Re: [AI] The Saksham smart cane complimented with synthetic vision in a mall

Sazid,

Saksham and a number of other organizations do provide training on the use
of the smart cane. Please write to i...@saksham.org for details. In terms of
use cases, they are up to you. The smart cane has an ultrasound device which
is mounted on a regular folding cane. You can remove the ultrasound device
and use it separately which is what I am doing. Indoor navigation does
indeed work.

I will illustrate the above with an example. To get to my desk in my office,
I have to walk into a large space. There is a pantry on my left, and a
number of desks on my right. I have to turn right when there is a gap
between the desks. I point the ultrasound device to my right and track the
changes in the vibration pattern. The moment I stop getting any feedback I
know that I have reached the turn because there is nothing on my right. I
take the turn and continue walking.

Can you please tell me the cost of this cane? Will they provide
training for using this cane? As I am not having habit of using cane.
How will this helps in indoor? Other than alerting the obstacles from
knee to top what else it helps us?

thanks and regards,
sazid

[AI] The Saksham smart cane complimented with synthetic vision in a mall

2018-05-26 Thread pranav.lal
Hi all,

I was at the select city walk and was using the vOICe along with the Saksham
smart cane. The vOICe was giving me details of the environment while the
smart portion of the smart cane was alerting me to obstacles. I was using my
prosthesis to hold the smart part of the cane across my body. I was going
sighted guide for safety.
The smart cane is well designed for Indian conditions. I spent a fair amount
of time in the area outside the mall. I believe the temperature was 43
degrees C and the cane kept going without any problems. The collision alarm
is a superb feature though its alert beep needs to be altered. It sounds
too much like the mall's metal detectors. In addition, though the collision
alert triggered, the actual collision did not occur. People moved out of the
way at the last minute and I was able to change position quickly when the
alarm went off. I used the vOICe to read the signs of the stores and other
text and to see details of clothing etc.
