Re: AOL Listserv to be Discontinued
Hello, [sun zoom spark szs-accm...@szs.net, Fri, 21 Oct 2011 01:18:18 +0100]: What should happen next? Should ACCMAIL just stop? Would somebody start a new list to replace it? Please give us your opinions and suggestions. As for me, my preference is for the continued existence of a very low traffic list, provided the spam can be contained. At any rate the ACCMAIL FAQ (various language versions) should be updated to reflect the change; and ideally the list archives should be available somehow. That is, however, my ideal wish list. But I have to confess that I have neither the means (FAQ) nor the time and experience (new list, list archive) to take care of any of these points. On 1 November I intend to retire as current ACCMAIL 'owner' and moderator. My involvement will terminate with the list itself. I have been doing it for more than 9 years, which is probably too long anyway. Thanks a lot for your work for all matters ACCMAIL! various failures to GET pages ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
Hi, I wonder why the following URLs elicited error messages when trying to GET them via SZS' WWW4MAIL installation: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/7729718.stm http://english.vietnamnet.vn/lifestyle/2008/11/815533/ http://religion.orf.at/projekt03/welcome/../news/0812/ne081202_homosexuell_fr.htm (The first two are items of archaeological news, the third one concerns the Vatican's stance on homosexuality.) A couple of hours ago, I could access all of these addresses without any problem with a live connection to the internet. In the case of http://religion.orf.at/projekt03/welcome/... an error 403 was returned even though I could fetch numerous other items of news from the same site at the same time. This led me to suspect some kind of blacklist banning any URL containing, e.g., sex might be at work; the other URLs look innocent enough to me, though. (In case such blacklists are used I somehow doubt whether such an approach is reasonable, especially for requests of text dumps which presumably are of limited pornographic value. But I understand that this might be difficult to administer using the current state of the www4mail code.) Another problem I have is with some Wikipedia pages: E.g., http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scheveningen only yields the table of contents of that page, and the same has happened to me with other entries, too. Is there some known trick I can use? Re: Maximum number of requests per mail at SZS?
Hello, [sun zoom spark [EMAIL PROTECTED], Sat, 29 Nov 2008 14:57:12 -]: , | You may request up to 5 resources in each email you send to | www4mail`AT`szs.net. ` ... Also I wonder if excess requests within a single mail are dropped silently or cause an error message. I don't know! Would you like to test it? By now, I did some testing: - At first, I sent an e-mail with 10 identical GET requests (same URL); as a result, I got exactly *one* copy back. This actually surprised me quite a bit as I would have expected at least five copies, or nothing at all. Is this a known / documented behavior of the WWW4MAIL code? - I then sent an e-mail with 8 different GET requests and got 5 responses (2 of which were error messages due to bad URLs). So it seems that the requests are SILENTLY TRUNCATED to five requests. Maybe this should eventually be mentioned in the documentation. Still I like to use Accmail methods for some things, primarily because it suits my way of working, and because sending mails is simple, even in scripts - just cat something to sendmail, or use a little elisp to run gnus on some files. In particular, I have long used mails sent to myself for things like to-do lists, even before I learnt about accmail possibilities; as a consequence I have a proven system for automatically sending mails to me or others at set times; and that means that anything that can be achieved by sending mails can easily be automated for me. Re: Is WWW4Mail at Trieste Dead?
But are the WWW4Mail servers still useful? As we all know, WWW4Mail is very good -- but why would you use it if you don't know when, or if, you will get a reply? I often find myself in a situation where I want to check some URL occasionally, and it doesn't matter at all whether it takes a couple of days or not. The context here is the next version of the ACCMAIL FAQ. My principal idea is that it should focus on how to perform tasks, rather than list servers which might or might not work. For example: How can I use email-only methods to get the latest news about XYZ?, or How can I use email-only methods to research my postgraduate dissertation on subject ABC? I do not really like this idea, at least as the overarching principle of organization and at the granularity of your examples: basically this amounts to a tutorial on what you can do on the internet - a huge task (that I believe others have undertaken already) that is likely to stall and is not really related to AccMail methods. ISTM that the focus of the ACCMAIL FAQ should really be on how to ACCESS something by e-mail: The user should already know what he/she wants to get, and the FAQ should answer the question of how he/she may do so by e-mail. Whether this is for a thesis or something else is quite irrelevant. So the more reasonable tasks would be, e.g., How can I find the list of newsgroups some server carries?, How can I read some newsgroup?, How can I read a specific newsgroup posting with known message ID?, etc., which would be answered by the list of possibilities that might include some superficial comparison including, e.g., typical latency. But once someone decides to use, say, www4mail, there is no reason to spread out the relevant documentation all over the FAQ; instead, I would very much prefer it to remain in one place. All this suggests a separation of the FAQ into several parts: - introduction, basic information on how to access the various parts of the FAQ; - types and addresses of servers - server statistics (separate so far) - net tasks (how can I read that newsgroup?) - real-world tasks (how can I research my thesis?) - useful addresses Although a single large file is certainly convenient to get, it may not be as convenient to use. Another aspect is my expectation that the more extensive the changes to the FAQ are with respect to 10.2, the less likely are translators to update the non-English versions. These are not abstract needs -- they are real tasks. To carry them out, readers of the FAQ should know which of the available resources are most suitable. If you need one web page, and you can wait for it, WWW4Mail is fine. But research often involves following a succession of links -- and for that, the current WWW4Mail servers would be no good at all. Again I would refrain from this kind of statement - it depends on your expectations and the way you organize your work more than on anything else, I think. I like the statement WWW4Mail servers tend to be slow to respond, look at the statistics to get a feeling for that much better than WWW4Mail is no good at all if you need to follow a succession of links. I see no obstacle to editing the current FAQ as version 11. I'm sure Gerry would agree. To prevent a similar situation in the future, it might be a good idea to put some notes into the new version stating under what conditions people may modify and redistribute the text. Re: http://www.expita.com down :: what next?
What is difficult is maintenance. ACCMAIL resources have rarely been stable for very long. Removal of dead links and timely addition of new resources is critical. It is too much for a single person. I have some ideas on how it might be done as a collaboration. I will try to find time in the next 48 hours to write them up and post them here -- but I am also keen to hear *any* other suggestions from *any* other subscribers. Time to brainstorm!? I see three options: - a WikiWiki web: Hosting should be no problem. The main problem is the danger of vandalism. (I would also prefer the more modern versions that do not rely on CamelCase.) - Using a content management / versioning system suitable for decentralized development, like tla or monotone or darcs. At least the latter two work over e-mail. But I suppose there are Windows users here, and I do not know which of these are usable there. - Simply publishing an archive of the mailing list, perhaps with some automatic indexing / searching. The least effort, but also not as nice as a `real' document. A related question is what to do with the various translations into other languages: This concerns both vandalism in the WikiWiki case (how do you know whether some gibberish is nonsense or some foreign language?) and the problem of staying up-to-date in the face of frequent changes; the latter is practically impossible for the mailing list archive, and very problematic for the WikiWiki web.
