[AI] Buying a Laptop

2010-02-22 Thread Vicky Singh
Dear Sir,

I think it is better to go for a laptop with 4 GB RAM and also an
expandable slot of 8 GB RAM. Primarily 2 GB might be sufficient today
but may become obsolete in 6 months time when Office 2010 or higher is
launched. Also one / two years down the line, Microsoft may come out
with a new OS which require 4 - 8 GB RAM. Unlike desktops, it is not
possible to feedle with configuration of laptop due to space
constraint. Hard disks can be supplemented from outside using
external hard drives but external RAMs are not in vogue.
Further I expect a laptop to remain functional for a minimum of 4 - 6
years before planning to
buy a new one.

Regards,

VS

Re: [AI] Buying a Laptop

2010-02-22 Thread Pamnani

Amit,
I think you should look at the netbooks forget about the notebooks.
The netbooks are cheaper. They have enough power to run all the applications
we want. They are easy to carry and dont trouble your back. A lot of
accesindians are suffering from back trouble. If you can live with a small
keyboard then please go for the netbooks-the company and model numbers dont
really make much of a difference.
I dont really think that you can wait for 6 years to change your hardware-I
think every 3 years makes sense therefore a cheaper model is better.
I currently use an assus prior to which I used to lug a heavy dell around. I
dont travel anywhere without the assus but I used to hate carrying the dell
notebook.

Its not macho anymore so dont worry about being seen with a small cute toy.

[AI] Buying a laptop

2007-04-26 Thread Sudhir R \(NeSTIT\)
Hi folks !

A student doing her second year degree course in Kerala is planning to purchase
a laptop immediately. The laptop should be able to serve her requirements at
least till she completes her PG which implies, if I guess correctly, it would
need to be compatible to Vista and Vista-based applications, even though she
may be running it on Win XP for the time being. Kindly advise the features one
needs to incorporate from this forward compatibility angle.

Specifically, will it need a 64 bit processor ?

Since most of the Vista's much-touted graphics will be lost on us, is there any
need for 1 GB RAM or Direct X.10 compatible Graphics card right now ? And,
can we settle for a smaller screen size (12.1 inch) as it makes little
difference for us ?

Would appreciate if you could share your experiences with various brands and
configurations, specifically with performance, ease of operation and after
sales support points in mind.

Thanks in advance and regards

Re: [AI] Buying a laptop at Hyderabad...

2006-12-06 Thread Subramani L
Dear Harish:

For my benefit and for the wider benefit of the list, can you appraise
us on the price points of laptops available. Because, I was intending to
buy a laptop last year, believing HP's add of a laptop for Rs 29990, but
it turned out the additional expenses, such as the OS costs were
excluded from that and I had to drop the idea since the laptop would
finally cost Rs 42,000.

Hi Sudhir
I can help her get a better deal at Hyderabad.

But let her settle for the model. For that budget one could get a good
system.

There are so many considerations, keyboard layout, weight, Battery
backup
time etc which are of individual preferences. I would suggest she has a
look
at it herself. I suppose performance should not be an issue, for, all
the
laptops in that range are good.

 Dear friends,

Reem, who is doing her first year PG at CIEFL, Hyderabad is planning
to
buy a laptop to better facilitate her studies. She wants to finalise
a
configuration, make and model based on her limited budget (around Rs
40
k), availability of service (preferably onsite, since she has mobility

problem) at Hyderabad, and the fast-changing hardware and software
 scenario.

Kindly share your experience with the various makes of laptops,
especially
if you have purchased one recently. You can also kindly provide
contact
info of good, reliable vendors at Hyderabad to help her get good
quotes,
proforma invoice (for a bank loan) etc.

Please treat this as urgent since she wants to finalise before the end
of
 Dec, 2006.

 Thanks and regards
