Meeting minutes of PA4 planning meeting

2012-10-26 Thread Thomas Pfeiffer

Hi all,
sorry for taking so long to write the meeting minutes, but I've finally put them
in the wiki (transforming a chatlog into a structured, coherent text is more
work than I expected):

http://community.kde.org/PA4PlanningMinutes

Feel free to correct errors directly on the wiki or reply here if you think
something is discussion-worthy.

Once it is finalized, I'd like to pu some content from it into the appropriate
wiki pages, since most of them are really outdated by now.

Cheers,
Thomas

ah, this list is just for review of existing work. Marco and I are focused on
doing only that this dev cycle.

new features ... we're leaving to others :)

so yes, sebas is working on syncing w/owncloud; JP is working on screen
rotation; ... ?

(sorry, i should have made that clearer in my original email)

Very nice!
Are there plans to get 3G running on Wetab 3G/Exopc as well?

In principle it should work already. What are the specific problems?

Last time I tried (which was quite a while ago, shortly after we introduced
NetworkManager) I could not make it connect. I guess I should try it again soon
and see if it works or if not what does not work.

Hi,

Great. Unfortunately I don't have the 3G stick either (but the Archos G9).
And it becomes hard to find it on the market. On Archos' store it is no
more available.

Enabling UMTS on Archos G9 in Plasma Active

2012-10-26 Thread Maurice de la Ferte
Hi all,

we added 3G/UMTS support to our latest Archos Gen9 Plasma Active devel and
testing images.
Great thanks to Ruediger Gad who did this work and also published accurate
dokumentation
about on
http://ruedigergad.com/2012/10/07/enabling-umts-on-archos-g9-in-plasma-active/#more-566

Latest weekly Testing and Devel images should already contain all needed parts
to get the external
Archos 3G UMTS stick running out of the box:

http://share.basyskom.com/plasma-active/archos_gen9.html

Also If you like to try it out on a previous installed release image, just do
following
steps in 'Konsole' application:

mer@device# su
root@device# zypper ar -f
http://repo.pub.meego.com/Project:/KDE:/Mer_Extras:/Adaptation:/Archos-gen9/Project_KDE_Trunk_Testing_0.20120816.1_armv7l/
 Archos_gen9_testing
root@device# zypper refresh
root@device# zypper up

Please note, a kernel update to the flash is mandatory to get the 3G/UMTS
support working.

Sadly for lack of this stick I'm not able to verify it on my own, but I cannot
find any regressions
yet. Feedback would be very nice, so we can make this update available to
release image repository.

Cheers,

Maurice

"Big picture" design one release cycle ahead?

2012-10-26 Thread Thomas Pfeiffer

Hey folks,
I have a suggestion:
I fully support Aaron's idea of small concentrated effort sprints with
integrated design and development, which comes pretty close to agile development.
However, product managers in the industry have found that such short design
cycles do not work well for all kinds of design. They work well for small
features/improvements, but for introducing larger changes or completely new
concepts, longer research/strategy/design phases work better.
One of these big changes for me is fleshing out the general concept of
task-driven design for PA. Since the big picture won't be implemented in PA4
anyway (we already got our hands full with small improvements/polish), I think
it would make sense to use this release cycle to work design-wise on the big
picture of a task-driven system parallel to designing the detailed improvements
for PA4 in each focus sprint.
The big disadvantage is of course that design capacity is split between the two,
but i think this is pretty much unavoidable since designing for a new metaphor
requires more then just a few weeks and we probably don't want to have a full
release without any actual development. In case of insufficient design capacity
for both, the focus sprints would always have higher priority, of course.
The biggest advantage to me is that ideally we have a broad concept for
task-driven design ready by the end of the PA4 cycle and can implement the
details for PA5 if we wish to do so.
So what do you guys think? Is the path to task-driven design worth putting some
effort into it ahead of time?

Cheers,
Thomas

That is rather a matter of taste and user preferences. There is indeed an
average user taste wich should be enough for now, but in a long run providing
several options (not only for user animation) should be a better approach.

Agree that given the current state of the AP development is better to join
forces.

it may be actually instead an use case for another app.
ie i would like to encourage the default apps to be as barebone as possible,
and this leads to choices, ie going for an animation style and be set with it
and aavoid settings, especially when they don't bring a real new feature but
just slightly different behaviors.

But at the same time not discourage too much attempts of doing fancier stuff
(yes i know maintaining a tight control like that on ui guidelines can seem
very restrictive for many), and the addons store is a good solution for that.

if the okular qml components are shared and developed in common, the
duplication would be just on the ui bits

the desktop files of the apps can have a priority defined in, so if we care
that the default ones have a certain one (or no more than a certain one)
the ones that come in addons can have a bigger defined one, so they win if
they get installed, and of course removing them the default one gets back

(we could even avoid to have a "preferred apps" ui at least for a long while
this way)

why?

(when i ask "why?" i mean: what is the user benefit)

I'm asking myself what the benefit of that would be as well. Sure some users
prefer one animation slightly over the other, but I don't see that as
idiosyncratic enough to warrant a config option, to be honest. Going with an
animation that most users like and nobody absolutely hates should be enough here.

Not sure how well works the app store, hopefully I will put there soon my
own version of the e-book reader

I don't think developing two different readers in parallel is the most efficient
use of our manpower. Personally I'd prefer if everyone interested in ebook/PDF
reader development in PA joined forces to create the best possible reader.

One upside of offering two readers, however, is to test if file association
works smoothly with Add Ons, i.e. if a user installs the alternative reader,
PDFs and ebooks should always be opened in that one and if she uninstalls it
again, everything should be opened with the default reader again.
