RE: [ActiveDir] Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) se rvice doesn't start

2005-06-06 Thread Tony Murray
Hi Ravi

From the microsoft.public.windows.backgroundtransfer newsgroup:

It appears that you do not have the following directory on your machine:

%ALLUSERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network

Create this directory and then do a 'net starts bits'.

Subject: [ActiveDir] Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) service
doesn't start

Hi All,

I have a very specific problem I need help with. Automatic updating is
partly working: the critical updates are recognized, but never
downloaded, because the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
service won't start on this PC.

When I try to start it, I get this error message:

Windows could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service on
Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If
this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer
to service-specific error code -2147024893.

When I look in the Event Log, I see this error message from the
Service Control Manager:

The Background Intelligent Transfer Service service terminated with
service-specific error 2147942403.

And as a result i am unable to install adminpack for windows2000 server.

I'll second that blatant plug for the adminpack.

Bought it at my last job a couple of years ago; huge bang for the buck.

I have always been a fan of the tools and all Mark's books. I have used
most all the freeware ones over the years and purchased TCPviewPro and
ERD commander in the past.

Recently we upgraded to the adminpack and it's simply awesome. It has
ERD Commander 2003,Disk Commander,NTFSDOS Professional, Remote Recover,
Monitoring Tools, and TCPView Pro. Also incorporates the Locksmith
utility.

The reason I mention it in this conversation is that the Monitoring
Tools consists of Filemon and Regmon Enterprise Editions. Each provides
continuous, real-time data remotely, it is awesome to watch things from
your own machine without having to install the tools on another system
and remote in. You can also have them log to a file directly and print
ranges. Very cool stuff.

The whole idea of forcing a

Youd think the same color cubicle walls would be depressing enough :-D.

At any rate, the background is
just a value in the registry, as is the ability to view the background

How is it possible that a regular user can change her background if you
disable the Background tab through a GPO to all users? I checked and
she doesn't have that tab, the GPO is working correctly.

At any rate, the background is just a value in the

change the permissions of the reg key.

In
many cases, GPOs merely hide the user controls. The APIs are still open to
run processes in the user's security context if they are called by other
means.

Your
user may have an application (such as an image editor)that allows
themto set a picture as the background image.

The
only way to prevent the change is by applying the appropriate ACEs to the file
system and/or registry.
