dear friend, earlier, I could see better. so I never used white cane. but from 1998, I began to use this wonderful device. in the beginning, we will have some difficulties. but when time passes, everything will be allright. so you come forward boldly. soon you will find it very easy and comfortable to walk with white cane. I didn't get any training. still, I can manage it easily and safely. of course, if you get some training, it will help you. wish you all the best. Yes, at least the ground level surveying can be done effectively, though the cane of little help when it comes to locating objects suspended above the head level such as a low-hanging tree branch or an open truck door. It is a probe which will give a blind user the texture of the surface. for instance on a road the surface is smoother towards the middle of the road and becomes progressively rougher towards the edges. Hence the differential of rough and smooth surface helps us not to land in the middle of the road and keep a straight line along the road even if the path is not straight. The length of the cane should be ideally chest height. this gives us 2 step response time to respond to situations. The walker cannot do all that and if there is a pit there is greater chances he would go down with a walker. Re: [AI] problem with Walking
Taking initiatives and taking risks are two different things. If one is confident of doing something one has to do with full awareness of the risks involved. Even .01 per cent of lack of confidence is not good and one has to stop doing it in such cases. We are not talking about hiking Mt. Everest or piloting jumbojet, but walking on the road with clear understanding of the environment. V I persons should be encouraged to do this with the clear understanding of the risks involved and should not be scared off. I know this is not your intention but we have to teach people to trust themselves first. There is certainly a thin line that separates caution and recklessness and one has to tread this grey area in order to achieve independence. Re: [AI] problem with Walking
Hi, Has anyone tried using a walker instead of a stick? I am mobility impaired and I sometimes use a walker especially in the night when there is a power cut. I find that the advantage of a walker is that the chances of falling are close to zero. To put it lightly, every company has go to market strategy --and every visually challenged person must have a go to market strategy as well. Easiest way is to learn to use the cane and learn to do things independently, though you may occasionally have discomforts about it. Let fear not stop your urge to do things yourself. This will lift your confidence. Re: [AI] problem with Walking
Frankly speaking, I despair of the possibility of blind persons moving alone in today's urban milieu. Though I don't deny the pressing need for it, I think one might avoid unless strictly necessary. Risks are with everyone, blind or sighted but, please don't equate the two. Lack of sight does limit us in myriad ways and mobility can be practiced for specific tasks, but general mobility is a far-cry for totally blind at least. Even if achieved, it often results in sacrificing dignity at places where we would like to preserve it. However, I would not advice anyone not to learn the tactics. In fact, I myself am planning to undergo any such course. I had heard Enable India conducts such short time courses. Would like to hear if they are doing so now. I have even travelled all alone in my college days, but unless it is strictly necessary, and if one can afford an escort, one should not do it, me thinks. not at all! you can walk alone, once you decided. better you must start it with white cane. usually we say long cane. if i walk alone, i use long cane, if escorted, i keep folding cane with me. now here i will tell you some mobility techniques, nobody can guarantee, whether they will work, in your environment, but, it will support you to maximum extent possible. hold the long cane and bend it down to the level of your belt. now keep the head of cane one or two inches far from the zip of your belt. and the tail (tip) of the cane should be in front and stuck on the floor. grip your cane with your right arm, your fore finger should be open and stick on the cane. now you can move forward. but, do one thing. when you step your right leg, you must stuck your cane to the left, as you step your left leg, your cane should stuck on right. as per the mobility rules, one should not walk on footpath. instead, you should walk on the road and use the footpath as sure line. hope this will help. - Original Message - From: Raju singh bidh...@gmail.com To: accessindia@accessindia.org.in Sent: Wednesday, June 09, 2010 11:47 AM Subject: [AI] problem with Walking Hi friend! I am mobility impaired and I sometimes use a walker especially in the night when there is a power cut. I find that the advantage of a walker is that the chances of falling are close to zero. Though I myself am not an expert in walking as I’ve never taken any formal training in it, but with experience I can move at my own without much hassles, so I can tell you out of experience that its not difficult. The first and most important thing in order to walk independently is to build a self confidence in your own that you can move by yourself. If you’ve obtained the confidence in you, you are half way ahead! Here, could you please tell in which city you do reside? There are a number of cities where mobility trainings are imparted to persons with visual impairment by some organizations. If your city has such an organization, you may go there and learn the skills. Do let the list know about your city, folks here would let you know if there is any institute or individual who can teach you the mobility skills. However, before all this, as I already said, that you need to build a confidence in your own self about moving independently. Its very easy, mate, you do not need to worry about anything. As per risks involved, they are there with sighted people as well. Aren’t they? regards, Prateek agarwal. Skype: Prateek_agarwal32 Wanna see inside me?
