Re: [ActiveDir] dcdiag question

2002-01-16 Thread Neil Smith

jcl,

First double check to make sure the sysvol and netlogon shares exist. Try
doing a NET SHARE from a command box. If they are present then I'd say you
have nothing to worry about. DCDIAG does some checking of the eventlog while
processing the various tests - should you of cleared down the FRS eventlog
then the orginal message confirming successful creation of the above shares
will no longer be present.

As a side note there is a later version of DCDIAG available. The newer tool
is dated 6/9/00, 217,872bytes in size and contains some additional
functionality

Best...

[ActiveDir] Can't join a server to an existing domain

2002-01-16 Thread Abbiss, Mark

I must be missing something obvious !!

I am setting up a small test environment and have hit a problem.

I have completed a basic "vanilla" install of W2K Server on one machine and
promoted it to a domain controller. In the process, I called the new domain
"W2KTEST.CORP". I have configured nothing else on the machine at all. All I
have done is given it a static IP address of 192.168.1.1 and the NetBIOS
name is W2KSERVER01

I then completed a new installation of W2K server on another machine and
immediately want to promote it to a domain controller and add it to the
W2KTEST.CORP

When using the AD Wizard I select the required options to create a new DC in
an existing domain and am asked for the necessary information (account,
password and domain). Here I enter "administrator", "password" and
"W2KTEST.CORP" but I keep getting a message saying that the DC of
W2KTEST.CORP does not exist or that W2KTEST.CORP is not an AD domain.

So I tried to add the new server as a child of the W2KTEST.CORP domain and
get the same error message !

Do I need to set up any other resources on the first DC in W2KTEST.CORP ? Do
I need to complete any other configuration steps before it will accept new
DC's ?

Many thanks for any pointers.

Probably a DNS issue. Make sure that your new server knows where to go for

RE: [ActiveDir] Can't join a server to an existing domain

2002-01-16 Thread David Lloyd

Is sounds like the issue is related back to DNS.
1) Firstly with the first server did you tell it to auto configure DNS for
you? And if so is the new server pointing the first server for its DNS
services.
2) If you did not let it auto configure have you got DNS installed
somewhere? And if so are the first server and second server both pointing to
it? And did the SRV records register correctly (sub folder such as MSDAC +
LDAP should be within the zone file) for the first server (force again
trough command "ipconfig /registerdns" or just reboot)?
3) If the first server is not registering correctly ensure things such as
'Append domain name to Suffix' is selected in the TCP/IP properties or that
Dynamic DNS is enabled on the DNS Server.

Cheers

David,

Great information!

Conversely, if you find that the AD Zones under your domain are not
created or only partially created, rather than rebooting or doing the
ipconfig /registerdns (which isn't responsible for zone creation - just
A records for the host, PTRs secondarily) you CAN stop and then start
the NETLOGON service. NETLOGON _is_ responsible for record maintenance
for a DC to the DNS.

Good post, BTW!

Subject: [ActiveDir] Outlook 2002

Hi,

I have my outlook 2002 with some
POP3 accounts configured and now I added my exchange server account but when I
receive mails to my exchange account this ones arrive them directly to the
POP3's inbox folder.

How can I do if I want that all the
mails that send me to my exchange account aren't move them to the POP3's Inbox?

Common complaint. Microsoft suggests using a separate profile for internet email
accounts. Yes inconvenient. (effectively: Go to Outlook properties and select
"prompt for profile"; then create a new profile just for internet mail accounts)

Remove the personal folders from your profile that holds your exchange service. Good
luck.

RE: [ActiveDir] dcdiag question

2002-01-16 Thread Lori Demkovich

I concur. If the sysvol directory is shared and you are not seeing replication errors
in the event logs, I wouldn't worry about it. Run Netdiag /v /l >c:\netdiag.txt to
get a more thorough diagnostic on the success of your install. BTW, I haven't seen
the event log/dcdiag report correlation. I"ll keep an eye out for it.

Best...

I have been trying to iron out the kinks in my ad network for a while now
and I think I am almost done. My servers name is 'nap'

one of my final problems is when i run a dcdiag i get an error during the
'frssysvol' test. It informs me that 'These are errors after the SYSVOL has
been shared. The SYSVOL can prevent the AD from starting...NAP
passed the test frssysvol.

Could this be from a legacy share from my old DC?

Or simply set up a rule to move all mail
from the POP account into a .pst file, while leaving the Exchange mail on the
server.  But I will concur with the others that it’s either one or the other.
Unless you have separate profiles, that is.

I did the obvious NET HELPMSG 1722 and it tells

for ways to fix this problem, and can't find any. They all seem to give me
really unuseful information, like 'Make sure your DNS is configured properly'
and other such useful tidbits. I am really lost here! None of the workstations
experience any problems, whatsoever. They all work fine, log on fine, use
Exchange fine, register in the DNS fine etc etc, can browse the network and
web. They all work fine. BUT I can't get rid of this error message, which just
keeps on showing up. The client is convinced something bad will happen, and I
just need, for my own peace of mind, to solve this one - and the web has
turned out to be useless for tracking down a resolution.

BTW, the server is Small Business Server 2000

Andy,

I'd
run DCDiag - all options.  This ought to turn something up.  You might
also consider nltest (NLTEST).

This
is most likely a DNS issue.  Make sure that the 4 zones are configured and
available below your domain name in DNS.  You should find _sites, _msdcs,
_tcp, and _udp.  This is where the SRV (Service Locator Records) are going
to live.  If they are not all there, make sure that you have Dynamic
Updates set to 'yes' or 'Secure Updates', then stop and start the netlogon
service.

And,
to answer your question, RPC server is the process that is responsible for all
the essential communications on a Windows NT platform - workstation or server -
internal or external.  It's the Remote Procedure Call
services.

Feel
free to send your DCDIAG or NLTEST logs to me and I'll help you decipher what's
what.

Hope
this helps

James,

If I
fully understand what you're after, no - this will not cause a redeploy of
the software.  It's not the same as the computer/user 'falling out of
scope' of the GPO.

What
WILL work, however, is going to your software package, right clicking, all
tasks, and choosing Re-deploy.  This, in effect, WILL reset the flag and
cause the software to be reinstalled.
