steps to set html as your default view: 1. open your gmail acount, 2. go to account options 3. find settings 4. select view as basic html then your view will be basic html. I don't know why. I still find Set basic html as default view as one of the links on my desktop and laptop. I have IE8 and 9, Firefox 32 and 19. It includes my desktop and laptop.
