rosy.seque...@timesgroup.com Mumbai : Bombay high court said the Reserve
Bank of India must consider an expert committee's suggestions and
recommendations for making currency notes and coins friendly for the
visually challenged. "It is high time the Reserve Bank of India considers
it,'' said Acting Chief Justice Sanjay Gangapurwala and Justice Sandeep
Marne on May 3. They heard a 2019 PIL by National Association for the Blind
(NAB) to direct RBI to introduce "blind-friendly" currency notes/coins as
the new currency and coins are difficult to distinguish on touch. In
September 2022, RBI said Delhi HC had constituted a committee. On May 3,
RBI's advocateDhaval Patil said the report had not yet been tabled. "There
cannot be any dispute that the currency and mints have to be disabled
user-friendly,'' they said. They noted that after the PIL was filed, RBI
came out with some measures and introduced coins that are "visually impaired
friendly" and a mobile application. Advocate Uday Warunjikar, for NAB, said
there are some issues with operating the app with regard to volume and the
app does not work in crowded places and on trains and buses. "Respondent
(RBI) certainly has to take steps so that the visually impaired persons can
distinguish the currency. In fact, as the committee was already appointed,
we are waiting for that report, because the same would be the suggestions
and /or recommendations ofthe experts," they said. The judges directed that
no sooner the report is received, it must be submitted to the court or else
they proceed with the matter on the basis of petition and replies as "the
matter cannot be adjourned in perpetuity". They also sought a reply on the
shortcomings in the app and posted the hearing on June 23, "as a last chance

On March 7, 2019, the Prime Minister had release a set of coins comprising
Rs20/-, Rs10/-, Rs5/-, Rs2/- and Rs1/-. All of them are distinctly different to

Re: [AI] Consider report for making coins friendly for the blind'

2023-05-10 Thread 'Saravanan K' via AccessIndia
Currency plays a vital role in our life. Now we are in a position
which we have to depend on sited persons to know the value of it.
Everybody knows that a decade back, we are aware of different sizes
of coins such as 5, 10, 20, 25, 50 paisa coin available. but now they
are not in use. They have different structures & anybody can easily
recognize them without any hurdles. Now technology has improved. Along
with that, complication also drastically increased. How much the app
will support us. Think, when we are in a crowd. Is it possible to
take every note or coin & check with app. If you are having
approximately more than 10 notes or coins, is it seems good to take
each of them & check with app. Why government is not thinking of this
matter. It is only feasible to check less than 5 notes or coins. But,
If we are having currencies in olden days, we can manage ourselves
without depending on others. I request you all to throw light on this
matter. I strongly emphasis to follow the old style of having
currencies based on their shapes.

Regards.

RE: [AI] Consider report for making coins friendly for the blind'

2023-05-11 Thread Kanchan Pamnani
I think I need to clarify.

1. I copied a Times of India article about a pending case in Mumbai by
the NAB regarding coins etc.

2. The Bombay High Court Judges were informed by RBI that they are
waiting for a Report.

3. This is the report on which amar and George have worked as a part of
the Delhi High Court matter.

4. So the Bombay High Court matter will rely on this report. I have
explained to Amar how it will really work.

5. We cannot do anything further at this stage unless this report is bad.
It is currently out of our hands and no point in now commenting.

6. What the newspaper article also said was that the Bombay Court has
asked for a report on the ap for recognising currency. So I presumed that it is
referring to Mani.

7. Only Harish has commented about this Ap. If we have to help this
matter and ourselves then we must do a proper evaluation and send it to the NAB
or If NAB India is on this list then they can pick it up and give good
information to their lawyer.

On March 7, 2019, the Prime Minister had release a set of coins comprising
Rs20/-, Rs10/-, Rs5/-, Rs2/- and Rs1/-. All of them are distinctly different to
both see and touch. The problem is that the RBI or whoever else responsible
have not bothered to withdraw the old coins. Thus the scenario becomes more

Re: [AI] Consider report for making coins friendly for the blind'

2023-05-11 Thread Shyam M. Sayanekar
Hello, earlier also I have written on this subject many times. Actually the
point is that neither the Judiciary, nor the law makers, nor the RBI is in a
position to comprehend the problem of the Vidually impaired. The things are
getting more complicated because the old and new coins and notes are
simultaniously in circulation. There are at least four different five rupee
coins and four different two rupee coins in circulation. Similarly, the ten
rupee, twenty rupee, fifty rupee and hundred rupee notes each of two different
sizes are in circulation. Priviously I used to challange the sighted people to
confuse me about the notes. But now I challange myself to identify the notes
without getting confused. All these coins and notes should be abolished and
only a single set of coins and notes should be newly introduced. But the
government would never do this. Professor Shyam M. Sayanekar

2. The Bombay High Court

3. This is the report on which
amar and George have worked as a part of the Delhi High Court matter.

4. So the Bombay High Court
matter will rely on this report. I have explained to Amar how it will really
work.

5. We cannot do anything
further at this stage unless this report is bad. It is currently out of our
hands and no point in now commenting.

6. What the newspaper article
also said was that the Bombay Court has asked for a report on the ap for
recognising currency. So I presumed that it is referring to Mani.

7. Only Harish has commented
about this Ap. If we have to help this matter and ourselves then we must do a
proper evaluation and send it to the NAB or If NAB India is on this list then
they can pick it up and give good information to their lawyer.
