Re: Can't backup MSCS shared disk using schedule

2001-04-19 Thread France, Don G (Pace)

Actually, you should consider using the Exchange Site Services account to
run the schedule; we had the same problem, went back to the books (via IBM
friend) which reminds you to use the admin account for the db engine - as it
sometimes has special rights that either local system lacks or standard SA
lacks. Best practices, use an account that is known to and used by dba's to
support the db environment (regardless of which db you're using, they all
have this "problem" in common). Everything else you say here is great
stuff!

You also need to be using different nodenames for the local and cluster

p.s. if you are losing you password it is most likely caused by not
specifying clusternode: and clustername: in the dsmcutil command.

TDP for Domino

2001-04-19 Thread Radha Parameswaran

Is there a web client available for TDP for Domino? I have configured the
TDP Backup/Archive client on my NT servers for web access and it will be
handy if this is available for TDP for Domino.

Second question...I am in the process of setting up TDP for Domino on two
Domino servers. In a few months, these two servers will be setup with
clustering and all the databases will be replicated between the two. Will
I have to make any changes to TDP Domino configuration after the clustering
is setup?

Appreciate all the help.

Try running "dsmadmc" from server console. If that doesn't allow you to
connect to TSM, you can set communication method as SharedMem in dsmserv.opt
and dsm.sys, which doesn't use TCP/IP and run dsmserv from server itself. If

about it.

The door to my IBM 3583 LTO library was left open over the long weekend and
TSM was unable to do a DB backup. As such, the log file was never truncated
and has completely run out of space. Since this has occurred, I have been
unable to make any type of connection to TSM. Whether I try to attempt with

TDP for Domino

2001-04-19 Thread Mark Stapleton

I posted a question back in March about why a customer might not be
getting backups of all changed Lotus Domino files using TDP. I finally
got an answer from Tivoli. If this is in the TDP documentation, *I*
missed it:

When running incremental backups of Domino files, the only way that an
incremental backup will get all changed .nsf files is if logging is
completely turned off. If archival logging is on[1], TDP will only
backup .nsf files that have a database ID number that is different than
the one it had when the file was last backed up.[2] The only way to do
an complete incremental backup of .nsf files is to backup the
transaction logs.

This behavior would explain the circumstance of those who send posts to
this list complaining that Domino is only backing up a few of the many
.nsf files that should be backed up.

All of the above is not true if you're doing selective backups, BTW.

[1] Incremental backups using TDP will not work at all if circular
logging (Domino's default state, of course) is turned on.
[2] Database ID numbers are reassigned only when the database is
manipulated, such as a compaction, or when the Domino server is
rebooted. This would explain why the first incremental backup after a
reboot 'works'.

2001-04-19 Thread Caffey, Jeff L.

In regards to Neil Poland's response, I've had to do the same thing
recently. The only difference is that I did a FULL backup of the database.
Also, after I reduced the log back to it's original size, I left the new log
volume (in Neil's example - "temprec.log01") out there in case I ever needed
it again.

It's a pain in the backside, but it will work.

DSMFMT an additional recovery log volume:

Use the DSMSERV EXTEND LOG command to do a recovery log extension:

dsmserv extend log temprec.log01 100

Start the TSM server. When it comes up login and disable sessions, cancel

Once your backup is complete and the log percent utilized drops, if in

Then reduce the log size and delete the new log volume:

reduce log 100
delete logvol temprec.log01

Set logmode back to roll forward:
set logmode rollfoward

Re: Full DB log file causing TCP/IP Connection Failure

2001-04-19 Thread Michael Hull

You have to shutdown TSM, and then add additional LOG space. I
run an AIX box, so adding space may be different with Win2K. The
concept is to run the utility to format an additional LOG file, and
then add it to TSM's configuration.

Then start TSM. It will allow connections until the additional LOG
becomes full. Of course, you will be immediately connecting as an
admin client and performing a DB backup as quickly as possible.
Depending on how much LOG space you we able to add, you may
want to disable sessions as soon as you connect to prevent the
LOG becoming full before the DB backup can complete.

Unable to delete Disk Stgpool

2001-04-19 Thread Dean Winger

Please Help

I have a Disk Storage Pool Volume that is marked Destroyed. It is
destroyed because it no longer exists. The drive that the volume was
on was removed from the server. Because the server can't see the
volume I was unable to delete it so I just marked it as destroyed. I
now however would like to remove the Disk Storage Pool from this
server but I can't because it stills has a reference to the destroyed
volume. My question is, is there any way I can clean up this mess.

Storage Pool Name: ArchivePool
Volumes: E:\archive.dsm

The volume E:\archive.dsm is destroyed. There is no E: drive
available to this server
Unable to delete ArchivePool because of the reference to
E:\Archive.dsm.

Any suggestions?

Re: TDP for SQL Server Setup

2001-04-19 Thread Neil Schofield

Michel

Your right - in most cases only one scheduler would be sufficient.

One reason for having two schedulers is so that one can be performing a TDP
client for SQL backup at the same time as the other is performing a filesystem
backup. We use the TDP for SQL client to perform hourly transaction log backups
of important databases. Both the nightly filesystem schedule and the TDP backup
schedules have a 5 minute startup window.

Since each scheduler can only handle one schedule at once, a long running
incremental backup ( > 1 hour) would cause the transaction log backup to be
missed.

Another advantage of two schedulers is the ability to have separate scheduler
log files for the two sorts of activity. We use verbose logging of the
incremental backups which means other activity can become lost in the log.

This would be extremely useful, especially since Linux is now a

Can't backup MSCS shared disk using schedule

2001-04-19 Thread Shawn Pritchard

Server: AIX v3.7.3.8  Client: v4.1.2.12

The MSCS client is unable to backup his shared disks using the schedule
(he can back them up manually).
It seems that when he starts up the schedule service the nodename and
password are being deleted from the registry. On the NT event log the
error message says to use the dsmcutil utility to update the node as
there's no password. When you check the registry the node and password
are deleted although they were there before attempting to start the
service.
It shows up on the client as both an authorization and a TCPIP problem.
When he first installed the client and the schedule services his client
was experiencing connectivity problems due to a new routing
configuration. As he couldn't install the clients without connectivity
to the server, he decided to use the dsmcutil to create the schedules
and the services. When he experienced the problems that I mentioned, he
did a complete unistall of the schedule, the services, and the client.
He then re-booted and re-installed everything, but the results were the
same.

Re: AIX TSM DB ON NT?

2001-04-19 Thread Kelly J. Lipp

Nope, this is not possible. You cannot move a db from one platform type to
another. You can export all of the information within the database and
import into another on a different platform type, but that can be a lengthy
process.

You might peruse www.adsm.org for topics of this nature. We've hashed
numerous ways of moving from one platform to another in some detail.

OK, I'm curious.
How do you define 'old' ?
How often do you need to defrag the ADSM database (or is this like 'how
long is a piece of string'). How can you tell it needs defragging ? I
know where to get this information from ADABAS but not ADSM

Bob King's previous reply explains the difference between meta objects and data
objects more eloquently than I could.

While I understand the reasons for separating meta objects and data objects, and
storing the meta data on disk-only storage pools, we chose not to. In doing this
we accepted that if we needed to perform a query about a SQL database backup
object to find out information such as the data-file locations, a tape would
need to be mounted. This is slow (especially on our DLT7000s) but is something
that we do infrequently, and usually only as the precursor to a restore from
tape anyway.

We too use both the Windows 4.1.2.12 backup/archive client and the TDP for SQL
client to protect the servers. Although not strictly necessary, we use two
different node registrations on the TSM server for each system. The only
interaction between the two software components is the use of the scheduler from
the backup/archive client to schedule TDP backups.

We have two TSM scheduler services installed per system - one for the TDP for
SQL client performing SQL Server backups and one for the Windows backup/archive
client node performing file system backups. The SQL Server backups are performed
by TSM schedules where ACTION=COMMAND and the filesystem backups are performed
by TSM schedules where ACTION=INCREMENTAL. These schedules are handled by the
two different services and allows the different schedules to be actioned
concurrently.

There are a number of other ways we could have set things up, but this seems to
work very well for us.

Re: Database defragmentation (was Expiration)

2001-04-19 Thread Chibois, Herve

Hi Mavis,

defining "old" is not so simple. Let me give you some example where you DB
can be considered as "old" or "fragmented"

- you server was born in ADSM 3.1 and you upgraded to 4.1.3 after following
all the latest patches / ptf 3.1.2.90... 3.7.2 3.7.4 ...  ==> then you need
to unload/load you DB

- some years ago you defined an archiving policy and start storing archive
files in you TSM box (or ADSM box). One day, your boss told you to separate
your backup and archive into 2 tsm servers. So you did and moves all your
archives files onto your second server. ==> here again you need to
unload/load
your DB

- at the begginig, ADSM was running on a nice E20 with fast 4.5 GB hdd. By
the
years, you added disk for DB / STG and your system has plenty of different
disks,
small, huge, slow, fast... You decided to move onto a new H80 or pSeries
server
with a SAN storage or SSA disk unit. ==> One again, you will have better
perf if
you unload/load you DB.

Generally speaking, on my customers' "big" tsm sites, I do this once a year
if the production can be stopped. It *really* depends on how long you can
stop
your backup services and how much resources (CPU, disks, tapes) you have.

Last point, says your DB is accros 2 big 9 Gig volumes, but only 51% filled.
You want to change 2*9 gig by 4*4.5 gig for better perf. if tsm can not move
you data (or remove a 9 gig vol), you can try to unload/load the db and it
will be much easier for tsm to remove the big vols after the unload/load
operations.

Very last point. Daily, I log to an external DB (mysql), some stats about
DB/LOG
comsuption, node occupancy and schedule stats. It allows me to have an
historic
graph of some KEY values in tsm such as DB/LOG % and node occupancy. several
months after the Y2K big jump, my DB lost 20 % (9 gig). This was a good
occasion
to degrad it.

Hope this "best practises" will help you

Re: TSM cold backups

2001-04-19 Thread Cook, Dwight E

Recently we had to move an environment from Chicago to Naperville.
The move was also an equipment upgrade so all that would be moved was the
tsm image (and then later the tapes & atl)
Anyway we toyed with shutting down tsm and then ftp'ing the db & log files
over to the new box but that wasn't an option due to time... what we ended
up doing was using TSM's "backup db" to a disk file, we then ftp'ed that
file to the other server, did a "restore db commit=no" (we had tested
and adjusted our time schedule where the 1'st restore completed just before
when we wanted to take down the prod environment to move) So then we
disabled client sessions and a little bit of other misc activity, took an
incremental tsm db backup, ftp'ed that over, and performed a "reatore db
 commit=yes".

>From actual outage on the box in Chicago until we were up and running in
Naperville was less time than it took DSN services to update the node's
entry with its new IP address.

So here, any sort of voodoo remote copy (if it would have been any faster)
would have just had us sitting with with nothing to do even longer than we
already were, waiting on everything else... (Oh, that was a 24 GB tsm DB)

AND this worked, correctly, the first time !

What did I set out to say here ? ? ? My thoughts and experiences have shown
me that the options that TSM provides for the recovery of its own
environment work well, are easy to use, flexible, and simple/straight
forward.

just thinking out loud too !

live? SOmething like Oracle's Hot backup?

Just thinking out loud . . . .

Restoring DB without LOGs

2001-04-19 Thread Andreas Walter

Hi,

we've got a serious problem. We are doing online backups with our DB2
Databases. The LOGs should have been backed also (seperate mechanism).
However they haven't and the machine has got a serious hdd failure.
We have only the online Backup and - of course - DB2 refuses to use the
backup without the LOGs. Actually we wouldn't have a problem with
loosing the last transactions (we can retransmit them even for days,
weeks or month) That boils it down to the question if it is possible to
"force" DB2 to "don't worry about the problems, which might occur". Any
chances? We use UDB V6.

Thanks and regards,

Re: SQL for Amount Backed up Daily:

2001-04-19 Thread MC Matt Cooper (2838)

Bill,
I also run 4.1 on OS390. I have found that activating the
ACCOUNTing records to work the best. I take the SMF records and go through
them with a SAS program. It was pretty quick to write. I run it everyday
and put the summarized records in a SAS DB so I can put together some
history programs sometime in the future. You can have it if you want it.

Folks...

I'm running TSM 4.1 on an S390 server, and have 85 clients divided into two
domains - Novell and AIX. Many of the clients run multiple backup sessions
per day.

I'm new to SQL, and have been trying to write the command that will show me
the amount backed up, in MB per day, per client. My problem is that my
command only shows me the amount from the last session, not the last 24
hours.

Has anyone ever succeeded at writing such a command?

Thanks.

Re: TDP for SQL Server Setup

2001-04-19 Thread Neil Schofield

Jack

Re: Problem configuring a Library

2001-04-19 Thread Geoff Pusey

George,

Thank you for this information, it will be of great use in the future, but
unfortunately we are using a FCAW card, and the card driver is installed.

We do have Storage Tec coming back in today to check out the hardware,
hopefully they will find some thing wrong.

Since I have no way of knowing what you have done... here is a step by step
from
the beginning. I don't know why you are using a FC switch either...

* Copy driver file to a temp dir and uncompress...
* pkgadd -d
   follow prompts to install
* READ the driver README file!
* go back and READ it again
* remove the Sun IFP driver and you may need to remove/reinstall your HBA's
device driver with the vendor & device ID #s
   rem_drv ifp
   (((follow README instructions for removing/reinstalling your HBA driver
- it
may not be necessary)))
* You need to select a Hard AL_PA on your bridge. Since I don't know what
type
bridge or HBA is being used, the HBA will
   read top to bottom or bottom to top but they usually read top down so
choose
E8 initially
* since your drives are type=scsi is to edit your /kernel/drv/st.conf file
to
ensure that you have support for all the tape
  devices. It should look like:

tape-config-list=
 "QUANTUM DLT7000",  "QUANTUM DLT7000", "DLT7k-data";
 DLT7k=data = 1,0x38,0,0x3D639,4,0x82,0x83,0x84,0x85,3;
name="st" class="scsi"###this lun will provide support for your robot,
if
any
 target=0 lun=0;
name="st" class="scsi"
 target=1 lun=0;
name="st" class="scsi"
 target=1 lun=1;
name="st" class="scsi"
 target=1 lun=2;
(this will give you device support for 3 drives

* By selecting AL_PA E8, this will put your on bus1 and your robot will be
target 1 lun 0 on your bridge and your drives will
   be target 1 luns 1-3 respectively. You have the ability to change the
target/lun setting for the robot (if you have one) and
   for your DLT drives. Change them to the previously mentioned SCSI
addresses:
   Robot Target 1 lun 0
   drive 1  11
  2  12
  3  13
* You can delete the entries in /dev/rmt if you wish.
*  type touch /reconfigure
* reboot -- -r (((the reboot will rebuild your devices in /dev/rmt based
on
the support you built into the tape-config-list.
* you will see the HBA show up in the banner and in /var/adm/messages. If
you
have a syntax error in st.conf, it will be
   reflected there as well

Another way to this is to remove the special character files in /drv/rmt
and:
drvconfig -i
devlinks
tapes
(((then look into /dev/rmt to ensure that the special character files were
created.

Subject:  Problem configuring a Library

Hi all,

I hope there is some one out there which can shed some light on this
problem. I have a SUN server where the TSM code is loaded (Version 3.7.4)
which has a fiber channel card which is in turn attached to a Fiber switch
(StorageTec 4116), of which a fiber to SCSI bridge is connected and then
the STKL700 library is connected to the Bridge.
  _
__  __
| Sun system  |___|Fiber Switch||
Bridge||Library|  3 X DLT7000
Drives 1 X autochanger
|___|  ||
|_|  |_|

These are the entries I have put in the /usr/kernel/drv/mt.conf file

name="mt" class="scsi" class_prop="fcaw"
target=0 lun=0;
name="mt" class="scsi" class_prop="fcaw"
target=0 lun=1;
name="mt" class="scsi" class_prop="fcaw"
target=0 lun=2;

When I do the /usr/sbin/add_drv -m '* 0666 bin bin' /usr/kernel/drv/mt  I
get an error unable to attach to drive and there are no *mt rmt devises
created, and in the case of the lb driver it finds a CD rom drive which is
on the first SCSI inside the SUN system and not the SCSI card which is on
the other side of the Fiber.

How do I get it to look on the other side of the Fiber?

? BUFPOOLSIZE limit under TSM4.1 / NT

2001-04-19 Thread sal Salak Juraj

hallo,

I have purchased upgrade from TSM Server 3.1.7 under NT 4
to newest TSM server version.

There is limitation of BufPoolSize to max. 65536 in my current system.

I hope this limit is much larger with TSM 4.x - I would like
to purchase some RAM an speed up my system.
Can anyone tell me how large the limit is, if any?

Another question:
are there any late server versions I should avoid because of known
problems?
(NT4, DLT4, LTO)

Database defragmentation (was Expiration)

2001-04-19 Thread M Jenkins

OK, I'm curious.
How do you define 'old' ?
How often do you need to defrag the ADSM database (or is this like 'how
long is a piece of string'). How can you tell it needs defragging ? I
know where to get this information from ADABAS but not ADSM

Re: SQL for Amount Backed up Daily:

2001-04-19 Thread Walter Ridderhof

Bill,

I use the following SQL commando to display a nodes backup amount for the last
(and in our case longest possible) backup window.

select substr(entity, 1, 16) as "Node", sum(bytes) #Bytes, sum(examined) -
#Examined from adsm.summary -
where (upper(activity)='BACKUP' and upper(substr(entity,1,12)) like upper('$1'))
and -
(date(end_time) = current_date - 1 days and time(end_time) >='19.00.00' -
or (date(end_time)=current_date and time(end_time)<='18.00.00')) group by entity

I run this as a TSM macro, the $1 is the node you want to query, if you want to
query all nodes replace the $1 with a % (procent sign).

regards Walter Ridderhof.
