her to the respective airlines e.g., Air India, right? Once, she reaches air India, she can ask the agent to help her in filling out the forms e.g., forms that indicate that you are leaving India. In the meantime, they will also help her to weigh her baggages. After getting this paper procedures done, she can seek their support to complete leaving formalities and security check as well. After security check done, air indian agent will take her to gate from where the plane takes off. Till the boarding time starts, she can wait and again Air India agent will come and take her in to the flight and make her seated. During transits, respective airline agents will come and take her and help her to get the transit security checks done. Before she arrives at U.S. port of entry, flight agents will help her to complete some paper works in the flight itself. Once she arrives at the port of entry, air prort agents will help her to get the baggages and take her to get immigration and get her through. After completing immigration, she can ask her to leave outside the airport gate or ask them to take her to domestic flight ( NOTE: it is depending up on her final destination). For the smooth travel, ask her to request wheel chair accomodation, if she has not done that yet. and it is much easier for first time travellers. Please feel free to ask any questions / clarifications. Hope, it helps. Thanking You. But advise your friend to contact the airline in advance. She may still get required assistance, but according to international law, airlines need to be notified 48 hours in advance and as a government owned airline, air india is a bit crazy at times. Re: [AI] Assistance for visually challenged in Air India international flights.
Hi Vamshi, Though Mr. Ramdoss has given detailed steps where the traveller would receive or require help, It would be worthwhile to just read the DGCA's CAR (Civil Aviation Requirements) on Carriage by Air of Persons with Disabilities and Persons with Reduced Mobility. You will appreciate that these Guidelines were framed after thorough interaction with the Disability Sector in which my organisation Svayam had also actively participated and are quite friendly to the disabled. However, often due ot ignorance on the part of users, these guidelines are not followed in totality. You can find the latest DGCA CAR on the subject on this link: http://dgca.nic.in/rules/car-ind.htm After click on this link, you will have further locate Section-3: Air Transport followed by Series M- Passenger Facilitation part I. For ready information I am attaching the same in PDF to all those who responded to Vamshi's mail. I reiterate, please ask for help and it is readily available. Generally you have sufficient number of staff that assist you with formalities and also once you have checked in, a staff is assigned to you until you board the aircraft. Once in the aircraft, you have the cabin crew who help you out. Just raise your hand until the staff locate you or you can ask fellow passenger also to call for the cabin crew. Currently there is no button available to indicate to crew that you need help. Similarly on arrival, the staff will help you with mobility and other clearance till you reach out of the exit. Hopefully she will have people to receive her at the airport in US. regards On 17 June 2010 01:18, Adhimoolam Vetrivel Murugan vadhimoo...@gmail.comwrote: But advise your friend to contact the airline in advance. Re: [AI] Assistance for visually challenged in Air India international flights.
Additionally, the Air India website has only this page which has some advice for Blind passengers travelling on International flight. I am copying the page hereitself, lest you get lost in the inaccessible website of AirIndia: Source: http://home.airindia.in/SBCMS/Webpages/International---Passengers-Requiring-Medical-Attention.aspx?MID=27 # The following instructions pertain to medical clearance and fitness to fly. Kindly complete all details of MEDIF (Medical Information Form) while making your booking. Most people with existing medical conditions are able to fly on a commercial aircraft without difficulty. However on flight the cabin air is pressurized and precautions are sometimes needed if you have a respiratory or heart problem. Medical clearance is required if - Fitness to travel is in doubt as a result of recent illness, hospitalization, injury or surgery. - You have an existing unstable medical condition. - Special services such as oxygen or the use of medical equipment onboard is needed. - You are traveling for medical reasons or treatment It is recommended that you check any vaccination requirements at least six weeks prior to your departure and carry adequate travel insurance to cover any medical costs incurred abroad. Most medical cases are straightforward, but others require individual assessment. In some cases, you may be asked to travel with a medical escort or with supplementary oxygen. Your fitness to fly is based on internationally accepted criteria, the aim being to ensure that you have a safe, comfortable and uneventful journey. Medical Clearance Unit If you have a condition that may affect you in-flight, please contact the nearest Air India office directly or your travel agent, for assistance in obtaining the required Medical clearance. Medical clearance is only considered upon receipt of the Medical information (MEDIF) forms. Cabin pressure *Passengers Requiring Medical Attention:* The cabin air pressure could cause a drop in oxygen in the blood. This is not a problem for most people, but a passenger with respiratory problems (such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)) may need to book supplementary oxygen. A request for the same needs to be made at the time of booking your flight. Post operative care Flying after an operation or a serious illness can be stressful. It is wise not to travel if you don't feel up to it. Post operative care Flying after an operation or a serious illness can be stressful. It is wise not to travel if you don't feel up to it. Traveling with medicines or medical equipment - It is advisable to carry the medication you may need during the flight in your hand baggage with the prescription. - Medication cannot be refrigerated on board. If medicines need to be kept cool, a cool bag or vacuum flask may be appropriate. Kindly discuss options with your pharmacist. - If traveling with medical equipment please advise Air India in advance, as clearance will depend on the type of equipment. - Medical clearance is required for the use of most medical equipment including nebulizers (used in some cases of asthma) and ventilators. - Equipment must be capable of being battery operated as it is not possible to guarantee power supply on-board our aircraft. - In normal circumstances, medical equipment which has been authorized can be used on board except during taxi, take off, approach and landing. Nebulizers Battery operated nebulizers can be used in-flight with the exception of during takeoff and landing. On Board Seating Safety regulations stipulate that passengers with additional needs should not be seated at emergency exits or in cross aisles that form part of emergency exit routes. Seats most suitable to the passenger’s needs will be allocated. Seeing –Eye dog/Passengers with impaired vision Seeing eye dogs may be carried free of charge if the dog is trained to lead the blind passenger or a passenger with impaired vision and dependant on such dog or the passenger has impaired hearing and is dependent on the dog, provided this is medically established or supported. The dog if properly harnessed and muzzled, may be permitted to be carried in the cabin but cannot occupy a seat. An advance request must be made at the time of booking. A meet and assist service can be provided, if assistance is required at departure and on arrival. If you are not capable of taking care of all your physical needs independently on board, we request you to travel with a companion who can assist you. The airline will not be responsible for providing on board assistance which may contravene health, safety or hygiene requirements. All individual country regulations for carriage of a dog must be met with. Wheel Chair Request In keeping with the requirement of Air Safety, carriage of passengers requiring wheelchairs assistance has to be restricted on our
