Re: [AI] Its 25th Jan today: Kaabil movie review: Hrithik Roshan is out for revenge

2017-02-03 Thread Bhavya shah
Hi,
Kaabil portrayed blindness quite effectively, keeping in mind that the
somewhat superhuman nature of Hritik's sense of smell and other
slightly impractical tasks that Hritik is shown to accomplish is the
masala element of Bollywood, which cannot be dismissed because this
was a movie as opposed to an educational documentary.
Yami's vulnerability was not associated to her disability in my
perception. This is because the violators let their identities be
known the second time they came, expressing their clear intention of
visiting regularly, everything being linked with the power of corrupt
corporate and political officials, nothing to do with helplessness of
a visually impaired female.
I am told however that Hritik's use of the cane was inconsistent,
portraying the erroneous concept that blind individuals can travel
even without a cane. The cane should have been used by both Hritik and
Yami throughout.
I also would have hoped that assistive technology should have been
displayed, having been added as an extra modern element, despite it
being based on a pre-AT era.
Otherwise, I am glad that the movie has shown usage of the senses of
hearing and smell, as opposed to propagation of the untrue myth of a
sixth sense. I view the unnaturally powerful senses of smell that
Hritik possessed an inevitable characteristic of any Bollywood movie's
hero, in this case of a blind man.
A white collar job would have been better, but given that the plot
relied upon Hritik being a voice artist, and that another notable
scene relied on the presence of a dance academy in which Yami was to
be a pianist, I would overlook this criticism.
Also, there was no excess of scenes drawing sympathy or pity for the
viewers. Both were portrayed as confident beings.
Thanks.

Hmmm.

Don't know whether sound and smell do equip us to take revenge fighting the
enemies, ritik way, or whether they could have not shown both fighting to
avenge her rape.

Maybe, the film could have given a more positive message then instead of girls
killing themselves if raped, and a blind male using his non-visual prowess to
avenge the deed.

And the re-make argument is not valid for not showing assistive technology.
The re-make is in 2016, and the film can be adapted to the times.

understand sounds through body sensations was explored.

And many who rely on ears for sound do not experience the same. So this could

Significance of sound and smell has been highlighted time and again, often
unrealistically, in society as a sixth sense.
It is also subjective and individual differences prevail.
We have to rely exclusively on non-visual stimuli, but capacities do differ
here also, and let them not assume that we all are super sharp in this.
However, it is a tragedy, for sighted that they care a damn about non-visual
stimuli.
Maybe, vision is too much dynamic for them to make them realize importance of
non-visual world.

Kaabil's contribution: Just think for a minute: from Samosa to chicken
smell differs and we can easily identify the items. and from cycle to
aeroplane the sound varries and totally blind can easily identify the
vehicle. Its a different thing that sighted people don't give dam

2017-02-02 Thread Asudani, Rajesh
Significance of sound and smell has been highlighted time and again, often
unrealistically, in society as a sixth sense.
It is also subjective and individual differences prevail.
We have to rely exclusively on non-visual stimuli, but capacities do differ
here also, and let them not assume that we all are super sharp in this.
However, it is a tragedy, for sighted that they care a damn about non-visual
stimuli.
Maybe, vision is too much dynamic for them to make them realize importance of
non-visual world.

Kaabil's contribution: Just think for a minute: from Samosa to chicken
smell differs and we can easily identify the items. and from cycle to
aeroplane the sound varries and totally blind can easily identify the
vehicle. Its a different thing that sighted people don't give dam
about it. The significance of smell and sound is as powerful as sight
for sighted people. And movie shows it well.

gave only 2200 screen for Kabil whereas for Raees they gave 2800
screens, I too saw the movie the movie is good critics describe
whatever they think.

Re: [AI] Its 25th Jan today: Kaabil movie review: Hrithik Roshan is out for revenge

2017-02-02 Thread Sruti disAbility Rights Centre
Avinash,

There had been quite a few Hindi movies where they showed marriage or love
life of blind people.

I am not talking about Sparsh which was an extraordinary movie but
mainstream movies like Anuraag or Barsat Ki Ek Raat. Kaabil is not the
first one to show this. There was also a film called Dusmaan where Sanjay
Dutt played role of a blind person who took revenge.

And as far as blind women are concerned, they are anyway thought as
vulnerable and therefore abuse happens more. In our country police refuse
to take FIR for most of the rape cases, disabled or not. I am talking from
experience of working for womens rights issues for last 30 yrs. There are
hundreds of instances of same.

I really do not know in what way Kaabil is showing something new. I would
be happy to learn more from others in this list.

Re: [AI] Its 25th Jan today: Kaabil movie review: Hrithik Roshan is out for revenge

2017-02-02 Thread avinash shahi
I feel that the movie ‘kaabil’ has not received a fair review which it
deserves. The routine film-reviewers are perhaps not in tune to
disability studies and its varying lenses to judging a movie. In a
country such as ours where a blind couple is a myth to many who
connect disability as akin to asexuality; ‘kaabil’ offers them a
shock. Then you have myth about disabled people are not eligible
marriage candidates; the movie rebuffs such misconception by reall
portrayal of Rohan and Supriya as confident and independent couple who
are working and are good at household chores. Then there is another
myth that its impossible that a disabled woman could ever be raped.
The movie challenges this false belief and makes it clear that
disabled woman are at greater risk of being harassed not only by
people but by those who are supposed to protect them from brutal rape
incedents and harassment. The lacuna which exists in the legal system
which favours powerful criminals disproportionately is a stark
reminder of how police discriminates against the most vulnerable such
as disabled woman when she goes to register an FIR in rape case. Then
many of my friends have opined that the movie doesn’t talk of
assistive technology which is the lifeline of blind people of late. I
feel that we shouldn’t expect too much from a movie which is dubbed
from American film ‘blind fury’. The acting of Hrithik and Yami is
superb. the sense of smell and hearing have been shown as excellent
solutions to challenges which lack of eyesight mandates. Many other
friends maintain that the movie lacks gender sensitivity where Rohan
imposes his will on Su. I guess this is not unique to ‘kaabil’. Be it
Shah Rukh, Salman or Aamir or any other famous Bollywood actor the
films revolve around them and the opposite female actress conform to
the norm. The Bollywood is changing though. The movie ‘kaabil’ is a
break from the past which provokes thought-process in the conservative
Indian society and gives a sense of pride to blind people who yearn to
be treated with dignity in the publick life. Leave aside the
box-office performance which is fairly good, I am sure the ‘kaabil’
will mark its imprint in the psychy of Indian viewers. Hrithik and
Yamy deserve bada vala kudos.

Can’t we think above jaws and talks?
Come on friends it wasn’t documentary. It was commerssial film. So
watch with minimum expaectation.
Personally I liked everything about movie.
In my view they have tried to make the movie as much realistic as
possible keeping in mind that it wasn’t art film.
And rajesh sir the movie is far better as well as realistic than aankhe.

2017-01-30 Thread Bhupendra Tripathi
After watching the movie, I would like to share my thoughts as below.
Pros:
1. It depicts that a blind person can be financially self-reliant,
live an independent life doing domestic chores like cooking etc. and
has regular emotions associated with human beings like love, anger,
frustration sarcasm, humour etc.
2. It shows that blind couples could make a good match although I
did not like the statement "two negatives cannot make a positive" by
the actress.
3. It shows that blind individuals have talents like dancing, playing
instruments and dubbing/mimicry.
4. It shows them leading a normal lifestyle - looking good, having
fun, celebrating birthdays, going to Malls and Amusement Parks.

Cons:
1. Nowhere in the movie, the use of accessible technologies like
talking mobile phones or screen reader software in computers are shown
except the use of "talking wrist watch".
2. Without sounding prejudiced, it re-inforces the stereotype that
blind individuals do not fit well in white-collared jobs and can earn
a living by being a voice artist/singers or playing musical
instruments etc. The NGO work-profile of the actress could have been
highlighted.
3. to make it more realistic, the blind hero could have been shown to
have passion for body-building or undergoing physical training
sessions before taking upon the revenge.
4.The blind couple could have shown a bigger family/friends support
system. They were shown to be little socially isolated with very
limited friends both disabled or otherwise and often left on their
own even in their grave situations.
5. The title of the movie is used to ultimately prove that a blind
hero is "kabil" or capable only to take a revenge on his own without
anyone's help.
6. The blind females are vulnerable is the message going back in the
society. In my opinion, the self-defense by girls and quick decision
making to save one's own life and other such tips should have been
shown.
7. It was not very clear why the female had to leave the job after the
marriage and become a home-maker.

Overall, it lost a golden chance to be more powerful disability-related movie.

i wish they'd consult a few members when they decide to represent a

He is a dubbing artiste, she is a pianist. They are both
happy-go-lucky with a thirst to live life to the fullest. They are
both blind too but the way Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam play the
leads of Kaabil, it is more incidental than the central focus of the
film. It is as if the love that envelopes them is enough to defeat the
odds life has thrown at them. They romance on Rajesh Roshan’s songs,
prove their dancing chops in Mon Amour and Hrithik even gets to play
Amitabh Bachchan for a bit.

Kaabil is a Sanjay Gupta film, and in his films, the perfect cannot
last for too long. The idyllic world of Hrithik and Yami is destroyed
once Rohit Roy and Ronit Roy’s baddies enter it. Yami’s Supriya will
fade out of the life of Hrithik’s Rohan, leaving a vacuum that only
revenge can fill. To be fair to him, he tries the police first but the
hands of men in khakhi are tied for the Ronit plays a politician, a
corrupt one at that. Hrithik will unleash mayhem in a style which is
reminiscent of a typical Sanjay Gupta film.

In that sense, Kaabil is a formula film the likes of which director
Gupta and producer Rakesh Roshan have tried time and again. Seems to
be inspired by Hollywood’s Blind Fury (1989) and Korean hit Broken
(2014), the film pits its blind protagonist as a man on a mission, out
to destroy the people who have destroyed him.

The focus is on action, done the Sanjay Gupta way. Read that as dull,
dark tones and a lot of blood. The focus is on Hrithik Roshan’s face
and his blank eyes. The film’s music, despite the retreaded Haseeno Ka
Deewana and Kissi se Pyaar Ho Jaaye, fails to actually stay with you
for long. Urvashi Rautela’s sizzling dance number probably will.

[AI] Its 25th Jan today: Kaabil movie review: Hrithik Roshan is out for revenge

Are you going?
