Re: 3575 Lib config 2+14 => 2+0

2000-08-03 Thread Dan Jennings

I did this too... fortunately it was before I had any data
in the library. I had to delete and redefine the 3575
library device (/dev/smc0 in AIX) in order to make the
problem go away. I don't think I had to delete the library
or drives to ADSM, just remove the device and re-run
cfgmgr.

Re: Oggetto: Re: Deleting Node.

2000-08-03 Thread Joe Faracchio

I second the suggestion.

When I first started out with WDSF/VM (pre-tsm, pre-adsm), I deleted
everything, that was already setup to use it out of the box, and tried to
reconstruct it piece by piece on my own. ('cause I didn't like all the
ambigous uses of STANDARD STANDARD STANDARD Grrr!)

And I quickly, very quickly learned that you run *SM for a few __
(weeks, months, years) before you really understand it.

And while you watch it do the work, you read the ADMIN GUIDE.

Re: Getting a list of onsite to reclaim offsite tapes.

2000-08-03 Thread Joe Faracchio

Hi Mark!

With collocation on for onsite and not for offsite,
I have found that the process of reclamation offsite tapes
reads just about every tape in my library. I've thought about it:
every day, every user sends me some backup data. I put it on their very
own tape (well not very own!) and hopefully before that, I put it on the
1/2 of a tape that's going to offsite. So every offsite tape has every
user that's run a backup over a 2 day period. To 'reconstruct' that
offsite tape from onsite collocates means I gotta mount ever users-tape
that's on the tape. I guess the fact I have rec=20 enters into too.
If you're rec'ing tapes at 80 instead it might not be as intensive.

It would be interesting to run
a select command to see if its true. Let me know if you come up with one.

I'm running this to reclamate about 20 tapes (out of 160)
and I do it over a whole weekend and I mean WHOLE
(fri nite to mon a.m. sometimes)

cheers ... joe.f.

Re: 3590 K

2000-08-03 Thread Steven Abrey

Hi,
I have just got a 3590-B11 and I am trying to connect it to a NT server
4.0. I can not get NT to see the 3590 when it's all connected. I have a
HP Surestore DAT drive already being used by our ADSM server (3.1.2.50)
but we don't seem to be able to get NT to see the 3590. I know we need to
use ADSMSCSI but if I disconnect the HP tape drive I get a message saying
that ADSMSCSI cannot find the device specified. I don't know where to
change or add a device to ADSMSCSI.

Any Help will be greatly appreciated.

I have setup several ADSM servers with ADIC tape libraries. They work
well. I think a few months ago when the first Scalar 100 was introduced
there was a problem getting it to work with TSM 3.7 (another consultant),
but eventually it was kicked up to development and the issue was resolved.

PIT Restore

2000-08-03 Thread Sergio Cherchyk

Hi *SM'ers.

I have to handle PIT restores for 10 servers (SUN Solaris), for which I
could be asked to perform restores of point-in-time conditions existing
60 days ago.
Since I don't know how often the files in these servers are updated, I
understand that I have to define a Copy Group with a Versions Data
Exists option set to 60 or so.
Actually, the backup requirements for the servers don’t imply
necessarily to have PIT restores available in a daily basis, but in a
weekly one. I mean, I will not be supposed to be asked for a restore of
July1st, but one from the first week of July (in any available day). So
that, I would not need to store 60 version of a given file, just eight
of them, providing that each copy belong to a different week (of course,
this would be only in case that they ARE modified).
Is there a way to guarantee the existence of just one version of a file
per week?
I'm trying to avoid using ARCHIVE because many of these files could be
not modified at all during the 60 day period, but if it is not a better
option, I think that ARCHIVE will be better than backup lots of version
of lots of files.
I’m using TSM V3.7.2 in an AIX 4.3.2 server.
I’m also exploring the option to use BACKUP IMAGE to backup the needed
file systems, once a week and then daily incremental backups. My concern
is that I’ve never used this command before, so I would like to know if
anybody of you is using it to backup file systems and which are the
limitations of doing so.
Thanks in advance.

converting from aix/adsm v3.1.2.50 server to winnt/tsm v4.1

2000-08-03 Thread Steve Bennett

I will be migrating my aix/adsm v3.1.2.50 server to winnt/tsm 4.1.

Normally you could do this by migrating all of the diskpools to the
tapepool on the tape library, locking all the clients, backing up the
adsm db, moving the tape lib to the new platform and then restoring the
adsm db to the new winnt/tsm server. However I do not know if the change
of server version might complicate things.

Question: Can I restore the adsm v3.1.2.50 db backup to a tsm v4.1
server?

TIA

By specifying the "TCPClientaddress" parameter in your dsm.opt file which
in turn points to your newly installed NW card's IP address.

Multiple restores - auto rename

2000-08-03 Thread Zoltan Forray/AC/VCU

Is there a feature/option of the AIX client that allows for multiple
restores of the same named file, automatically renaming the restored file
if it exists ?

We have a situation where someone deleted their e-mail and want to restore
from a backup. We keep 15 copies. They don't know which of the 15 to
restore, so they want all of them restored, giving them unique names (i.e.
.001, .002, .003, etc).

backup sets

2000-08-03 Thread Gerald Wichmann

I want to make sure I understand backup sets correctly as I’ve not had the
chance to implement them and I’m being asked about them. My understanding is
I can take any client and back it up via a backup set.. I can then take
those tapes and restore the system from them so long as I have a device
locally attached to that client and I have the Tivoli BA client installed on
it. Is this correct? Am I simplifying things too much? Do I need the BA
client to restore the data on them? In practice how well does it all work?

Re: AW: TSM V4.1 Manuals

I see what you are talking about. It looks to me like when
you pick a specific manual from the drop down list, such as
the Admin Reference for the Windows server, it works okay.
But if the desired book is already selected, the "Go" button
isn't working. For example, the Installing the Clients book
doesn't require you to pick a specific version; just click
"Go", but you can't get to it.

I can view the PDF manual for Installing the Clients if I do
this:

1) Select the HTML version of Installing the Clients. Wait
for the HTML version to appear.

2) Click the "Back" button on your browser to go back to the
page where you selected the manual.

3) Click the Installing the Clients book, which should now
have a default selection for the HTML book. Select the
PDF version. It should display. At least it works for
   me.

I will notify our web site admin about this problem.

TCP/IP errors?

2000-08-03 Thread Rik Foote

Hi all.

Running ADSM 3.1.2.50 on Solaris 2.6, client is 3.1.0.8.

We are getting these errors quite frequently in the dsmerror.log. They
happen every 5 seconds for a few hours then taper off to every 20 minutes.

08/01/2000 03:19:39 TcpRead(): recv(): errno = 131
08/01/2000 03:19:39 sessRecvVerb: Error -50 from call to 'readRtn'.
08/01/2000 03:19:39 QueryPendingSchedule(): optSendQuery(): reasoncode =
-50
08/01/2000 03:19:39 ANS1017E Session rejected: TCP/IP connection failure

A bounce of the client dsmc sched task seems to set it all right again, but
often this cannot be done until we arrive at work in the morning (no 7x24
monitoring). Which is too late to complete overnight backups,
unfortunately.

I have asked our LAN/network guys to look into why it might be occurring,
and they will be getting back to me soon I hope.

Has anyone else had this problem, and if so what was the cause/solution?

Thanks in advance.

Re: maximum size of recovery log

2000-08-03 Thread Roger C Cook

The admin guide states the maximum as being 5.5 GB, and the largest I could
set mine to was 5400 MB. We use rollforward mode for our log, but I have to
change it to normal mode we when do our quarterly archives to keep it from
filling up, then change it back once the data is copied and migrated. That's
the only suggestion I am aware of to minimize log usage. Rollforward mode
makes for a much larger log that normal mode.

Getting a list of onsite to reclaim offsite tapes.

2000-08-03 Thread Mark Brown

Hello,

When I turn on reclamation for a copypool where my OFFSITE tapes
are adsm uses tapes from the primary tape pool to reclaim the offsite
tapes.

Does anyone have a script that can report what tapes from a primary pool
will be asked for when reclaiming an offsite copypool

What does your Activity Log show to be happening?
If these volumes show up in a Query Volumes report, then do a
Query Content to see what's on them, to gain some insight into
what's happening. Look for sessions in your Activity Log and
accounting records indicating what's happening.

Re: Restore Speeds : Collocated vs Not

2000-08-03 Thread Slaughter, Bill

Yes (from memory):

Same restored Data, Sort of, each time we improved the process.

The data is from an Oracle database (Not using EBU) and is about 36-39 4GB
mount Points. i.e. 130GB of Oracle Database Data. (Actual ADSM STGP size
50GB)

Same server: each time.

RS6K R50 AIX 4.3.3 ADSM 3.1.2.40 (Yes I know it's old)

Client: HP T520 (12 CPU)

Client speed will make a difference.

I ran the restore on our faster HP V2500 (8 Cpu) it ran in
just over an hour.
I had to check for errors more because I was looking for why
it completed so quickly.

When using No Collocation it ran for over 24 hours (From DLT7000 in a STK
9710 Library). The data was on just a few DLT 7000 tapes so each restore
request (Mount point) had to locate the data on the tape. I believe it spend
much time waiting for the spinning/rewinding of the tape.

When using collocation at filespace (more tapes) I was able to get it done
in about 8 hours. I could only run 8 at a time since that was the number of
tape drives I had.

When I issued move data commands and brought my tapes back to the disk
storage pool we got it down to 5-6 hours. I did not count the time I spend
doing the move data commands.

We do this restore about twice a quarter. We have learned that when we need
to do this planning in advance by either turning on collocation at the
filespace or turning on the stgpool cache=yes option.

In a disaster scenario, I would issue a "Stgpool restore" to get it back to
the point where all my data (main database data) was on disk. I realize that
I don't have to wait till the "stgpool restore" is done for client restores
but I would anyway.

Hello
We have a 3494 tape library with 4 tape drives. We are using TSM3.7 WIN
NT. Suddenly the TSM does not see those 4 tape drives. We tried shutting
the
library off and rebooting the TSM server but that obviously did not help.
Any ideas what could be wrong? Are there any device drivers missing?

Re: Tape Drives

2000-08-03 Thread John Monahan

The library won't show up in control panel...tape devices. Check to make
sure that the library manager service is running in Control
Panel...Services - I think its called "IBM Automated Tape Library" by
default.

You can also test the communication between NT and the library by using the
lbtest utility. It's located in *:\program files\tivoli\tsm\utils by
default. Just type in "lbtest" from the command line in that directory and
then select 1 to run a manual test. There are several tests you can run
all driven by a menu system. I usually select 9 to return the library
inventory to test if things are working.

Its designed to use SNMP statistics, but I just replace the snmp

Weird scratch tape activity

2000-08-03 Thread Ugo Pistacchio

We are running ADSM 3.1 on an NT box with a STK 9740 library. We have been running
out of scratch tapes at an alarming rate. When I free up some scratch tapes, if i
continually run Q LIBV, I see the scratch tapes being used up almost immediately.
ADSM will turn one scratch tape into a Database tape and then the next into a Data
tape and continue doing so until all the scratch tapes are used up;about 25 in an
hour. All this happening before my eyes with no processes running.

Any ideas?

Thanx to all the ADSM'ers!

Once more on memory tuning

2000-08-03 Thread Tab Trepagnier

After sending my AIX memory tunings to the list, I received feedback from

MAXperm has an even greater influence than MINperm.

I now have settings I am comfortable with and have no intention to change. They
are shown below. I included a VMSTAT trace farther down to show my results.
Operationally, the system displays almost instant response to all queries,
sessions, etc. This is MUCH better than it worked when I began my tuning
experiments.

For those just tuning in:
  AIX 4.3.2.0
  ADSM 3.1.2.55
  RS/6000 7025 F50
  2 x 332 MHz CPUs
  512 MB RAM
  21.5 GB database, 87% utilized
  4.4 GB recovery log

These are my current VMTUNE settings:

maximum pinable=80.0% of real memoryminperm=25.0% of real memory

Non-default settings are minperm (-p), maxperm (-P), maxpgahead (-R), minfree

This is today's results from a 2-second vmstat trace. While this trace was

One of my clients is trying to do a restore from a Notes agent. He keeps

Shekhar - You're thrashing. What you need to do is sit down with the

up policies. If you don't get a firm grasp on that you'll just have
endless problems as you continue with TSM administration.

Hi Eric, James, and everyone else,

Yes, this is a "tradition" that we are not too fond of, either.
As it turns out, the package that was uploaded to the FTP site
was not corrupt per se; rather, it got uploaded in ASCII format
rather than binary format. The correction was to upload it
again in binary format.

I like the idea of having our testers download the package from
the FTP site and verify it is installable immediately after
it's put out there, just as a final "sanity" check. This is
something I will bring up back in the lab.

Thank you for your feedback,

Hi James!
I wasn't talking about support. I was talking about testing. Putting a
corrupt archive package on your FTP server doesn't sound like thorough

This has absolutely nothing to do with the support that Andrew, Del, Vo An,

Shekhar,

when I understand your problem correctly, you want to move nodes to another
policy
domain. therefore you don't have to delete the node, you just have to change the
policy domain for the node.

If you delete the node and newly define it, you have to delete all filespaces
before
and so you loose all your data stored. this is not needed. you can simply
change the
policy domain for the node and save all the data. but you should be aware that
you
loose all associations of schedules etc. you have to define new schedules for
each
new policy domain even if it has the same action and timing.

Re: 4.1 Win32 Client Issues

2000-08-03 Thread Andy Raibeck

Hi Bill,

In the README.1ST and .FTP files for the fixtest, I mentioned that
if you use this fixtest to resolve IC27346 (support for file names
greater than 259 characters) you should wait for the September
maintenance before upgrading. I really should have just been more
general, and said that if you use this fixtest at all (not just for
the one specific fix), then wait for the September maintenance
before upgrading.

Despite the sequence of the version numbers, the 4.1.0 client code
was "locked down" before IC26980 was fixed, and before 3.7.2.16 was
released.

Sorry for the confusion, I will look to get the README files for
this fixtest updated on the FTP site.

Andy

I downloaded and installed the 4.1 Win32 client on my W2K machine and have
the following issues:

1. I was running the 3.7.2.16 fixtest release because of APAR IC26980
"ANS1076E *** Directory path not found ***" issued during backup. Seems it's
back in the 4.1.0 release.

2. When I installed the 4.1.0 client without first removing the 3.7.2.16
client, the installation did NOT replace all the files. The DSM.EXE showed
up as 4.1, but the DSMC.EXE and DSMADMC.EXE still said 3.7.2.16 when I
started them up. I had to uninstall, reboot and re-install the 4.1 client to
get everything at the 4.1.0 level.

Other than that it seems to work find going to a 3.7.2 AIX server.

Begin diagnosis steps... What is the status of those drives to your

How about use via 'tapeutil' or similar command? What do various

And just what is evidenced in TSM "not seeing" the drives?

Any ideas what could be wrong? Are there any device drivers missing?

You have to delete filespaces for the node, then remove it.
Here's a macro called delfn.mac
syntax while logged on to an admin client session would be
macro /fullpath/unless_you_are_there/delfn.mac nodename
FYI Thanks Tim

/* you want to logon with a -itemcommit so if there arent any

/* the macro will keep on going onto the next command */
delete filespace %1 * wait=yes
remove node %1

2000-08-03 Thread Richard Sims

>I appears that HSM is still not suppoted for NT clients. Does IBM/Tivoli
>still believe that the open systems environment is a passing fad??

But you said "NT" and "open systems" in the same context! ;-)

We know what you're getting at, though. The "ADSM New News!" teleconference
of February 25th, 1998 was notable in a strong emphasis on "NT Directions",
where the scent of money was overtly bulleted. It also said:
  - SSD commits to become best-of-breed by NT 5.0 GA
- ADSM developer on Redmond campus
- Separate, focused NT strategy/development effort
- Functionality to be delivered in lock step with Microsoft
It also talked of "HSM via NT API".

Well, in some 30 years of dealing with IBM I've learned that strategic
directions are in reality tactical explorations, not to be taken very
seriously in that they rarely live up to the proclamations. If you've
dealt with other vendors you'll probably agree that IBM is far and
away better than most other vendors in responsiveness and action. It's
just when they make such a display of intending to do something and don't
follow through that their credibility suffers with the customer base.

But here, you actually had two distinct libraries that could not share
slots or drives.

>
> So I can just have onsite scratches pointing to "K" only tapes?

I don't have a lot of experience with scratch categories, but it seems to
me that this setup would require multiple (logical) libraries being
defined to *SM, one with SCRATCHCATegory=192,PRIVATECATegory=190, and the
other with SCRATCHCATegory=193,PRIVATECATegory=191. It seems that then
you would also have to partition your drives amoung the two logical
libraries, which would be required if you have a mix of B1A and E1A
drives...

I'm not aware that you can have mulitple scratch/private categories
assigned to a single library.

But then again, I might be missing something here that a more experienced
3494er might know. I've only had mine for, what, 10 months now! My, how
time does fly!

Migration ADSM 31 - TSM 3.7 - TSM 4.1

2000-08-03 Thread Michael Abel

Hi *SMers!

A customer of us is still running ADSM 3.1 (on AIX). Due to some resource
restrictions (budget etc.) we will not be able to migrate to TSM 3.7
during the next weeks or months. Besides the licence aspect (TSM 3.7 can
only be ordered until Oct 25th, right?) I'd like to check out what
technical limitations we have to respect in order to plan the migration of
the boxes.

solution 1
adsm 3.1 - migration to tms 3.7 - migration to tms 4.1
this should be ok, right?

solution 2
adsm 3.1 - migration to 4.1 (in 2001)
can this be done?

Michael
