Re: TDP for Domino V.1.1.1.1 problems
Hello Robert ! Thanks for the answer - but I solved the problem last thursday. I think information in README for V.1.1.1.1 are misleading the part : additional notes should be removed/replaced in this part is a statement like . note that the .../ibmpow/latest was removed. that is nor correct. after some frustrating days I got this infomations from IBM Mainz ADSM/TSM Support We have found several other pmrs reporting the same problem. The resolution was the following. 1. Copy the DSM.SYS and DSM.OPT to another directory like/home Any INCLUDE/EXCLUDE list you may have for the Backup Archive Client and API. 2. Uninstall ADSM client , API and TDP for Domino 3. Install ADSM Client including TDP and the API which came with TDP. 4.Then verified connection to ADSM Server 5. Run Domsetup 6. Then make sure paths are correct. /opt/lotus/notes/latest/ibmpow should be set before /usr/lotus/bin Then do $domdsmc que adsm $domdsmc que dom . My guess is that's the problem. I don't see the actual error in any of your attachments. Are you seeing a 4103 error code? Try taking out the "/opt/lotus/bin" and the "opt/lotus/bin/tools" directories. Also, the symbolic link to domdsmc MUST be from the /opt/lotus/notes/latest/ibmpow directory, not from the /opt/lotus/bin. The "domsetup" script puts that link there. /opt/lotus/notes/latest/ibmpow should be first in your PATH. If this doesn't help, set up to run with the lotus "wrapper script" (5 steps) as described in the latest README for TDP for Domino. Hello Del, thanks for responding. We solved the problem ba extending the Partion where the TLs are stored. As all our other Dommino servers have Partions for the TLs at least a size of 8 Gig, we never ran into this problem before. After resizing the partition I watch the restore process, so I can give an awnser to the question of how big the size of the TL-partion has to be by myself. If I can trust my eyes, TDP needs the space for 2 extra TLs (i.e 2 x 64 MB). There is one log to be restore, which has the filenameextension tnx.dad and one which seem to be applied which has the filenameextension tnx. TDP restores one TL after another and deletes them as they aren't use anymore. You need to find a way to clear up space or increase the disk in size. Make sure you are backing up your transaction logs frequently with the DOMDSMC ARCHIVELOG command. Try running the DOMDSMC ARCHIVELOG command followed by a clean shutdown of the Domino server. Domino should clear some of the space taken up by the transaction logs that you have been backed up successfully to TSM. When you restore and activate with applylogs, TDP for Domino will restore only the transaction logs it needs for the restore specification that you requested. ADSM 3.1.2.50 upgrade to TSM 3.7/4.1
Folks, We will soon be upgrading our current ADSM 3.1.2.50 server to TSM 3.7 or 4.1. Our current server runs on OS390 2.4 and our new server will also run on the same operating system level for a while until we upgrade to OS390 2.7. My question relates to the announcement letters that i have read regarding the OS level that is required to run TSM 4.1. The announcement letters seem to say that 4.1 will only run on OS390 2.8 and above. Is there anybody out there running TSM 4.1 on OS390 and what levels of OS and TSM do you use?. There is also some confusion as to what level of client software is required to backup USS (Unix System Servives, formeley Open Edition) on OS390 2.4 and 2.7. Can any one help? Re: DIRMC - disadvantages only?
Another disadvantage is reclamation of the copypool for the DIRMC disk pool. If the primary pool is a disk pool, then TSM server only reads 1 file/directory at a time during reclamation of the offsite copypool for the DIRMC primary pool. This makes the reclamation process REAL slow! Tivoli says 'working as designed' and would only take an enhancement request on it, not an APAR. Originally my storage pool was: DIRPOOL primary DISK DIRCOPYPOOL copypool TAPE To get around this 'feature' a co-worker of mine came up with this new stgpool structure: DIRPOOL primary DISK: NEXTPOOL-DIRFILE DIRFILE primary SEQUENTIAL on DISK DIRCOPYPOOL copypool TAPE The DIRPOOL is small, only 50MB. The DIRFILE is set to 100MB filesize. The client backkups put the directories in the DIRPOOL and then the daily server processes are: BA STG DIRPOOL DIRCOPYPOOL BA STG DIRFILE DIRCOPYPOOL UPD STG DIRPOOL HI=0 LO=0 (Migrate for DIRFILE) This way when reclamation occurs on DIRCOPYPOOL, the primary pool is a SEQUENTIAL pool and then TSM reads them in batches. It's a LOT faster this way. One problem I encountered with DIRMC was with some of the older TSM and ADSM clients. I was getting errors on the client when trying to send a directory entry that the server was out of storage pool space in the DIRPOOL. Turns out this is an APAR (Can't remember the number) in the client where it calculates the size incorrectly on NT clients with security assigned for directories. To fix this upgrade to the latest client, or add SKIPNTPERMISSIONS YES to the DSM.OPT file on the client. Re: How to archive daily/monthly/weekly
Hi I would think you'd want: -1 default backup with verexits set to 10 ( if you want to ensure a file changed everyday could be restored to a specific version for a day for 10 days) - 1 default archive group set to 1 year retention run each month - 1 additional archive group set to 7 year retention run each year Yes, you can use multiple management classes to backup /archive the same data but you will need to explicitly reference the 7 year archive group whern you do those archives because it is not the default archive group. [EMAIL PROTECTED] 11/28/00 10:13AM Hello ADSM admins, A customer has a request for a bacup/archive and I'm not really sure how to implement this so that both these requirements are met and the ADSM server has the least data to keep. The customer has a directory on a server (NT) where he wants something like: 1) daily backups retained for 10 days 2) monthly backups retained for 1 year 3) yearly backups retained for 7 years I'm not sure if I'm using the right ADSM terminology here, e.g. backups vs archive, but the customer wants to be able to restore any file in the aforementioned directory if necessary. Really what is wanted is the ability to restore to any of the previous 10 days and any of the last day of the the month for the previous year, and any of the last day of the year for the last 7 years, I know how to set up a management class and the associated copy groups and also the schedules, but I'm not really sure how to tie these together. Can you use several management classes for the same directory? How do you implement that.? Also to keep the amount of data in ADSM as low as possible I suppose you would likely want some sort of incremental backup but related to the schedule, e.g., an incremental "series" for the daily backups, another incremental series for the monthly etc. Could be that I'm on the wrong track here but I don't really know how to get off. Any help would be appreciated! -- thanks, Peter Koblauch, [EMAIL PROTECTED] BTW: I'm running ADSM 3.1 on an RS/6000.

Re: How to archive daily/monthly/weekly
Hello, The two solutions suggested so far will both work, but I wanted to point out some issues with each. First - with Backup Sets, the obvious problem is that they are not supported at your ADSM Level of 3.1. 3.1 isn't supported at all anymore, so I would imagine you will be upgrading soon. The other problem with using Backup Sets is that there is no easy volume management and (unless you create two) you loose the advantage of having a "copy pool" version of the data. Most people who ask for a 1 year backup expect the data to actually be there one year later, so a redundant copy is a good idea. Second - the multiple Management Classes with different archive retention periods has always worked, and will always work. This is my prefered solution, although it is not without its challenges too. The tricky thing here is to figure out how you are going to schedule your "backup" operations. On a given day, you might be running an incremental, or a "monthly" archive, or a "yearly" archive. What are the requirements? Do they want the monthly archive to be done on the first day of each month or the last day? It makes a BIG difference as to how hard it is to do with the TSM scheduler. It is best to try and use a 3rd party scheduler in that case. I wanted to make these comments because this is one area of functionality that TSM's Incremental Always approach doesn't handle well at all, and it is often a valid business requirement. The Backup Sets idea was a good first kick-at-the-can, but I think they focused much more on the Rapid Restore concept and not on the "Long Term Instant Archive". Hopefully there are some developpers or powerful customers listening... ;-). Hope that helps. Scott. Re: TSM ACSLS Support vs GRESHAM EDT
I recently worked with a customer in a similar environment: STK Powderhorn, ACSLS on Solaris, TSM on Windows 2000, 9840 fiber attached drives. This is a killer system. The disk pool is 500 GB of SAN attached RAID5 disk. We're able to move over 100 GB/hour to 10 drives. We're hammering the same storage pretty hard: both migration and backup stg occurring simultaneously. If we could run one or the other to all 10 drives we could probably see even higher throughput. The ACSLS portion of this works very well. We've had to "learn" how it wants to work with checkin and checkout of volumes but that didn't take long. TSM shares the library with STK CAM. Except for one fumble fingered incident, no problem sharing the library. Kelly J. Lipp Storage Solutions Specialists, Inc. Is anybody out there using: - TSM ACSLS support (Advanced Device Support) - with STK 9840 drives - on STK Wolfcrek robot, residing on a mainframe (OS/390) - through STK Library Station on the same mainframe - single TSM/AIX server (small installation) -- no drives sharing, no SAN... Any problems with ACSLS support (or EDT for that matter...)? Or is it running fine? I have tested Gresham EDT and it worked well, but I am now testing TSM ACSLS support and it also seems to be working fine... My solution was (and I tested it) to put this statement in the dsm.opt file inclexcl FILENAME And then put the INCLUDE/EXCLUDE Statements in that separate file. In this case, the dsm.opt and the inclexcl-file was unchanged. But I think this is a bug and should be solved by an apar. SINGLE DRIVE relaim 'problem'
Hi all, I have a problem with my tapes (i think). I'm using 3.7.3.8 on a AIX 4.3.3. I have a single drive 3570. I'm trying to do a single drive reclaimation. My setup on the stgpool concerns are: stg namedevclassnext stgpool backuppool disk tapepool1 reclpool recl_class tapepool1 tapeppool1 bkdev_class a reclaimstg has been set for tapepool1 to point to reclpool. A reclaimation treshold was set for tapeppol at 80% since 1 only manage to get 6.5G for reclpool area. recl_class type is file. A reclaimation process started yesterday evening with one of the tapes. It moved the valid files (not expired) to the reclpool but did not manage to complete it. There were some read errors on the files and about 6-7 files were still left in the reclaimable tape. The tape vol was change status to 'unavailable'. Does this meanthe tape vol won't be reclaim or can the tape content be deleted and send to scratch area again? Need info on this. Thanks fo all your help in advance. regards Ameerul _ Get more from the Web. FREE MSN Explorer download : http://explorer.msn.com
TDP for Oracle Question

Re: How to archive daily/monthly/weekly
Yes, I am designing a solution for a customer who wishes to do weekly fulls and monthlies - I will be using archivesets. -- Joshua S. But then I started thinking of using backupsets. Our users wanted to go a little further and have a daily copy, a weekly copy, a monthly copy and the possibilitie to archive some files freeing space on the server. I think I will choose to solve this problem like that but we still have to discuss some points. So my proposition would be for you: a daily incremental backup scheduled via the known way. Monthly create a backupset witj a retention period long enough to cover the retention period your customer asks and a yearly archive with a retention of 7 years. I do not think you can combine management classes in the include/exclude options. Hope to have helped you, M.Engels
Re: How to archive daily/monthly/weekly
3.1 isn't supported at all anymore, Actually support ends January 31st, 2001 -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Scott McCambly Sent: Tuesday, November 28, 2000 2:22 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: How to archive daily/monthly/weekly Hello, The two solutions suggested so far will both work, but I wanted to point out some issues with each. NT Backup/recovery
Hi All, For NT 4.0, I have tested the Bare Metal Restore on a testing PC and the procedures is fine. However, it seems unrealistic to have a NT repair partition in particular for a NT with only one harddisk. Just wan to know how you cater for NT system recovery in a TSM environment. Do you run additional backup utilities? If so, what is your procedures. Thanks in advance. Regards, Eric Tang
