purchase external USB sound card cum connector. Even if your internal
sound card is damaged, it will turn into an external sound card and
you can plug into it 3.5 mm audio jack headphone.

well in that case sorry for my ignorence. all i know is that i do use
real tech on my laptop, and it gets activated everytime i insert or
eject an audio device such as headphones etc.
as far as i'm aware it was an additional thing that was installed by
choice. it was not the default audio driver.
please ignore if this doesn't make sense or is not of any help.

yes. it was installed separately. its not in built.
true xp is ancient and a lot of stuff is not supported properly any
more. but that just means that i face minor issues. it hasn't
 completely been stopped being supported.
i know ive just been a bit lazy about upgrading since ive moved to a
different city and want to do it with my own trusted sources from my
 hometown.
anyway at least there r no issues with realtech for sure.

If you prefer internal sound card, please try low-end sound card like
Enter. I recently installed an Enter sound card for my customer with
Windows xp service pack 3, and it automatically recognized.
