silo is audited when checking in tape

2000-10-30 Thread Suad Musovich

TSM: 3.7.3
System: Solaris 2.6 (Ultra 2)
Library: Sun/ATL 7/3500

I have a problem where the Silo audits the entire library after I send a
command to checkin a tape, specifically after the "reply xx" command.

The command sent:
checkin libvolume dltlib bqyXXX status=private
(then, after being prompted, a "reply xx")

It will do a barcode check on all the tapes in the silo then physically
check in the tape. No errors from the system, silo or TSM, just a 5 minute
wait.

It only started happening recently,
I'm not sure if it's a problem seen before or a hardware fault (I'm sure
Sun will contest it is a problem with the Application)

Anyone seen this one

Cheers, Suad

Re: Client Code Level

2000-10-30 Thread France, Don G (Pace)

Check the README file on each (server and client); should find both
combinations are okay, but... occasionally, there's no turning back once you
move up to a newer level.

You can (almost always) migrate upward either client or server, on
independent schedules; I have never seen (since v.1!) a co-req of client
level to server level --- the one possible exception might be HSM support
--- but never the base service components. Again, read the README file,
very carefully... this is (like others) where the devil is in the details!!!

Hope this helps.

multiple nodes in a single client

2000-10-30 Thread Sergio Cherchyk

Hi all.
Can anybody show me how to configure multiple nodes in a single box? I
know that it is possible but I couldn't find enough information in
guides or redbooks so far.

I have a 3.7.2 server in an AIX machine and 3.7.2 clients in AIX and
Solaris boxes.

What I want to do is to start more than one schedule per client, each
one using a different inclexcl file and logging to a different schedule
log file.

Thanks in advance

Re: Schedule definition for SAP online and offline backups.

2000-10-30 Thread Davidson, Becky

What software are you using as software for the online backup? We are using
SQL Backtrack and TDP for SAP. With SQL Backtrack we use a cron job to run
the backups and that is maintained by the DBA's. With TDP we use the SAP
scheduler to do the backup and that is maintained by the Basis team.
According to one of our Basis guys you would have to set up 7 different jobs
unless you do something with profiles.
That is what we do...
Hope it helps.

So, I read the manual(s) on defining schedules and am puzzling over the best
way to do the Sunday through Friday backup. Is there a better way than
defining six (6) backup schedules for these days?

Use the DAYofweek=WEEKDay for the Monday - Friday backups, and the

Andy, thank you for the detailed note on Friday afternoon.

An open note to TSM product managers:

A problem very similar to this one got into the ADSM Windows client a few
years ago, and caused significant grief to ADSM sites. I find it
distressing to see a similar problem show up again. Sure, it is probably a
different bug, but what it indicates is that insufficient quality control
was added following the last occurrence of this bug. If a test for this
had been added to the quality control process, this bug would have been
detected before the code had been distributed. This does make me wonder
what, if any, testing is done before the code is made available for
distribution. If you cannot learn from the past, you (and all of us) will
be forever condemned to repeat the same experiences again and again.

10/27/00 17:48:14 ANR4706W Unable to open file

Here is the info for the message:
ANR4706W Unable to open file Filename to satisfy web session Session ID.
Explanation: A web browser requested a file and the server could not find
the file on the local file system. Special note, some files requested from
the server are not vaild and are caused by a browser error. For example, a
request for CommandLineBeanInfo.class is not a valid file request. However,
a request of a GIF image or HTML page should not produce this error.
System Action: None.
User Response: Verify that permission for the file are set correctly and
file exists.

I used the command line to get the info but in the case of the operators
it's easier if they just use the web interface. I resolved the issue by
halting adsm and restarting it but don't know why that would have cleared
it
up after reading the explanation above. Can anyone explain this to me? Is
there an easier fix for this without taking the server down?

approx 850 NT servers. I am looking for information about the various
available software packages. I know there are several alternatives on the
market. Has anyone implemented a HSM solution? If so, what program did you
use/try out and what are your results. satisfied ? what kind of disk
reclamation did you see after implementation. TIA

AIT Tape technology

2000-10-30 Thread Brian T. Huntley

Hi, everyone...

The management here is considering ditching our 3494 w/ 2x 3590-B1A's for
a Qualstar AIT tape solution in order to save money. I have concerns that
this could potentially reduce efficiency, availability, and reliability.

Could anyone offer any comments on why this would be a good/bad idea?
I've got two years under my belt with the IBM gear, but am having trouble
finding much real-world info on the AIT technology. Would this be a major
step backwards for us?

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Regards,
Brian

Did I miss something?
Is there anyway to exclude files from archive process?

2000-10-30 Thread Shekhar Dhotre

I am also using same library stk9710 .

try following and you wil be compfortable.
The syntax of the label libvol command is wrong. It should be:

label libvol libname search=yes volrange=1stvol,lastvol checkin=scratch

You can't use the labelsource parameter. You can also label a single
volume:

label libvol libname volname checkin=scratch.

Subject: can't label tapes, ADSM 3.1 and ACSL 5.2 and STK 9710 with S

Hello ADSM administrators,

I'm trying to label brand new DLT tapes to create ADSM scratch volumes
using various
variants of the "label" and "checkin" commands e.g.
 label libv tapelib B00880
 label libv tapelib B00880 overwrite=yes
 checkin libv tapelib B00880 stat=scratch

Nothing seems to work. The activity log has:
ANR8802E LABEL LIBVOLUME process 351 for library B00880 failed.
ANR0985I Process 351 for LABEL LIBVOLUME running in the
BACKGROUND completed with completion state FAILURE.
ANR8426E CHECKIN LIBVOLUME for volume B00880 in library TAPELIB failed

In the past I have been able to get the need for scratch tapes covered
through reclamation
and offsite recalls, so this is a first to me. Do I need to label new tapes
with a utility or?
The OS is AIX 4.2.1 but it would not seem to have any bearing.

Any help would be appreciated.

Chaning Layout from one to two Tape Librarys

2000-10-30 Thread Timo Kilchenmann

We are currently using *SM with one IBM 3575-L32 Tape Library. In these
library are the stgpools volumes and the copypool volumes located.

Because we need more capacity we are installing a second 3575-L32 Tape
Library. My idea is to have the copypool volumes located in the new library.

How should we accomplish this:

1. by moving tapes by hand physically from old to new library and changing
"some" definitions in TSM/DB?

2. by defining a new copypool and migration to this copypool?

For case no. 2 we are not happy with the thought of migrating data from
tapevolume ==> drive ==> *SM-Server  ==> drive ==> tapevolume because this
will take a lot of time!

In case no. 1 would we have to mess around with the *SM DB?

Any thoughts about this are very much appreciated!

AW: ATTN ALL TSM USERS: Windows NT/2000 Daylight Savings Time Pro blem - Solved

2000-10-30 Thread Stefan Holzwarth

I have only one large NT server (200GB over Tokenring) using 3.7.2.01, the
other clients with 3.7.2.01 are small or have a 3.1 version.

What happens if you install the fixtest v3.7.2.17 after canceling a nearly
30 % done backup with a 3.7.2.01 client. Are these 30 % backuped agaiin due
to their incorrect date?

If i do nothing and let the "full" backup complete and install next month
the fixed clientversion
do i run into a full backup again?

With regards

Petr,

I suggest taking a look on pages 14, 15, and 16 of
TDP for Lotus Domino for Unix (Installation and User's Guide),
in the section "Setting Environment Variables", to setup the
environment variables to point to the Domino and TSM libraries.

And one more point, under /usr/lib, there should be a
symbolic link libnotes.so point to the actual library
in the path where Domino is installed.

For example:
 cd /usr/lib
 ls -l libnotes.so
 libnotes.so -> /lotus/notes/5041/sunspa/libnotes.so

Note: without this symbolic link, the Agent would not know
how to find libnotes.so.

Thanks,

Subject: TDP for Lotus Domino on Solaris - please urgent

Hello ,
first of all my knowledge of Solaris is very very basic - I am installing
TDP for Lotus Domino 1.1.1
on Solaris 2.7 , backup client installs and runs successfully so I continue
with TDP - after installation ( succesfull according
to result of install process and domsetup script ) I enter domdsmc command
:

/opt/lotus/notes/latest/sunspa/domdsmc query adsm - adsmpwd=xxx
ld.so.1 : /opt/lotus/notes/latest/sunspa/domdsmc : fatal : libnotes.so
open
failed : No such file or directory

So I checked system for libnotes.so - it is in Domino directory and this is
in PATH , i found 3 ld.so.1
( /etc/lib , /usr/lib , /usr/lib/sparcv9 ) - every one is different .
I upgraded Domino form 5.0.2c to 5.0.3 and to 5.0.4 - no luck , so I tried
command from Domino console
 > lo domdsmc and it runs OK ! ?

I used root user ( and Domito runs under root during tests ) .

Any help will be highly appreciated.

3995 Installation

2000-10-30 Thread Pamminger, Andreas

Hi all,

I have to configure a 3995 - C68 Library to my TSM 3.7.3 Server on AIX
4.3.3.
Does anybody have such a configuration, or know how to configure it?

I tried to to configure it like this:

Library: lb0
Drives : rop0 ... rop3
devclass :WORM ( I am using CCW Medias)

I can label Medias without problems in TSM, BUT I get errpt entries on
AIX.
If I trie to migrate or store data on the Worms, TSM says that "there are
no mount points" available.

Thanks in advance.

Andy

PS: Where can I get more Information about using/handling optical medias
   with TSM??
