Re: Linking RMAN to ADSM

2001-02-09 Thread James Thompson

Donald,

With Oracle 8.1.x all you need to do to use a third party media management
library
is to set that link. You have the link set correctly, so Oracle should be
using
the TDP for Oracle library file. You didn't by chance run the make command?
You might want to give Oracle support a call and ask why it is using the
test disk
library file, when the link has been changed.

James,

On our system the library is libobk.so

Here is the output from the find / -name libobk.a -exec ls -l {} \; command

lrwxrwxrwx   1 root other 43 Feb  1 09:28 /usr/lib/libobk.so ->

cannot open /proc/4552/fd/6: No such file or directory
cannot open /proc/4552/fd: No such file or directory

The links correct. What are the last two lines though?

There was nothing returned from the find / -name libobk.a -exec what {} \;
command

Thanks Again
Don Bricker

>>> James Thompson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 02/08/01 09:49PM >>>
I always like the command

find / -name libobk.a -exec ls -l {} \;
and
find / -name libobk.a -exec what {} \;

The first searches for all occurences of libobk.a and lists them in long
format so
that you can see if your links are correct. You should rename Oracle's
libobk.a disk
library file.

The second makes sure that the libobk.a is the right version.

All you need is a soft link in the Oracle directory to /usr/lib/libobk.a
which should in
turn point to the tsm directory where the TDP for Oracle library file
resides.

I am trying to set up RMAN 8.1.6 to communicate with ADSM/TDP. At one point
I was able to do an RMAN tablespace backup to tape and then was also able to
do a restore. Now when I try to get a tape backup it goes to disk. In the
RMAN output it tells me it is using the Oracle Test Disk API. There are
other errors, but I suspect that this is the problem. I have tried shutting
down the databases and removing the soft link and relinking (soft).
One thing I noticed when I do :
ldd oracle|grep libobk.so
I get nothing back. Shouldn't I be seeing something here?
Also can anyone explain what the BACKUP_DIR environment variable?

I always just use the entire range. It's only asking for tapes with the

Hi Bill

Thanks for the response it is very helpful, my next question is that when I
use the VOLRANGE parameter must it always be the entire range of tapes. And
when this is done does this completely discount the other tapes from being
included in the others checkin procedure.

In response to the other e-mail. Both Sun Servers can see all the drives
and they are attached through dual brocade switches.

You need to make sure that your CHECKIN commands on each server use the
VOLRANGE parameter. When you put tapes in the 3494, they are placed in the
insertion catagory and the first 'host' to grab them get them. So you could
possibly checkin serverA's tapes in for serverB and write over good data.

For my AIX TSM Server, I create a server script that has the CHECKIN
command
with all my parameters. I then schedule this in an admin schedule to run
daily after I know the operators have done tape rotation. TSM won't let you
actually schedule a checkin command, but you can imbed it in a script and
schedule the script. Also, this is the only command I run to manually check
tapes in...RUN CHECKIN (CHECKIN is my script name). This way I make sure
that I'm not going to checkin some other servers' tapes.

We use a naming convention for out tape volsers. R0-R9 is for the
AIX server, and M0-M9 is for our OS/390 systems.

I don't believe there is any way to control where in the library the

I'd like some info on your configuration if you wouldn't mind. How are
the tape drives connected: do both servers connect to all drives

Re: DB2/2 Backup and Policy

2001-02-09 Thread James Thompson

You haven't said if you are running the db2adutl commmand to
expire old backup versions. Db2 backups are saved with a timestamp
so each db2 backup is an 'active version' The only way they become
inactive and eligible for expiration is if you run the db2adutl command
that deletes the backups.

I am getting the following errors in the /dsmerror.log file constantly. If
any one has an idea why this seems to be happening, I am all ears.

ANS1102E Excessive number of command line arguments passed t

ANS1133W An expression might contain a wildcard not enclosed

They seemed to start up all of a sudden. My UNIX adminer removed some of
the data so it is relatively impossible to state with 100% accuracy what
changed on the systems that could have caused this.

Does any one have any idea what is causing this? Here is some more details
if you need them. We have no dsmc client listener processes running on the
client box for either nodes. We have two node names defined on the TSM
server for the client host. One node name is defined for the normal client
and the other node name is defined for the TDP API client. I believe the
TSM adminer has tried to expire or disable the node from the policy domains
so as to render them inactive.

Any help would be appreciated.

>dsmc: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2:

Michael - Two final things I would check:

1. That the library which the rpm listing says is installed, is actually
   in the usual place:
/usr/lib/libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2

2. That the invoker shell does not have a LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment
variable which specifies places where the library is not.

Beyond that I would try installing the client on another Linux box and
see if any different behavior. As Joerg Nouvertne suggested, this
could be a library content issue, rather than existence issue.
You might also be able to inspect the contents of the TSM 4.1 client
binary to see if it has a wacky LD_LIBRARY_PATH compiled into it.
If the client you downloaded is older than one available on the Tivoli
FTP site, the newer one on the site may have received corrections.
If all else fails, if you have a Tivoli support contract, give them
a call.

Since it's all AIX, you will be able to restore the old TSM database on the
new TSM server and voila. Note that your drive and library definitions in
the restored server will definitely be wrong. Fix those up either with an
update drive, update library, or delete and start over with the
defininitions. You can then check in the tapes and you should be all set.

I currently have 1 IBM 3466 B03, 1 IBM 3466 C30, and TSM on 390.
The B03 is being replaced by a C01. B03 is a microchannel RS/6000 running
ADSM
3.1.2.50
The C01 will be a PCI H70 RS/6000 running TSM 3.7.2.0. I will be
responsible
for migrating all the
data from the B03 to the C01. Both Servers/3494's are at the same location
so I
think import/export
may not be the fastest approach. Basically the swing over will take place
over
one weekend.
Does anyone have any guidance as to what my approach should be to make the
swing
and migrate
all the data over to the new machine? Transporting the old tapes to the new
machine would not be
a problem. The only difference between the new and old 3494 ATL will be the
drives. The B03 has
3590 B1A's (4 of them) and the C01 will have 6 3590 E1A's.
Please bare with me.. I'm new (TSM admin for 1 month).
Thanks in advance... Denis

Yeah, don't run awk, but rather nawk. I think the syntax for running that

We recently had a disaster recovery drill for our Unix Sun Box E10K, We had
a problem executing the DRM plan file created on the SUN box using the
Unix AWK command when trying to build the DRM scripts, we received SYNTAX
errors, we executed the same AWK command against the E10K DRM file on the
RS6000 and It ran OK.

My question is there anything that has to be done prior to running the AWK
command on a SUN box .,

tsm client acceptor

Re: Server to Server

2001-02-09 Thread Walter Ridderhof

The things to watch for in a server-2-server configuration involving diskpools
is too make sure the receiving diskpool can buffer the archive (!
server-2-server data uses a defined archive copy group !) sent over by the
source server, the parameter to watch is the 'max cap' for the device class
defined for server-2-server. Also make sure the sources node name defined in the
server definition (as in q server f=d) has a maxnummp setting of at least 2,
this is crucial if archiving direct to tape. As a closer don't forget to set max
scratch on the receiving sequential storage pool, and for the WAN(ners) if
possible set client compression on, this helps reducing the amount of client
data pushed thru the WAN.

TSM hangs

2001-02-09 Thread Wu, Jie

Hi,
I issued "checkin libv 8mm-library search=yes checkl=barcode
status=scratch" to checkin a scratch tape for database backup. Right after
that, I remembered that I should check the volhist. So I issued "q volh
t=dbb" and find out that the volume I was trying to check in dad been used
for database backup. So I did "delete volh t=dbb todate=-14" to try to turn
that volume into a scratch tape. But after this command, TSM server hung. I
waited a while and then issued "cancel proc ***" to cancel the checkin
process. I guess the command sequence created a database deadlock or
something and "q proc" told me the cancelling is in process. I waited about
an hour, hoping the TSM sever can figure out a way itself. But finally I
decide to stop TSM server. When I tried to restart the server, I had a error
of "Can not open adsmserv.lock". So I mv it to "adsmserv.lock.old" and
restart was succesful. To my surprise, TSM 4.1, unlike ADSM3.1, remembers
what it was doing last time it was running. When I did "q proc", the
cancelling proc was still in process.

Does anybody know what I should do? Thanks.

Required by tivoli:
Linux kernel 2.2.x
glibc 2.1.x
libstdc++ 2.9.x

Thats on the server installed:
kernel-2.2.16-22
kernel-utils-2.2.16-22
glibc-2.2-9
libstdc++-2.96-69

I didn't install the required libs for the x-window because I don't want to use the

You're starting ONE process and FOUR CPUs go busy?? Are you sure?
Have your AIX people run monitoring as the incremental backup
starts and runs, to gather information. You can also turn on
client tracing to see where time is going.
Remember that during a basic Incremental the amount of work to
be done is proportional to the number of files in the file system
and in the filespace as stored on the server. It sounds like a
huge file system is involved in this backup.
You might want to try a -incrbydate flavor of Incremental to
get contrasting numbers, which elminates having the server filespace
complement sent to the client, massaged by the client, and then
compared as it steps through the file system.

Re: LTO versus 3590

2001-02-09 Thread Loon, E.J. van - SPLXM

Hi Paul!
I don't know anything about AIT. We are currently using 3570 because of it's
fast data access times, but we need a larger library. Since we are already
using the largest one (3575-L32) our only option was to use more libraries.
Not something you would like to do in a TSM configuration.
We narrowed the choices down to two, 3590 and LTO. 3590 because it's
compatible with our OS/390 environment, should we want to integrate in the
future, and LTO because it's an open architecture. We choose for 3590
because little was known about LTO about a year ago.

Broken mirror or FS snapshot for Linux

2001-02-09 Thread Thomas Denier

We have been using ADSM and TSM to back up a number of OpenMail servers
running under HP-UX. OpenMail stores messages in a database implemented as a
large collection of small Unix files. A sound backup requires a
self-consistent snapshot of the entire collection of files. We have been able
to stop OpenMail briefly, obtain snapshots of the file systems containing the
message store, and start OpenMail again. OpenMail could then run while *SM was
backing up the snapshots.

We have used two methods of obtaining the file system snapshots. Some of the
file systems are on mirrored disks, with the mirroring implemented by the
Logical Volume Manager. In these cases we use the lvsplit command to sever the
connection between the two disks, mount the former mirror, and have *SM back
it up. When the backup was done, we unmounted the former mirror and used the
lvmerge command to return it to its normal role as a mirror. More recently
some of the message store file systems have used RAID-5 implemented within the
disk subsystem controller. In these cases we mount a relatively small logical
volume using the snapof option to make it a read-only snapshot of the message
store file system. The space in the snapshot logical volume is used to record
the old versions of blocks changed by writes to the message store. A read from
the snapshot will obtain data from the message store logical volume if the
disk block involved has not changed since the snapshot was created. Otherwise
the read will obtain the saved version of the block from the snapshot logical
volume.

We are now considering running an OpenMail server under Linux. Does Linux have
anything analogous to either of the mechanisms described in the previous
paragraph?

The LTO roadmap includes two paths

Ultrium, which is the "LTO" that everyone here is talking about
and Accelis, which is the next generation 3570 tape, with the same shape and
size, emphasis on fast access to data and considerably higher capacity

I assume that when the accelis drives become available you'll be able to
field-upgrade your 3575 to them.

*BUT*

This is all marketing hype and there have been no announcements since the
original roadmap.

If you want to drool a bit, do a search on Accelis at www.ibm.com and there
are specs at www.lto.org
In the meantime you could set up a three level hierarchy

keep the magstar _and_ buy LTO. I plan to use LTO for the database backups

Thanks

I assumed that the domain= on import referred to domains on the export

Re: import node into a different domain

2001-02-09 Thread s frederic johanson

The only way I find around this was to recreate the old Domain on the new
server, with a stgpool if necessary, and then update the node to the new
domain after the import. If a stgpool is necessary, I make it so small
that it migrates to the desired stgpool immediately.

Errors in the DSMerror.log file.... Help

2001-02-09 Thread Sulzer, Alan

I am getting the following errors in the /dsmerror.log file constantly. If
any one has an idea why this seems to be happening, I am all ears.

ANS1102E Excessive number of command line arguments passed t
o the program!
ANS1133W An expression might contain a wildcard not enclosed
 in quotes

Server Migration

2001-02-09 Thread Denis L'Huillier

Hello..
I currently have 1 IBM 3466 B03, 1 IBM 3466 C30, and TSM on 390.
The B03 is being replaced by a C01. B03 is a microchannel RS/6000 running ADSM
3.1.2.50
The C01 will be a PCI H70 RS/6000 running TSM 3.7.2.0. I will be responsible
for migrating all the
data from the B03 to the C01. Both Servers/3494's are at the same location so I
think import/export
may not be the fastest approach. Basically the swing over will take place over
one weekend.
Does anyone have any guidance as to what my approach should be to make the swing
and migrate
all the data over to the new machine? Transporting the old tapes to the new
machine would not be
a problem. The only difference between the new and old 3494 ATL will be the
drives. The B03 has
3590 B1A's (4 of them) and the C01 will have 6 3590 E1A's.
Please bare with me.. I'm new (TSM admin for 1 month).
Thanks in advance... Denis

Re: MagStar Tape Library #3575 vs. LTO

2001-02-09 Thread Joerg Pohlmann/CanWest/IBM

Great idea, Miles. Some of my installations use older technology, e.g DLT
or 8mm Mammoth for offsite DR and use LTO for on-site normal backup. This
way the investment in old technology is redeployed. With DLT and 8mm you
don't have the slow-as-molasses reclamation processing if these
technologies are used for DR. Offsite reclamation only produces output
tapes and hence can even be used with small single-drive DLT libraries
since the input for offsite reclamation comes from the LTO library.

Hi LuAnn,
we are also in the exact same situation. We backup a large database and
many smaller filesystems. We also have and SP and L32 3575. My thoughts are
this: keep the magstar _and_ buy LTO. I plan to use LTO for the database
backups (few but large files) and my offsite storage pool. Then keep using
the magstar for the many, but smaller filesystem files.

We are reaching storage capacity limit in our current MagStar Tape Library.
We have TSM 3.7 (will upgrade to 4.1 later in the summer). Our TSM
environment is in an AIX environment. We have 6 RS/6000 AIX nodes on an SP
switch and about 30 NT servers that we back up nightly.

We are looking at upgrading or adding on to our existing library. One
option our vendor would like us to consider is the use of a LTO system. He
said that although it is not quite as fast our as MagStar the storage
capacity on the tapes are 100 gig native and 200 gig compressed. Does
anyone have any opinions on that?

Thanks.

ReadPswdFromRegistry(): RegOpenPathEx(): Win32 RC=2-- does this mean that it is
looking for the password, going to the path and then giving the return code of
2-- the system cannot find the file specified, i.e., the encrypted password
isn't in the registry?

(Passwordaccess is generate in the dsm.opt files, and the password at the server
has not been manually changed prior to the client accessing the server).

Since it is showing that after accessing the server, it is asking for the userid
and password, is this the action that will "seed" the password?

Why doesn't dsmcutil updatepw work anymore? It used to be that if you resync'd
the password with the dsmcutil, it worked. Now it seems that it may or may not
work, for a few days or not.

Has anyone else experienced this, and how did you make it go away??

thanks!!

I always like the command

find / -name libobk.a -exec ls -l {} \;
and
find / -name libobk.a -exec what {} \;

The first searches for all occurences of libobk.a and lists them in long
format so
that you can see if your links are correct. You should rename Oracle's
libobk.a disk
library file.

The second makes sure that the libobk.a is the right version.

All you need is a soft link in the Oracle directory to /usr/lib/libobk.a
which should in
turn point to the tsm directory where the TDP for Oracle library file
resides.

Subject: Linking RMAN to ADSM

Thank You
