Respected ma'am,

I am currently pursuing my Masters in Women Studies and working on my
dissertation on - Portrayal of Disabled women in Bollywood and its
relevance to the societal reality.

Purpose for doing the Research and Abstract of the study- Disabled women
face double discrimination in the society and that is clearly depicted in
mainstream cinema as well. The whole purpose of women being objectified in
order to cater to the male gaze induces a sense of to be looked at ness to
satisfy the voyeuristic pleasures of men. However this completely rules out
disabled women as asexual, unattractive and incapable of having a family.
Cinema acts as a medium of force forming public opinion that entertains the
audience by cashing on the phallocentric desires of men. However that is
not the case when disabled women are pitied and shamed by their family as
well as the society. What is interesting to note is how different is the
projection of the reel life of disabled women to the real life?

Content and audio visual data analysis of hindi movies projecting disabled
women over the years will indicate their portrayal in cinema and consequent
changes that have taken place. One alarming factor is that the intersection
of disability and women was seen as separate from the women’s rights issue.
Clearly there is marginalisation even within what should be projected to be
women’s issue which makes it all the more a reason for a standpoint
perspective.

Gender and socio economic class disparities are represented in cinema and
it becomes important for media to project disability responsibly. This
research project is an attempt to look into the tracing the portrayal of
disability in mainstream Bollywood cinema and how they are treated by
others around them.

I would be grateful if you could spare sometime in sharing this
questionnaire among disabled women and men who could express their opinion
on some of the issues faced by them.
