I'm left somewhat confused as to why someone would tell you that the
only way to have a backup system for Exchange was to have it installed
on a backup domain controller (to somewhat reword what I believe you
said).
Fact is, as I'm sure you're very aware Exchange 2000 does not have a
directory service any longer and relies on Windows 2000 for this.
Exchange, in many cases, is installed on a member server. The critical
restore requirement for Exchange is the configuration and
re-installation of the mail stores and storage groups. Since the advent
of E2K, the Exchange server is more of a specialized database server
acting as a mail distribution system. A lot of the intelligence is on
the domain controller.
This is not to say that backing up a E2K system is not important,
because it is - it's more an issue of data than of directory, IMHO.
This is why clustering is the normal reliabilty solution with Exchange,
where another DC is the reliability solution with Domain Controllers.
