We ran forestprep and domainprep on existing Windows 2000 DCs and then added new Windows 2003 DCs and moved the FSMO roles. I would say follow the article and upgrade at least your PDCe and your Domain Naming Master, then add a couple of new 2003 Domain Controllers and transfer the roles to them.
