Re: [AI] Is it worth switching to Mac from Windows as a visually impaired user?
I tried this out with an iphone and a Bluetooth keyboard and find it to be extremely tedious. The keyboard support for voice over on the ipad is completely counter-intuitive. As an example, to hit "enter" on a button, instead of hitting enter, you need to press the up and down arrow keys together. This simulates a double click. The IPad doesn't inherently understand a keyboard and the "enter" key. This is just an example. There are several others related to edit mode vs. quick nav mode, the screen locking out when you are trying to read a document etc. All in all, I don't believe the ipad with a Bluetooth combination replaces a laptop - not even partially. -Manish -Original Message- From: AccessIndia [mailto:accessindia-boun...@accessindia.org.in] On Behalf Of Aaruni Sharma Sent: Monday, October 19, 2015 10:21 PM To: AccessIndia: a list for discussing accessibility and issues concerning the disabled. Re: [AI] Is it worth switching to Mac from Windows as a visually impaired user?
I use a mac book with voice over and also run windows 7 with jaws and NVDA using parallels on the same machine. At this point in time, the windows screen readers are significantly easier to use and more versatile as compared to voice over IMHO. I am a software engineer and use both windows and mac heavily for browsing, mail, presentations, excel, and software development. Your needs may be different and you may find one or the other better for personal preference. Keep in mind that there is a relatively steep learning curve for voice over when you switch from windows to mac, so, you may find it a bit extra difficult to begin with. Having said this, voice over is much better suited for touch screen devices like an ipad. So, if you plan to buy a touch pc like the surface pro for any reason, a mac will be a better option. Dear Ekinath, In all probability you can restore the use of function keys. Go into the BIOS and disable Active keys. You may need sighted assistance to do this. Then you will not be required to press the FN key to use the function keys. You can change the default behaviour of the Function keys row from the BIOS setup. This is normally the setting for all win based notebooks now days. - Original Message - From: Ekinath Khedekar To: AccessIndia: a list for discussing accessibility and issues concerningthe disabled. Re: [AI] Is it worth switching to Mac from Windows as a visually impaired user?
Dear Rishi Bhaiya, There is no straight forward answer to this question. What is your work profile like, what kind of applications do you use and are they available for Mac? What kind of screen reader user you are, what is the complexity of the web apps or other apps do you have to deal on a daily basis, do you extensively use office apps and is content editing or proof reading something you have to deeply go into, are couple of questions you should consider. While I agree that IPhones have a great accessibility, Mac accessibility and especially the advance features which you may expect to get on Jaws may not be available with Voiceover on Mac. Is your organization running on Mac? Even during the transitional stage, be aware that voiceover requires usage of 3-4 keys for commands, unlike screen readers like Jaws and NVDA. A friendly advice would be to not to jump to Mac if your organization users are on Windows, you will run into issues which could start from something as simple as fonts compatibility. While I love trying out things, but I would still say that Mac is not the best recommendation at the moment. Although there are many good users of Mac on this and other lists. Regards -- Amar Jain. Re: [AI] Is it worth switching to Mac from Windows as a visually impaired user?
Hi Rishi, The answer, in all such cases is "it depends." What is the software that you use? What kinds of things do you plan to do with your machine? If the only reason you are switching to a MAC is an outdated version of jaws, then download NVDA and give it a spin. If however, there are other considerations, then go for it. Yes, Apple accessibility is good but it is still difficult to create complex documents on theMac. This situation may have changed. Start your research at http://www.applevis.com. You can run windows on a Mac via bootcamp and other virtualization software. However, if you are doing audio production work on Windows then this approach could be problematic. See the posts on http://www.hartgen.org. This is why I stress on use cases. Re: [AI] Is it worth switching to Mac from Windows as a visually impaired user?
Hi, Apple accessibility is brilliant. I had thought of purchasing one for myself, but couldn't because my organisation uses windows. However, I have been using iPhones and iPad , and theres no better device with respect to accessibility interface. It's just that you will have to adapt to a new software. I would suggest that you could join the apple accessibility community for a few days, and speak to an authorised dealer about the training for using a Mac book. In case, you have a friend who's already using a Mac with iOS , then try that with voice over. It's an expensive device, but you can always switch to windows with boot camp feature. Hope that helps. Thank you. Regards Surabhi Sachar Sent from my ipad > On 11-Oct-2015, at 4:16 am, Rishi Kewalramani > wrote: > > Hi all, > My computer and jaws version is too old and needs to be replaced. [AI] Is it worth switching to Mac from Windows as a visually impaired user?
Hi all, My computer and jaws version is too old and needs to be replaced. I've been a windows with jaws user up till now. I was wondering is it worth switching over to the Mac n tosh OS with voice over. Is anybody using the Mac book or iMac on this list? Could you please share your experience from the accessibility point of view. Is it worth making the switch taking into consideration the stability of Mac computers and that the screen reader comes right out of the box unlike Jaws that has to be purchased separately? Please help me to make an informed decision, Appreciate all your valuable inputs, Many thanks in advance, Kind regards, Rishi.
