Re: Global Exclude

2001-05-21 Thread Chibois, Herve

Fred,

CLOPTSETs are SERVER SIDE filters. The guys who install TSM client
on desktop do not need to know if you have filters or not. I don't
understand your pb. I see two solutions

1) you define a huge CLOPTSET for all your platforms (NT,UNIXes, Mac)
and all your nodes are attached to this cloptset. Only mathing rules
for the concerned platform will be applied, but processing time will
be longer...

2) you define a CLOPTSET for each platform (like me). Processing time
will be short.

Moreover if you user the flag FORCE=YES, your server rules will override
those potentially defined by your install-guys / users.

Sen me offline of this list, your INCLEXCL lists ...

 Herve,

Your list is similar to the one I distribute. The
 problem is that
the people who install the clients ignore it, even when it's
 in the same
folder as the client code on our distribution machine. Over
 a thousand of
my 1500+ clients are Windows or Mac desktops, and half or more have
incomplete inclexcl lists. I can have someone write some
 code that will
build a CLOPTSET that contains my minimum list and attaches it to all
appropriate clients as well as updating all existing
 CLOPTSETs to include
my list. But if there is another way to do it, a central list that
defaults for the entire system, I'd rather go with that.

TSM SNMP Management

2001-05-21 Thread Schönacher, Uwe

Dear all,

to be able to monitor the TSM and our 3494-Library with Netview (SNMP-based)
I'm looking for MIB's of these components. We have already implemented the
adsmserv.mib but in addition to this we need a MIB called ibm2100.mib and a
MIB for the IBM 3494-Library.

Do you have information on that?

AW: Storage Pools

2001-05-21 Thread sal Salak Juraj

Hi Tom,

you leave us in darkness what your offsite pool exactly is.
If it is a backup storage pool of your onsite pool,
then yes, deleting onsite files will delete offsite files as well.

Seems like what you want to accomplish is simply effectively turn
co-location on, for new and for existing data.

There are simple ways to achieve this, like following:
- update the storage pool concerned to be co-located
- be sure you have reasonably much free tape volumes in it
- tape by tape, move data from existing volumes back either into same
storage pool,
or in the originating primary disk storage pool.
You will not loose a single file and you will end with collocated tapes.

regards

Juraj Salak

Betreff: Storage Pools

I am currently running ADSM 3.1.2.50 and will be converting to TSM 4.1.

The question I have is my boss would like to keep all of the data that is
currently on our offsite copy pool and on our onsite archive pool.
What he want is to destroy the onsite migration pool, then start new backups
of all of the systems and migrate them to the onsite migration pool using
co-location.

My question is if we delete all of the migration pool tapes and discard the
data will it also remove the data from the offsite copy pool tapes or will
they remain in tact in case
something needs to be restored from that pool?

We want to do this right after we convert from ADSM to TSM.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

Clemens - The client programmer wisely wrote the C software using the
assert macro, to detect out-of-range array references and bad
pointers. How to deal with it is the challenge. I'd first look to see if
your client is memory-constrained, as being short on memory tends to cause
many peculiar problems with software in general. Beyond that you could
contact Tivili Support to see if this is a known problem with the TSM client.
But you may be running into the 4.1-3.1 compatibility problems you fear.

So in effect, we cannot impliment BRM due to this factor.

Subject: Dr Watson while installing TSM on NT 4.0

I am installing TSM through the silent install on some NT 4.0 servers and I
keep
getting a DR. Watson on the msiexec.exefrom Microsoft. It doesn't seem
to
affect anything, if I hit OK on the alert, the install continues and there
doesn't seem to be any ill effect. Has anyone else seen this problem??
If
so, what did you do to resolve it??

Hello Gill,
you may check the values how long a second version of a file stays
in your default-backup-management class . If you count back the time
your log-file was so high and you come to the date when
'daylight-saving-time-comes' ... then the reason may be that the date
when a lot of files came out again from your server has just passed
and you may have a huge expiration process running on this day(s).

Re: Recovery Log

2001-05-21 Thread Jeff Bach

If roll forward mode is not being used, the cause is probably a long
transaction in the ADSM database.

The exact transaction can be determined with show commands, but it is not
easy at all. The easiest way is to look at the oldest running sessions and
see which one has been backing up one file or Dbspace for the longest time.
3.2.41 and over Server levels also have an issue when nothing is running the
log sometimes will not clear.

SAN Data Gateway

2001-05-21 Thread Van Ruler, Ruud R SSI-ISES-31

Hi

We have a SAN Data Gateway 2108-G07 installed.
An AIX server is connected through a brocade SAN switch to the SAN Data
Gateway. Connected to this Gateway are 4 LTO devices.
We seem to have installed the 2108-G07 ok , but nevertheless the LTO drives
can not be seen from the AIX server !!?
any ideas ??

Does this brocade switch needs to be identified on the SAN Data Gateway (via
StorWatch - SAN Data Gateway Specialist software) and the AIX server as
well ???
any additional comments ??

thanks in advance

What does it mean ?

We were just informed (and this is what I want to

(As I understand from their explanation, there is
 the TSM server side module

So in effect, we cannot impliment BRM due to this
 factor.

Does anyone know if this is true ?

Re: SAN Data Gateway

2001-05-21 Thread Caffey, Jeff L.

I have experience with McData (rather than Brocade) SAN equipment, but my
first guess would be a ZONING issue within the SAN software on the Brocade
switch. Our 2108's know nothing about what kind of equipment our SAN has.
In fact, our 2108's, our IBM Shark, and all of the individual Fibre Channel
clients are all completely unaware of the McData equipment in the middle.
All they see is the SCSI equipment at the other end (in their zone). Some
servers see disk (from the Shark), some see tape drives (from our LTO

database backup

2001-05-21 Thread Ray

Hello all,

I currently do on-disk db backups (to a file devclass) of my relatively
small (2 gb) database. Full on Saturday, incrementals Sun-Fri. I keep 2
weeks of backups on disk.

I need to start implementing an offsite stgpool. Instead of wasting a
100gb LTO tape for the db, i'm thinking about just tarring the on-disk
backup to a DDS3 drive. I'll also put vol history and devconfig on the
DDS3 tape, and send it offsite with the LTO tapes.. I think it'll be a
very long time before the db exceeds the 12gb capacity of DDS3.

Anyone see any problems/gotchas with sending the db offsite this way?

Thanks,
Ray

The SAN Data Gateway does not support the LTO. According to IBM you
need the SAN Data Router.

Re: database backup

2001-05-21 Thread Rich Taft

Why don't you just define your DDS drive as a device in TSM. That way cut
out the extra step. I currently back up the DB during the day (when TSM is
for the most part Idle) and backup my OS and config files at night to
another tape. That way in the event I lose the TSM server I can get it
back online with two tapes. Just define the DDS tape drive as a Manual
Drive and your all set. One pit fall in AIX is that you can't have the
Unix and Tivoli drivers both set as available at the same time. so I leave
the Unix driver as defined in Unix and switch it to available to do the
OS backup.

Re: SAN Data Gateway

2001-05-21 Thread Adolph Kahan

I have this configuration working with AIX and NT. They can both see the LTO
drives. In my case we have a 3584 Library.

What release of AIX are you running?

Which Fibre Channel card are you using in the RS boxes?

Re: database backup

2001-05-21 Thread Cook, Dwight E

OK, I can't say what the DDS3 drive is off the top of my head but if it is
something you would have an a potential disaster recovery TSM server, sure
it will work... ALSO based on the size of the file dumped to disk, you could
always ftp it somewhere else... AND if you have yet another tsm server
somewhere, you could back that file up over on the other tsm server.

We have moved a tsm environment by backing the db up to disk, ftp'ing the
file over to a new server and doing the restore from that ftp'ed file.

I JUST LOVE THIS PRODUCT !

Thanks,

How to restore a volume ?

2001-05-21 Thread Ghanekar, Prasanna

What is the correct procedure of Deleting a volume (such as DLT ) and
restoring it back on a new volume with same number ?
I'm running into a media fault problem on one of the DLT's while the

point it detects media fault on that DLT and task stops there and goes in
the loop. I would like to delete this volume and get the data back on a new
DLT.

Re: Keeping COPYPOOL in tact

Which are primary storage pools, which are copy (part seems obvious) which
are the next pool(s) for which pool(s) ? ? ?
I would just do a
upd stg dltpool collocate=yes
and let things work themselves out over time...
if you must you can do move data commands against tapes in dltpool to
speed the collocation process along but normal expiration/reclamation will
collocate things eventually.

I have four storage pools in my server (Diskpool, dltpool, copypool, and

I would like to destroy the dltpool and recreate it so that I can do
co-location on these tapes.

What I do not want to do is lose what is currently on the tapepool or

Is this possible?

TDP 3.1 for SAP R/3

2001-05-21 Thread Davidson, Becky

I installed TDP 3.1 for SAP R/3 and I have seemingly had an unending amount
of problems with it. When installing it the install failed with not enough
space even though when we checked everything according to the docs it would.
We had to turn off compression because a backup that used to take 3 hours is
now taking 20+. After we turned off compression the backups were 5-6 hours.
Now I am checking things out on the Administrative Assistant and the backups
all say they have failed even though every log we can find says successful.
Are we just cursed or has anyone else had these problems?

If you have a Copy Storage Pool, what you want to do is a Restore Volume.
Lacking that, do Move Data to get as much data off as can be recovered,
repeating on as many drives as you have to make a maximal recovery attempt.
Beyond that you have no in-server backups of the data and may have to
consider it lost.

You may want to consider software and/or firmware updates to deal with
the loop situation if it really is that. (It may simply be time being
taken by the drive to try to re-read the data, making its best effort to
retrieve the information.)

Re: SAN Data Gateway

2001-05-21 Thread Adolph Kahan

Both the 2108 R03 and G07 are supported. To find the supported
configurations for AIX and 3584 visit the following site:
http://www.storage.ibm.com/hardsoft/products/tape/tapesupport.htm - this
shows that they are supported with a 3584 library.

Now the confusion might lie in the fact that the 3580, 3581 and 3583 are
only supported with the 2108-R03.
This information can be found at:

The 2109-S16 is a SAN switch. You connect 2108's, devices with native fibre
support, and/or servers to the switch.

Port Number question

2001-05-21 Thread PETER GRIFFIN

Currenlty we do a dbbackup to local DLT media on week days and on the week-end it is
done to another remotely located server.

I would like to do the backup remotely everyday however bandwidth is a problem. We now
have a capability to cap the bandwidth usage to ensure that the dbbackup does not
have a negative effect on normal business traffic. However the capping is based upon
either or both the IP addresses and ports.

Does anyone know if the server to server communication uses a dedicated port (37 712)
or a range etc etc? I do not want to restrict any other TSM traffic.

I'm trying to add an NT client for the first time. I have downloaded the
 client packages and installed the
client, then changes the dsm.opt files and started the services on NT.
 The
client is working file, which means if I go to client and start backup
 from
GUI of from command line it's working OK. But the automatic schedule is
 not
working, it means I have created policy and schedule and assign it to
 that
client, the schedule stays in pending mode and it does not execute till
 it
 failes.
I'm getting this error in dsmsched.log. this might not be related to this
 problem, but anyway..
05/20/2001 14:36:11 ANS1818E Schedule function not allowed in loop mode.

Salam - Loop mode usually refers to invoking the command line client as
'dsmc LOOP', or more simply, 'dsmc', which is to say Interactive
 Mode.
Most likely, this message resulted because the client schedule was defined
in the server without operands to make it a useful schedule. Review your
client schedule definition in the server according to the action that you
really want it to perform, and use Update Schedule to adjust.
